    hey Guys.

well im heading to japan, spare of the moment trip leaving New Zealand on Xmas Eve and spending 5 nights there, got an exceptional price on some plane tickets.. But i know very little, im on a tight budget, i want to see some sights and keen to make it to kyoto. Flying into tokyo, so anyone have some advice on how to get around cheap ( Tricks for cheap train passes or ways to get from tokyo -> kyoto and back ).. and cheap but clean accomodation. I feel so green, excited by also a bit scared because i know so little :)

After seeing some sights id like to see some cool gaming locations, aki or somewhere else, retro stuff, Dragon Quest Stuff, PCE or even TG16..

Any advice is welcomed i'll be reading alot of the posts aswell

The rail pass isn't much more than the return ticket from Tokyo to Kyoto anyway, so if you want to do lots of travelling it's really the cheapest option (other than busking).

Well decided for all the hassle would just go with the JR Rail Pass, so thats sorted.. next accomodation, im thinking youth hostels and back packers, we are going to be in Kyoto, Tokyo, osaka, any good clean and safe places for me and my wife to stay? ive seen a few for around 6000 a night per couple.. so around that price or cheaper would be awesome..

Anyone know if the JR pass can also be used on the night trains? just wondering if one night we might do an overnight trip to save on accomodation :) ive been told hiring a karaoke booth might be the cheapest option :)

    Thanks

Nothing compared to saying you are from the US in Iran

I don't think it matters where you say you are from, most don't give a shit, hate you or ignore you anyway.
If you want genuine nice people go to Korea instead.

Lol, are you describing Japan? Because in my experience Japanese are much nicer than Koreans. And I'm gonna go out on a limp and say that Japan is known for the fact that the people are very nice.

Why is hating on Japan so popular around these boards? It's like you're not cool unless you try to prove that Japan is a shit country and talk shit about it. Not saying you should pretend it's as great as some weaboos do, but the fucking contra-movement with all the hate is getting old too imo.

Most people complaining about these things on this board actually live there and should know better then most of us that just go on a short holiday, plus it's known that Japanse are a bit racists towards outsiders.

Don't get me wrong I am not trying to say everybody is a prick, there are many really genuine nice Japanese people out there, but my experiance with Koreans is just way better and this is my personal opinion hence my comment and this is without being part of that contra movement anti japanese posse.

If you want to talk about something that is getting old in the same light, then it's the Dutch complaining about Germans

Use www.hyperdia.com to check your train schedule.

It takes under 3 hours to get from Tokyo to Kyoto by Shinkansen (less on the Nozomi but as far as I know you can't use that with the JRP). That's hardly enough for a night trip.

Also, if you have the time go and visit Miyajima island near Hiroshima. If the weather is fine it's a great daytrip from Kyoto or Osaka.

I have lived in Japan so I do feel that my input is atleast semi-validated. And I agree that those that live there can say what they want(to a certain extent), it's mostly the over-generalizing that those who haven't lived there tend to do that really annoys me. No hard feelings though, I had a good time in Korea as well :) .

And I think we complain more about Belgium people :fresh: .
