Not a problem. I buy in $10 bags (or "dimes", as they like to call them). I don't know how practical this is in NY, but if possible, try a bike. A good thirty minute bikeride will work more than you'd expect. Of course, not everyone can do this and enjoy the fast food diet I do 110, so you may want to adjust your diet accordingly, if you haven't already done so.
you'll be paying for that 'fast food' diet when you hit your mid-30s and 40s via a cardiac arrest of the severe kind, seriously.
By "fast food diet" I meant an occasional lunchtime cheeseburger. I don't wake up and snort an egg McMuffin or anything.
You have any suggestions? My mother keeps stopping by with things like ohagi (don't know if you know what that is).... Dango, ohagi, man she keeps bringing by things I am trying to avoid. I currently weight 210 pounds, Goal is 175 with a fat ratio of around 5%. Right now...you don't want to know... My problem is to get in shape without looking stupid ripped,I already look like a construction worker, I don't need to get any bigger! I used to do medicine ball, etc. But now I'm older and wiser. I prefer a toned martial artist physique if possible. Any links or info you can give me would be helpful.
First of all i'm glad of the great news! my congratulations! and about losing weight i think you should go to swimming pools. they make you fit without making you giant and chances of getting muscular problems are next to 0.
If you want a "martial arts physique", try tae-kwon-do or any of it's variations. The martial art I study doesn't place emphasis on being built like a brick shithouse to perform techniques, though that might be a bad thing somewhat as a lot of practitioners have taken that as to mean they don't have to be in at least decent physical shape and so they may have potbellies and whatnot.
How tall are you? Aren't you 5'10" or 6' 2"?? Here is a suggestion. Change your eating habits. Eat more vegetables (fresh, not canned), fish, chicken. Stay away from fried foods, try to keep that down to once a week. Cut out fast foods and any take out foods entirely. Start walking either at a park or in your neighborhood and eventually work your way up to where you can start jogging a full mile without running out of breath. Watch your calorie intake. Keep it below 2000 a day and only eat foods with good carbs (spinach, whole grain pasta, fruits for snack as well as nuts and berries) and white meat like chicken, and also fish. You can still enjoy the 'good' food but cut the consumption down severly and basically just give yourself one 'cheat' day where you can eat anything you'd like but within moderation. Also, get a good night's sleep. Stay active thru out the day, stay away from fatty foods, eat only when you're hungry and within moderation. Within a few months you'll not only have lost the weight but shrink down a few sizes, have more energy and overall feel much better. I have a few links that I have at home that might help you on exercises and proper stretching.
if you are into martial arts, then don´t take any kind of TKD , or any kind of Karate forms(except for Kenpo karate, since it is really not karate, it is a kung fu style called originally Kenpo). Take wrestling, or BJJ since when you are down on the floor with battles on the floor alot of the time. Then you will loose weight like a jackhammer on speed. And if you aren´t into "showing respect"(to me nowadays that kind is what I call buttkissing, and nothing to do with showing respect) martial arts , then try one of the JKD forms, since it has alot more to offer, than the most of the conventional arts. In that area. But here is a BIG advice, STAY away from SBG aka. Straight Blast Gym, they are arrogant , and very snobby. And when they started as a club back then when Bruce Lee was popular, then their president (Matt Thornton) was a former JKD instructor, and well I have never met him, but I seriously don´t like him, because of two things, one is his arrogance, and the other is he hired the only person who Burton Richardson (the leader of JKD unlimited) kicked out of his organisation, and that man is Rodney *Chiko* King. And well I got this word about him, from the horses mouth, RK is a mean bastard, and well I have met RK, and he gave me a concussion, by proving "trapping didn´t work". Well RK is to me a violence happy psychopath. So my point of view, if you choose a MA way of loosing weight, then don´t take any of the traditional arts. Except for wrestling, and BJJ, but maybe take one of the three JKD organisations, like PFS JKD, or Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do(run by Tim Tackett, who I personally met at a very great seminar in Denmark some years ago) , or JKD unlimited.
I'm somewhat weary with BJJ especially with some of the unchecked egos (especially in the Gracie style). They seem to boast that they're style is best in the various MMA events, but all I see is them taking forever between getting an opponent to the ground and putting on a submission. I study Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, and is a wonderful combatish school (versus TKD which is more sportish), but can be painful at times. Six jujutsu-ish schools and three ninpo schools (unfortunately, the ninpo schools aren't really taught all that much).
Don't get into martial arts yet. Start with basic exercises first and then start getting into martial arts, etc. when you are fit for those types of things. You can't teach a 2-month old baby to run immediately, right?
Best place to get an idea would be www.bodybuilding.com .Don't be scared, they have people of all shapes and sizes discussing diets there. Some want to get huge, some want to get toned, some want to lose fat. My budget/simple diet consists mainly of Oats (nothing added, just milk) and eggs (just the white bit for protein). Oats are very nice carbs because they re "slow" compared to sugar for example which is "fast" and turns into fat before u know. The general rule about carbs is this: Your body likes to burn carbs. Hell, its the easiest thing to burn. But beware, if the carbs dont burn, they get stored as FAT. So, carbs that are slowly processed are preferable, unlike sugar which needs immidiate burning. I advise low consumption of carbs, about 75 grams maximum per two hours. Remember, small meals, many meals, not big ones. No sweets, no salty, no fried. To burn FAT however, you need to run more than 20 minutes at a speed depending on your age. The trick is that your heart will stop burning glucose and start burning fat after about 20 minutes of cardio (Cardio as in the number of beats per minute your heart does, which is variable depending on age and weight, find a proper graph, for me its about 130 bpm for example). No need for cardio beyond 3-4 times a week. Not eating anything doesnt make u thin etc as you may know. Body only burns fat with cardio, and in order to do your other daily activities, eat "healthy" carbs that you will burn in the two-hour time. Don't eat energy you won't burn. Protein. Important in order to preserve or increase your muscles. Eggs>chicken>fish(not the fatty ones)>meat - milk is a mixed bag since it contains equal amounts of carbs and protein. With egg-whites you can't go wrong. Each egg white containts about 10 grams of protein, so I do about 2 eggs (raw nowadays cuz i cant be bothered boiling) every 2 hours. To sum it up, you CAN have alternative to eggs and oats, I just follow that diet cuz i m patient man, its budget, and it gets the work done. Egg whites only conatin protein, nothing else.trace of fat, trace of carbs. Pure muscle-building/preserving goodness! Nothing beats that! not even meat/fish/chicken! (although pure protein supplements, Whey protein (78% and above) are better, but they cost much more and are ideal for building big muscles where protein need is high) Always read the contents of your food btw, there's numbers for fat, protein etc. My mother cooks when i m back at home and not living alone, but as a mother she doesnt seem to understand my strict diet. I just tell her i ll make my own meals. This small/short general guidelines are for protein/carbs/fat and workout - the amount of vitamins you will get from veggies are valuable, so eat your salads, plain without mayo etc. If you can't be bothered with eating greens, go for supplement vitamins (a la centrum) , which are one a day (that's what i do). Drink alot of water. There's no magic diet to lose fat quickly. You need patience and persistance, and the ability to say "no" to things that don't fit your diet's numbers. No exceptions should be spaired, no special occasions either. Alcohol is as fattening as butter by the way, so keep clear. As you will lose fat, working out reasonably in the gym is also desirable to keep a good shape and posture (not to bulk up if u dont want to), and a healthy muscle system. All this might sound weird to alot of you, but this is routine for me nowadays, and what other people eat feels weird to me now! I could upload a pic of what my results are so far. If you feel you have a question on any specific food/category/workout program, feel free to pm me anytime or add me on msn. PS: swimming isnt bad, but it isnt ideal. Pro swimmers have a nice body because they also work out at the gym. Due to the fact that water doesnt allow as much sweating as running for example, swimming isn't ideal for losing fat.
W/o knowing your height, I'm going to have to say that cardio is going to be your friend here. Being a bit of a yoyo myself (I've been between 175 and 250, no shit) the times I put off the most fat were when I concentrated on jogging and riding the gay machine (what most people refer to as an eliptical trainer). For me, whenever I hit heavy weights, my appetite goes through the rooof. I get stronger, but I eat 'til the cows come home. I've got decent metabolism, but of course, never put off any weight in this situation. EDIT: If you can possibly stick to a Japanese-only diet (with fish as the only meat) that's a fantastic start. Most American Chiense food is too greasy. Can't comment on Korean. Of course, cooking your own food will be even better. That's out of the question for most bachelors I know though.
Its well known that men make better cooks than ladies I cook much better than many of my friends' mothers, as they say themselves
I'm 5 foot 7 inches tall. I'm like wolverinedk suggested the wrestler build. I already have excellent strength. I would prefer speed to bulk. If you want an image of my build, it's like "the rock" dwayne whatever. It might seem strange, but I don't want to look too big. Looking too big is a concern. I don't want to look like " Mr. Steroids"
A quick way to knock off pounds easy is to stop drinking soda. I've been forced to as I now have 13 cavities..I really cant afford something like that as it is but if I get any more of them Im going to go bankrupt XD. Just drink water. Really helps in the long run Good luck!
Start with cardio and low carb diet to lose the fat. Then start the body building with a high-protein diet.
Well a good advice for you is, brush your teeth. Since I have done , and still do, brush my teeth at least twice aday. So maybe you have bad enamel on your teeth, or maybe you have a worse looking mouth than mine. Or you have plain and simple forgot to brush your teeth every day. And it doesn´t mean it has to be the most popular brand you use in toothpaste. But just that, you have to brush them throughly, and do it at least twice a day, meaning morning, and before you hit the bed. And well, I don´t have any cavities, even though I have been drinking alot of sodas, both nonsugar sodas, and sugar sodas. And I am 24 years old now. And well how can it be, you have those cavities sir ? And I have never ever had yet any cavities, neither in the teeth I have now, or teeth I had when I was a child.
Yeah, this is good advice, I can vouch for it. Soda is extremely fattening, and leaving it altogether is a great help in the fight to lose weight. It also damages your esophagus little by little. (Soda, not leaving it) To lose weight, have a very defined eating schedule, and eat only at the times that you're scheduled to eat. With that, and between two litres and three litres of water every day, you'll be fine. I myself have put on some weight recently (one antidepressant, fluoxetine/prozac, made me lose it, the next one, escitalopram/lexapro made me gain it. Weird shit. The advantage ot the fattening one was I didn't kill myself, so I guess I got that going) - but when I really lost a lot of weight, it was when my doctor forbade soda and seriously limited my intake of greasy food or things like bread or tortillas, late in 1999, when I was somewhat sick.
