I recently got a bigger harddrive for my original xbox, but I can't get it to work. Everytime I try to format it and what not it freezes up but it shows up fine in Config magic.

TSOP you drop a unlocked hard disk in. That's it.
If it doesn't work, it's not compatible.

It's 500GB using a sata adapter to connect it.
It's some cheap ebay connector the only naming I can find is, "JMicron Technology JM20330 EVB-002-3".

Just going to put this straight:

Drop HDD in (or SATA HDD w/adapter),boot a disc with AID 4.53 (or HeXEn,your choice),and use XBPartitioner. As far as I know,XBPartitioner works with anything.

I did this with my Xbox I got for cheap (literally just the console and a power cord - lmao) using a 80GB Maxtor 6Y080L0 (DiamondMax Plus 9).

If it won't work, replace the SATA adapter. Oh,and NEVER LOCK THE HDD on a TSOP machine. This not only is a stupid idea, but you end up with a 500GB paperweight if the Xbox dies.

I can't open XBPartitioner, it says something about not having LBA48 compatibility.

Also a weird thing I found, every time I try to format the 500GB drive it freezes but it seemingly has no issue formatting a 2TB drive (which the xbox doesn't boot on).

You need to flash a bios with LBA48 support. Without it you can only use 137gb or so

Not every ide to sata bridge will work. I always pay extra for the star tech adapters and never have an issue with those. Other cheapo cause me too many headaches and only work some of the time.
Like bad_ad said though, make sure you chip has a bios with lba48 support. Then you can go up to 2TB.

IIRC, the jmicron chip set works pretty well and is the one in the startec adapters too.

Flashed the bios, now that should be fine. But I still have the same issues, with the exception being able to boot XBPartitioner. Which I now realize should have worked anyway considering it was the 80GB drive I tried using it on.
I tried downloading AID 4.53 but I can't seem to find a version that isn't corrupt and as for hexen, I can never let it boot from power on for some reason I always have to reinsert it on the dashboard.

Isn't there some way to make it xbox ready in a modern pc like you can with hardrives for the PS2?

Update: Even with aid it doesn't do that on boot.
On rare occasions slayer does boot I notice on the 500GB HDD but for some reason he than says that all drives haves 0 bytes...

Edit: Pardon, 0 bytes per partition.

Are you sure its not just the drive and/or combination of media/writer?

You mean the CD drive? That might be it, but it seems to work quite well on the old HDD apart from booting CD's on boot (which it does rarely). And that wouldn't explain the 0 bytes on all partitions issue.

ahh ok. Than it's still weird considering I formatted it already a few times with the Slayer disk, unless that didn't work.

What I would do is download Xboxhdm v1.9 (Xbox Hard Drive Maker) Stick your old Hard drive back in the xbox and FTP over the Retail Dash to your PC.. Then copy the retail dash to the C folder in xboxhdm. Then hook the hard drive to a PC and Boot from the CD you just made.. Xboxhdm will format and activate the FatX partitions on it..If the drive is bigger the 8gb it will format that also.. Once you have done this.. The xbox will boot into the retail Dashboard.. Then I would download a copy of Auto Installer (AID 4.53) And use it to setup your dashboard/apps you want installed... ITs the way I do it. And With your xbox being TSOP flashed you don't have to worry about locking the hard drive.
    Hope this helps.

Make sure you're using a 80 wire IDE cable, the default 40 wire one won't work with most sata adaptors.
(issues like the drive not reading disc or making clicking sounds when trying to, or the Xbox just not booting due to the dvd drive not showing or the hdd)

No luck with xboxHDM and no luck with the 80 wire IDE cable. But after xboxHDM it does now boot slayer more consistently, so at least a small win. So my own guess is that the sata>IDE connector is faulty so just ordered 2 different once.
