How can you RGB mod a PAL N64, how easy would that be and would it be cheaper to import a NTSC one?

Also when using an everdrive, could it switch between region software wise (as in playing NTSC games at 60 hz)?

Modding a French NUS-001 (FRA) model is the easiest of any N64 to mod for RGB and is, of course, PAL. You can buy a kit like this one to mod any other PAL consoles.

I noticed that one a while back. Has anyone installed any of their boards and can report back on how they perform?

Yes, i've installed one. Easy to install and works great, recommended.

If you want to buy one of those, I got a deal with the guy that would give you 15% discount, so would save you money in the process. http://www.bacman.co.uk/home/n64-rgb-mod/

I can't seem to find a price or order button anywhere on that site.

So I've started looking into finding a French n64 as I already had broken SNES laying around. So maybe with some luck some Frenchmen wants to sell me one.

Look on the link in my post above, to my site, shows on it the links to the parts of the site you need and even the code to get money off. Hand-holding in the right directions not enough? French N64's tend to be expensive off ebay and also if you look on threads of those that have used them, they seem to give disjointed horizontal lines.

No, it's the work by Otakus, which you'd know if you clicked on the link. His RGB board works on any console, and irrespective of if PAL or NTSC too.

Thanks mate, might have to do just that! Glad to hear it works nicely. I'm expecting a replacement power supply and some RGB cables for my Japanese N64 next week hopefully, will add that mod to the list and get my PAL unit sorted out too!

I understood it, but otaku doesnt seem to have any sort of pricing on its site. Apart from that in a few weeks I go on a vacation to france so no need for eBay.

Before he had a "checkout basket" for buying them, not sure where it has gone - send him a message if you want one and ask him about buying one.

You mean his crazy resistor-porn mod? From what I've seen of the boards, I doubt it. 'Inspired by' is probably more likely.

Will RGB modding a PAL N64 put it in 60hz and playback games at full speed or will it be PAL-50?

Of course it will stay in PAL! If it will be played in 50Hz or in 60Hz depends on the cartridge itself and is software controlled. However, if you play a NTSC-game on your PAL console, you will get a PAL60 output, but - and here is the drawback - the sound will be in as like as it would be a PAL game. This causes errors in some cases...

The mod itselfs simply calculates an RGB Signal out of the PPUs data output. However, the RGB-Mod is highly recommened in my point of view :D

Pretty sure you'll need a converter of sorts to play NTSC games on a PAL system or vice versa. Are you absolutely sure that a PAL system playing a NTSC game will output in 60Hz? Never heard that before.

Just ordered an NTSC model off ebay that is compatible with the easy RGB mod, it only cost £20 plus £3 for the texas instruments video amp, so cheaper than buying the RGB mod kit for my pal unit :)

You should build this amp instead of the THS one:
    http://playoffline.wordpress.com/mod/n64rgb/

It's a bit better, as in sharper. I tried them both a few weeks ago.

    THS amp:

    Transistor amp:

Look at the top part of the A in "MARIO". In the THS shot the top part of the letter is noticeably softer. Both shots taken with my XRGB-mini set to 720p (because I normally use scanlines). It might seem like a really small improvement, but it does make a noticeable difference when looking at it from a distance as well :)

I'm quite sure but never checked it, because I've only PAL games and no everdrive 64. You may read it here: http://nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?topic=1788.0

I've paid for my N64-RGB-Mod just 13€ and 1 hour of my time :D It looks like this one here (actually, it's not mine - it is from timmaeh from circuit-board.de - but I have the same)

The way I read it, he (Guest) actually confirms that a NTSC game runs in 50Hz on a PAL system :) Otherwise why would you need patches, if the system ran in the games native refresh? :) I don't think the PAL N64 is capable of outputting in 60Hz, otherwise we would probably have seen a 50/60Hz mod long ago.

You can add a 50/60 switch to the MAV-NUS, not a VDC.

If you RGB mod there will be neither PAL or NTSC, since they are just color encoding.

Whether it's 50 or 60hz..... I have no idea. Since it's an N64, it would make sense for it to go along with what the cartridge is.
