With that chip you will be able to execute auto installer deluxe from the disc drive. That should prepare your xbox harddrive with the correct files and install unleash x if you want.

^^ i was referring to this for the console to be left on (i was reading it wrong, thought it froze before you got error response) not the actual error 14 service response.
    ...
anyway, YES, an ide compatible computer should set you back on track.
    study the babylon tutorials.
you have it installed, so you can create an xbhdm disk with it. :wink-new:
as for hardmods, that's in other users hands.
it's worth pointing out, babylon has it ALL, can do TSOP flashes...just i haven't tried those aspects myself.
    ...
set computer bios to boot from optical drive and disable ALL other boot priorities. (make sure bios detects BOTH devices though, REMOVE all other drives for this task)
make sure the optical drive is the slave and the hdd as master. (channel 0, flyer 1. hdd on plug 1 closest to the MB, and the optical drive on the same flyer on the end plug, 2)
    ...
all you require is a computer now, you have ALL the software you'll need. (for the sake of ease to brainmatter and blood pressure, create a cd sized xbhdm disk. if it works, sound. you're free to experiment naturally, but start at the baseline first and if the xbhdm shit works fine, give a dvd build a smash)
all the best! (i wonder if don felder plays xbox?) :witless:

    Thank you Amiga.

You have already explained so much, but I am still a bit confused.

Do you mind giving me just a run down, of what is needed here, to do a fix with a IDE PC?

I was looking at babylon tuts, and can see that the guy in the video uses EEPROM, but I dont have this?

BTW, I am bidding on another box, auction finishes in 5 hours, might get it for very cheap... :)

okay, if you DON'T have an eeprom, hotswap it is. (refer to an earlier response that's linked to emuxtras with the computer-to-xbox hdd hotswap)
    ...
rundown of all required if i'm understanding above:
    1, YOUR EEPROM.BIN (?) MANDATORY!
2, any computer with babylon installed.
3, exceute babylon xbhdm compiler as instructed by the text documents and tutorials.
    4, an ide compatible computer.
5, refer to my last response on the HW CFG in that ide computer to prepare hdd.
6, study the xbhdm aspect of this task and initiate.
7, put the recreated hdd back in the xbox and PROFIT!
    ...
if you DON'T have your eeprom.bin for that console, it's a hotswap/hardmod i'm afraid. (NO TSOP for 1.6'ers)
    ...
    have fun. :smile-new:
    [edit]
    typo.

Sorry mate, I meant a run down steps for hotswap.

Ok, so hardmod or hotswap then.... hmmm

I dont have the console EEPROM.

So now, I need to make a decision, whether to purchase the mod chip from that store, or get an old PC with IDE.

I am amazed at how supportive you guys are on this forum!

    Cheers

in this case, ignore step 1 and carry on, but it's hotswap when it comes to putting that hdd in the xbox.
if/when you get a sorted mod, BACKUP YOUR EEPROM. (in fact, if you do opt for hardmod, back it up anyway just incase it fails, and sometimes hardmods DO. the eeprom.bin is the cavalry rescue when all else is cut off from you.)
    ...
if you can get a hardmod, objectively speaking, it WILL make things much easier for you in the long run, it's just the soldering that you use to pay for it. (so to speak) :wink-new:
    good luck.
    ...
oh, if you do get a hardmod, create a separate subject so the hardmodders can help, i don't have a f*ckin clue there. (and can't advise based on lack of hands-on experience)
    [edit]
the hotswap rundown is here: ...and since i only pulled it off once, i'm NOT qualified to break it down, sorry.

    Thanks Amiga.

In case I do pick another box today, can all consoles be soft-modded using AID or Babylon?

    Cheers

    yes, yes they can.
i've NOT encountered an xbox that can't be modded one way or another. (if the console works, brilliant!)
    have fun! :wink-new:

You won't be able to run AID without a mod at all by the way. You'll need to load an exploit in order to do so.

So really you're best method would be a modchip or hotswap.

    Hotswapping is rather simple;

XBOXHDM, has a EEPROM folder in it. Basically throw your backedup EEPROM in that folder, and the MSDASH files in the C folder.

    Burn to a CD.

You will not need to HOTSWAP if you have your EEPROM. You can unlock and lock as you please with XBOXHDM unlocking/locking tools. (Option 2)

    Unlock the disk.

Restart, and select option 1, and build hard disk from scratch.

Once finished load up XBOXHDM again, select option 2. Lock hard disk with EEPOM.

Drop hard disk back into the Xbox and fire it up again.

You should now be at unmodded state, without error.

Now you can load an exploit to softmod, or load the modded dash as your MSDASH files.

    ^^ good point.
in the midst of the chaos, lost track of the initial part.
any console can be modded if it works fine, but you have to ping it first, use memory card exploit like the splinter cell hack. (and a retail copy of SS. if your console is NTSC-U, you'll require the correct regional exploit and it's corresponding retail game)
it's at that point you back up eeprom and retrieve it via FTP.
once you have that, you're gold to do what you will.
as for hotswap, i don't recommend it this end, but others are clearly experienced at it (and it's just as viable mod if you have the stones/PATIENCE for it) so it's on their heads...and yours.

    Thanks guys...

I actually did back up EEPROM, but on xbox hdd.... lol (can I retrieve this?)

About modchips, is there still any reliable sources that sell these? For version 1.6

I will most probably pick up another or two boxes in the next few days, as a collector, I hate leaving broken console as is.

So, once I do the Splinter Cell Hack....etc.

How do I copy the EEPROM onto the memory card?

    Thanks Fellas!

oh, for the love of sanity.
we need to establish communication here...
anyway, use this guide, find the directory where your eeprom is and go with the flow, pull it off the xbox and onto the computer!

    [edit]
if your da$h is FUCKED (error 14) you aint getting that off. (it's as good as not backed up because of that error 14)
when console is PROPERLY modded/NO ERROR 14/WORKING DA$H, use unleashx to copy that eeprom to mc using it's inbuilt filehandler. (take note of where the eeprom is saved, the mc volumes are usually H:/, I:/ and J:/)
    youtube should help, take care!

You can still save the XBOX if your eeprom is on the HDD, maybe you can pull it off the box using FTP as amiga1200 suggested, or perhaps it can be retrieved with the drive out of the 'box? Then when you have it take the time to learn how to use XBHDM.

The one thing I've learned over the years about both hardware and software modding is that knowledge is king, read multiple guides, ask questions, re-check all the necessary steps and then, and only then, attempt the mod.

But if you can retrieve the eeprom, your 'box will be fine, it's essentially a PC, and if you've spent any time playing with them you'll know that until actual hardware damage occurs (yes I know there's a couple of exceptions) you can fix pretty much any mistake.

Of course a lost eeprom kind of counts as hardware damage in this situation.

Thank you all for your help!

I have just purchased another xbox with two controllers for $10.

Another question, I can still use the current box for spares, right, motherboard, dvd drive, case and power supply can be used a spares on other units?

I know xbox 360 had its dvd drives locked to motherboards, but I dont think this is the case with original xbox?

    Thanks

Yep, DVD-ROM Drives can be swapped to any unit, case depends on versions, PSU depends on motherboard version.

    yes!
keep the parts. :smile-new: (and correct, 3shitsty drives are keyed to the console they came with, xbox, not so.)

    Many thanks to you all!

Since I already own most of retro consoles, maybe I will leave this new xbox as is. Main reason why I wanted it hacked is to do LAN, and not needing to have two discs of the same game.

Also, looking at buying a chipped Halo Edition model. Going by what you guys told me, if its chipped, is harder to stuff up!

    Cheers

Modchips just allow better recovery, like booting from D:\ instead of the hard disk.

Picked up my new xbox today. My god those Duke controllers are huge.

How can I tell if its version 1.6 or not?

    Serial number is 2056645 23305

    DVD drive: Phillips

One thing that was so obvious about this new machine, is that its a lot quieter.

Also, how does one know if the console runs at 480p or not, I have a component cable. In video options I can only choose Widescreen, and PAL 60.
