SEGA Mega Drive. Who doesn't know that machine. ¿And who doesn't know it's expansion, the Mega CD? I'm sure that more than one person in this forum does love the Mega CD. I've had a Mega CD 2 for all my life, it's ok and works well, but always, since I saw it in some shop which sure is closed now, I've always wanted to have it, the Mega CD, the one which is under the MD... I don't know, that thing was AWESOME. Don't tell me that it rocks your socks, even if half of the games released for the system we're shitty FMV 12 FPS games. Well, I knew eBay but had never bought nothing, until my sister made a eBay + PayPal account, ¿and what was the first thing I searched? Mega CD. Expensive, in horrible shape, o simply, zero results. I knew that the Mega CD was quite rare, but not onto those extremes. After searching for a long time, Yakumo was selling mint Mega CD's, since as we all know he lives in Hard Gay Land and getting them is cheap. Wow, I was going to have a Mega CD!!! OH MY GOD!!!! h:h:h:h: I was crying of emotion. :crying: But I didn't know how many troubles I was gonna have. ¿Why? BECAUSE THIS THING IS A PIECE OF SHIT First, the CD-Rom unit. Yeah, I know that in those old electronics CD Rom drives are prone to failing, but no, but no, it isn't failing like a PC Engine CDROM2 or a Turbo Duo. No. THE ENGINEER WHO DESIGNED IT DESERVES GETTING FIRED OF SEGA. ¿WHY? BECAUSE EVERY THIN, CHEAP PLASTIC MADE, FRAGILE PARTS ARE FIXED WITH SUPERGLUE. YEAH, LOCTITE SUPERGLUE 3. Result, some fucker in Correos threw it to the ground = all the small parts got loose. "At least", only the tray open and close wheels got broken, so with some luck I can play games, I must open the Mega CD for changing the disc, but well, it works. Still, the troubles have only begun. The Mega CD manual says that if the TV is mono, like mine, you only have to connect the white cable from the Mega Drive AV cable to the TV. YEAH, SURE. It sounds chopped. But the manual has a solution for that. We've gotta connect the Mega Drive Mixing out to the Mega CD Mixing input, and to the Mega CD two RCA's which go to my speakers. I mean, ¿¿It was too much hard to put the fucking mixing by the expansion slot?? ¿It's obligatory having eight wires connected to the machine? And if you connect the 32X to that abomination of mankind, its a total of ELEVEN WIRES. But well... SOUND STILL SOUNDS CHOPPY. WHAT WE'RE THEY THINKING!!??
Does anybody know a good shop / seller of MegaCD Units (not MegaCD2) who ships to europe? Because i love the MegaCD too!
I have searched but have been unable so far to find any technical details on the drive mech Im just guessing here but would it be possible to replace the drive mech with a pc cdrom drive ? or is the interface totally incompatible ?
Don't even think about comparing to the PCE CDROM2, they're built like tanks! I think I have PAL mk1 at home somewhere that I got at a car boot for a few quid with a load of stuff, but it wasn't working, presumeably the lens is dead. The drive mechanism is OK though. If I find it when I go home I could send it out to you if you like.
I would love my Mega CD 2 if I could fix it somehow, it's missing the little plastic disc that the CD rests on so it can spin. :-(
Any fuel knows that if you want a Mega CD then you go and buy a Wondermega. These don't feel cheap at all and motorised top loading is the best thing ever.
I'd say stay away from the front-loaders. Sure, they look nicer and have a prettier startup screen, but something in the drive often fails (as in mine.) I recently got a working MCD2 and swapped in the BIOS chip from the MCD1 to get the prettier screen...
I can get very good condition Mega CDs for anyone but they aren't that cheap plus they can break in transit. The laser mounting in them isn't the best in the world when it comes to shipping. I pack stuff very well yet I've had 3 Mega CD systems arrive with problems. Mind you, that's 3 out of about 20 in the last year. Still, compared to saturns that's a lot. Saturns are the CD console equivalent of the N64. Bloody tank that can take loads of shit yet still work perfectly. Yakumo
Mega CD front loaders used a Sony lens, if I'm not mistaken. Replacement part number is KSS-240a. The Mega CD 2 uses surprisingly common JVC or Hitachi parts as well. I'll see if I can dig up part numbers for those two units.
 Well, that explains why they always die so quickly. how about the PC Engine Duo? Does that use a Sony lense as well? From experiance they are the worse than the Mega CD:-( Yakumo
Actually, now that you mention it, I believe the Duo does use a Sony lens as well. KSS-220 is the model for that one. Well, duh. Over at GamesX we started collecting part numbers for the benefit of hackers and home repair work. Link: http://nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?topic=2776.0
i have seen a lot of those "ones" in junk corner recently. all failed :-( i will go for a JVC wondermega. the "two" one just looks like dogshit in your garden.
The Mega CD problem isn't the lenses actually, but the drive assembly... It was assembled by donkeys with eyefolds in Taiwan... It's so bad.
 I love that description  Yakumo PS: eyefolds is actually Blindfolds:nod: I'm not making fun of your English, just giving a helpful tip.
