I like coding N64 and it's taken 4 years, but I think I'm finally to a point where I may be able to accomplish something decent. Here are some of the projects. None of them are "completed" except for funnelcube which is ridiculously simple. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFo91pDiBn4 Any very simple ideas for a game? Not tetris or pong, just something that I can actually finish. If anyone is good at low-poly modeling, you are welcome to help out! I'd like to get something going.
I'm not here to give ideas but to say that some of that stuff you've produced is very impressive. I'd like to see you put that racing engine to good use. Most N64 racing games are complete turd. yakumo
What kind of project were you thinking of, something that utilizes the N64 or just something simple, like a simple run-and-jump á la Mario 2D? I must say that video was very impressive.
Very impressive marshallh! From the looks of it, that racing engine beats everything ever commercially released on N64. How in the world did you tease such crisp and detailed graphics out of the good old fog box? That scripting engine also looks huge. Would be great for cutscenes or camera flights, wouldn't it? Now to come to your question, I am still dreaming about a Metroid 64. But that would be a HUGE project, more of a lifetime achievement.
Incredible work!! 0:51 made me shit a brick, just for the record. The interiors were incredible, very crisp and smooth controls, it looked. A good first-person something? Then the canyon thing - maybe Panzer Dragoon 64? I think I agree with Yakumo, a racing game (prefrebly arcade-y?)... I'd imagine one with a twist but not in the physics or mechanics department (so, that leaves visual?), but that's my dream. It seems you've got an exellent grasp of many different styles, but which one do YOU like the most? I've always wanted to get into modelling beyond just engineering-style CAD crap, but never know what to put my time in, what program(s) and what projects and what's relevant between the two!
Pretty impressive stuff for n64. Thats not an easy system to work with. Based on you're demo, I'd say try pushing the racer. Other then that, maybe do a small 3d like puzzle game? Could always do what i've been wanting to do but keep quiting on. 3D version of picross or guru logic champ. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guru_Logi_Champ
hmmm the back alley demo could be made into a "Alleycat64(ish)" game and the demo you have called penguins could perhaps be ported into a "Sentinel(ish)" game the funnel cube game is to me inspired by Bejeweled Twist, and yeah I am impressed by the car demo too. thumps up man.
I don't know how simple it would be to pull off on N64 but I agree with others that the racing demo looked quite good and perhaps that would be something to push further. Might not be simple but seems straight forward.
believe you me, SETA had their head up their ass for too long on Rev Limit. Even when nintendo stepped in to give them a hand there wasn't anything that set the game apart. World Driver Championship is arguably the best "serious" racer on the n64.
Marshall, I think you should finish the Alleycat 64 game. The premise could be that you have to annoy the local neighbours wthout getting hit by boots/cold water buckets/etc. Poo on their door step, catch birds, meow late into the night below their window. Scare other cats off your turf.
thanks for the replies. I would like to continue the racer but doing all the art assets myself is not something I can do. for some reason my video editor drops every other frame, the actual demos are running at full 30fps. argh!
If you need art I'll be glad to help as much as I can. I don't have access to any special N64 tools but if it's something that can be done in photoshop/illustrator then there's no problem.
Ah, a homebrew coder's arch nemesis. =) There are so many little games I would love to do but I don't due to art. I'm very picky about it since if I don't have anything to visualize what i'm trying to accomplish, I find it hard to continue working on the demo/game. So I spend most of my time writing an engine then trashing it and starting over again. :-( If it's an art issue, why not try finishing ally cat. You had a pretty decent chunk of it going.
I would like to see you do some water. Also, N64 could do so many triangles/sec. However, they never made a demo proving this. Would love to see a max triangle demo.
Simple? Maybe find a game out there that's got a lot of its resources ripped already and try to make a small remake on N64? Just a thought.
