If you had the rarest game ever, would you immediately sell it?

Looks like someone found a copy of Air Raid for the Atari 2600 in their basement, CIB. Also includes instructions which no other copy has ever had before.

    http://www.gamegavel.com/item.cgi?show_item=0000687017

So thats such an amazing find and of course they hit the jackpot. However if you watch the first video at that link, that collector has quite a few atari 2600 games in box that hes been storing for years. Air Raid just happened to be in there.

So if you've been saving these games for years, why sell now? Sure its an immediate cash grab but what if you saved it for five years. Or maybe never sold it and considered it the crown jewel of your collection?

What would you do? I think if I was that hardcore of an atari collector to have kept many games in box I wouldn't be so ready to part with the best thing in my collection. There are some things more important than money!

i seen this auction the other day its crazy i wonder if it will beat the highest price ever seen for Air Raid i also wonder what else he has in that box that might be valuable since the way he managed to get the game all those years ago i hope to have at least one game worth 1k or more one day

I'd sell the fucker immediately, while people still care so much about expensive old games that every single auction gets its own Kotaku article.

In my case there are several factors that I'd have to consider:
    -Do I need the money?
-Is this (one of) my favorite game(s)?
-Will its value decrease if I keep it any longer?
-Will I be able to store it in the appropriate conditions to keep it in working condition?

And maybe other things that don't come to my mind right now...

I'd dump the game if there isn't a ROM of it already then sell it. Money is more important to me for health and life concerns than a rare game I most likely don't give 2 shits about.

Sorry if anyone is disappointed. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Side note: The game mentioned in first post is currently sitting at a bid of $17,850 USD.

Unless I myself, a family member or close friend was in dire need of quick cash, I'd definitely keep the game. I'm neither greedy nor an obsessive collector, so it will be decided on what's going on at the time.

No question I would take pictures, video document it in detail then sell it ASAP for as much as possible. No sense having a single game when the money from it could buy me consoles and many other desirable things I cannot currently afford. Some rich collector who must have it gets what they want and I profit from it, everyone wins.

At the moment. All unreleased AAA games.

So no, I wouldn't sell them.

Depends on if it's something I really want and whether I need the money or not. Most of the gaming items I want aren't incredibly rare, or at least are not on a level anywhere near something like this. The one very rare item that I would have a very hard time parting with if I ever got ahold of one is a prototype M2 unit. If I ever got one of those, I'd probably never sell it. Likewise, I currently own a Victor Wondermega - not incredibly rare, but not all too common, and pretty valuable among Sega fans. I don't foresee ever wanting to sell it unless I'm really desperate (or if I got another one).

Since we are moving on to consoles and what-not now: I'd love to get a hold of a first edition Xbox XDK original system from the early era of our millennium. I want one of the first systems that was housed in a PC casing. Like in one of ASSEMbler's videos. I know I can make my own later revision XKD from a retail console but where's the fun in THAT? It wouldn't be rare or special...

I love the history that came with the item - great story and the photo of the store certainly looks credible. In his situation, he's not even had it in his house for years or known where it is, so why not sell?

Me personally, it'd be hard. If it was a system I really loved, there's no way I'd sell unless I really needed the money. The way things are at the moment, though, I'd probably sell it to pay off my parents' mortgage. I liked the 2600, but it's not a huge passion, so I guess having once owned it would suffice for me.

I love reading about rare and unreleased games, but I would sell it because I have no desire to collect anything. At home, my wife and I have our furniture and clothes, that's it. The books we read, games we play and things we make we sell or give away. We have very little want to material things. The only reason I may keep it is for fear the the value may rise after selling it.

Depends on what game it is. If it will be like that PAL AES Kizuna Encounter thing - game itself isn't rare at all, and it's all about packaging, i won't think too much about selling it.
If it will be something like really rare game without any ROMs/ISOs/whatever floating around - then it will be like dump first, think later, depending on real life situation.

if i had the rarest game ever and i'd played through it and completed it, yeah i'd probably sell it let it go to a new home for £10 as a matter of principle i don't like all this zomgwtf$$$$££££$£$£$£ daft prices on "rare" games

Well if there's some rich people willing to pay a few thousands for a really - why not ? I probably won't sell it for a price of a new car, but for a price of a good computer or something. People who don't have enough money can just play the ROM etc.
What i don't like is VGA crap - i never sold any quite common game for more than hundred or so.

I'd definitely sell it. Because what do I need to hang onto a game for if it just sits there and does nothing? And now is the time to sell, not in 20 or 30 years when anyone that cares about it is dead. Usually extremely rare/expensive games, sealed particularly, are not anything I'd hang onto when they are worth so much. I'm interested in *playing* games as well as having a nice collection *to play*. I don't have interest in buying any games that I will never play. But many people do just that.
