If you had the rarest game ever, would you immediately sell it?

Loan it to a museum. I get to keep ownership of the item and I damn well know it is better protected there than in my apartment.

Something similar did happen to me in the recent past though not nearly as rare. My neighbor won an auction for a storage unit and found some old Mac hardware inside and gave it to me. One of the items was an accelerator card for old 68k units with an adapter. The card was 10mhz short of the fastest one made but the adapter was the rarest one ever made due to lack of demand for the specific version.

I sold the adapter for $110 and the accelerator for $50 IIRC. I had no way to test them and I got lucky that they did in fact work. If I had a compatible Mac I may have just kept them and put them to use but I have enough junk around. At least I know they went to good homes and are actually being used.

I'd sell it immediately. Owning the rarest of anything in the world would feel like a burden.

So great reading everyone's opinions. If you decide to sell and not keep, I think selling immediately is probably the best option. Keeping it for a few years means anything can happen to the collectible game market. It could bottom out like the comic market where the only expensive items are the books from the 30s and maybe early 60s Marvel books.

Personally it it was something I was really passionate about (a prototype psp for example like someone mentioned the M2) I'd have to keep it.

The funny thing is, the bid is almost 18.000 and I think is going for 20.000. If I have a rare game like those for sure I sell it as fast I can before it get damage.

Repeat of what most have said, but it makes more sense in the grand scheme of things to sell something that wanted as soon as possible. You never know when another might come along and screw the value of yours, plus despite the idea of stuff increasing in value as it ages, there's not really any way to measure that. I still remember when something like Stadium Events was like Air Raid, and now look how much that game's cropped up in recent years. Usually when one appears, others follow suit, so if you have a chance at money I'd go for it before you end up cheating yourself, especially if you have the "investor" mentality that seems to be becoming more popular these days. That current eBay auction guy has a similar idea, his ends before the GameGavel one in better condition does, clearly in an attempt to get the most of it now since after the other one sells for whatever ending price it does, that will end up being a standard which lesser condition copies won't ever be able to match.

If it were something I was passionate about, like the only known prototype of an unreleased game, I'd probably feel the same, especially since for me personally at least, the data on there which I'd dump would be all that matters. Selling the cart/CD afterwards would allow me to further afford more stuff, after all.

i would never sell it because once sold you have to pay taxes on it
and the government is gonna want to know where the large windfall came from
let alone want there dirty little hands to get a cut

large sums of money are never in cash no a days so there would be bank records
so it would come back to bite you

i would never ever sell it but i would sure as hell insure it

If I was never going to play it I'd sell it without thinking twice, and for the kind of money that's going for even if it was the only copy of my favourite game you could have it. $20,000 is an utterly obscene amount for some chips, plastic and paper.

The whole concept of hanging onto things just because they're rare kind of goes over my head. It was made by human beings to be played and enjoyed the same way a painting was, or a book or whatever, the idea of putting something like that in a fireproof case in a locked room just because I WANT IT seems petulant and morally repugnant.

If it's worth 20K yeah I'd sell it. 20K could get me so many more games, than just one rare one...

    this one speaks the truth.
    Down With that sorta thing!

although its different displaying something for example with nice artwork. some games have amazing artwork or just generally look cool.

but its the same with people who have barns and warehouses full of classic cars and keep them all locked away and never used, its sad

They do that to preserve the cars, and lower the risk of damage to them... I guess you can't really compare cars to a video game.

and i assume they dont play the "rare" video game and keep it sealed / complete in a glass case to preserve it and lower risk of damage?

i understand why they do it, just dont agree with it. but you can definatly compare a classic game in a collection to a classic car in a collection if they're going for 20k upwards and both sitting there doing nothing

Never thought of that... You're right, I have my game collection to enjoy and play them while I can - because hey, I could just drop dead tomorrow.

I would keep it until I completed a fullset so I could brag on forums like atari age, collect my "Atari/Nes/Whatever fullset badge", and post an auction to pocket some money. Those pricey games are bullshit, most of the times they're awful/unplayable. No reason to keep 'em around, I say.

I'd scan the box art and manual for sure. sell sell sell.
but there are the keepers (to me the ones I loved and enjoyed) not anything super rare atm ofc im sure but even if they someday reach that level of rarity.. I'm still keeping them...unless..well then theres the whole I'm broke thing... *shrugs* but still I've held onto my games.

Scanning manuals and taking high res photos of cartridge/disc is obvious thing as well as dumping the game if there's no dumps available. Anyone who won't do it is stupid :)

I think it would depend on what it is, seeing as we're also talking about keeping things for the sake of keeping them as a concept.

Games actually mean nothing to me. I think I'd sell it immediately if I couldn't also make a dump for everyone else to enjoy.

Consoles and hardware, on the other hand, I would want to completely exhaust any use I could have for it, and squeeze out any bit of learning that I could. I don't think it's owning the hardware, but rather the knowledge and learning that can be gained from it that interests me. For example, if someone delivered a GSCube to my door tomorrow morning, I'd take all the photos I could, tweak and modify every game I own to run it on the cube, and make schematics and dumps of the hardware, and then sell it, and use that money to move on to a new piece of kit.
