Sorry, this doesn't really have to do with Xbox Development. However, I was curious about playing imports on Xbox, so I was looking into the Xecuter chip. But then I found a bit of info on using 007: Agent Under Fire as a boot disc. Does anyone know how to pull this off or if it works similar to other boot discs (eg. Utopia for DC)?
The 007/mechassault/splinter cell stuff is actually a save exploit. Theres one package (I forgot it's name) that will let you run the disk and it'll install it and you can uninstall it without ever needing to mod it. Just as good as a modded XBox as well. There are no straight up boot disks for dvd+/-r media at all, the design of the XBox prevents it (has something to do with the way it loads XBEs). If you don't plan on going online a chip is better, this is fine if you aren't willing to solder or don't see the need in shelling out the cash for a chip. As for an Xecuter chip I highly recommend the 2.6CE. Mine has been wonderful the whole way through. The Xenium ICE isn't too bad either. For imports you don't have to worry, the BIOS you use as a replacement basically ignores region code. That does lead to problems with some of the last releases, I think GTA:SA being one of them. EDIT: Almost forgot, you need some way of getting the save file onto the XBox. An action replay was the item of choice but I've had issues getting it's software to recognize the save file. Some people have used straight up USB flash drives and gotten it to copy that way. So long as your XBox is a 1.2-1.5 you're pretty much gonna want a chip. 1.0-1.1 have solder in the LPC header which makes it EXTREMELY difficult by comparison to install. 1.6 and above just require an LPC rebuild, takes a bit of time but it's not difficult.
There are no true boot disc, but some games allows an exploit (007 Under Fire, Mechassault, Splinter Cell 1) that makes you able to install a soft-mod onto your xbox : no need to open it, no need to buy/install a modchip. Nowadays, it's a very easy, reliable and safe procedure. You just need one of the three game previously cited, a memory card, a way to transfer saves from a computer to a memory card and it's done ! And it's as efficient as a modchip (and almost free).
Ok, so using 007 as a bootdisk isn't a very accurate description... My box has been soft modded for sometime. So, I'm fairly familiar with file transfering and stuff. So I basically just need to find this package APE speaks of, put it on the Xbox, and it should work? ps Thanks for the help! :icon_bigg
If you're soft modded, just go. Once you can boot into EvoX, Unleash X or XBMC, you can run homebrew, backups or imports.
So is your Xbox already modded or not? I used the "Krayzie Ndure Installer" together with Splinter Cell. As soon as you have a way to transfer the modified savegame to your xbox you're set. The installer itself is very user friendly. For more information check out http://www.xbins.org/ and search for "installer".
Yes, it's soft modded. I'll have to try out an import, maybe I should've tried one out before starting the thread but I don't have one at the moment. I'll report back later. Thanks for the info. ray:
Yeah his Xbox is modded. I modded Jon's Xbox the second time him and I hung out almost 2 years ago. Heh. anyway, He asked me awhile ago and on the Digit Press forum someone was trying to run imports on his softmodded Xbox and it wasn't allowing him to which is why I couldn't give him an answer and he posted it here. I would try it on one of my softmodded Xbox but I have no imports. http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=100316&highlight=xbox+imports at the time he asked me, on digit press no one confirmed you can do it. problem solved. ^_^
Yeah, so I can play imports. Now the hard part, actually finding imports to play. There's what, maybe 5 Japanese Xbox games on eBay?? :banghead:
Check out the known import stores. PlayAsia has a few cheap games. Also if you're looking for something in particular just drop me a line. Willing to check out the local shops to help out a gamer in need.
I looked around Play-Asia...they don't have much in stock as far as Xbox games go...just your basic best sellers for the most part. Here's a few that I'm interested in... Metal Wolf Chaos Muzzle Flash N.U.D.E. Thousand Land Pretty much any shooters, puzzle, or fighting games. I know the Xbox failed in Japan so there probably isn't too many good games to import... If you do see an interesting titles let me know.
as far as i know quite a lot of xbox games were never region encoded, so the games may work on a unmodded xbox or not, it all depends on if the developer put a flag in the default.xbe file to region lock it, there is a list somewhere of what games were region locked or not so have a google for it but as far as playing imports on a softmodded xbox, they will all work 100%, so really no need to do a hardmod hope that helps...
Also I suggest checking out Magatama,I use to play this game all the time, kind of like Ninja Gaiden but weird. The game is in japanese but you can figure it out without knowing any japanese at all.
I always heard/read that most Xbox games are not region encoded so when I went to Japan I bought 5 or 6 JPN Xbox games, and when I got home surprise suprise! NOT A SINGLE GAME WORKED! I never found a compatibility list on the web because almost everyone modded their Xbox and simply dont care. There isnt anyother way to play imports besides soft/hard modding, right???
I have never seen a region free xbox jpn game. The ones that are region free are some ntsc and pal games for the most.
The XBox was originally intended to be region free allowing the devs to encode it or not. I don't think that was how it ended up but the 360 is that way, although most games are encoded.
