as far as i know the backgrounds are static images, then any foreground objects are rendered over the top, then they apply the bounding boxes to various areas to stop you from walking through a table, chair etc. and give it a 3d feel

    Sad :/

I know it's a little off topic but I got ask, what about the 3 first games that got released on PC? Did they got any improvement on the background? Or is it the same resolution as the PS1 version?

Actually yes, Resident Evil 3 has unique higher resolution backgrounds on both the PC and Dreamcast.

I'm sure the DC/PC version of RE2 was higher res also. I know that the 2006 japanese re-release on PC has higher 480p FMV's

Yes. A tad since the DC port is based on the PC version of RE2, the character models got cleaned up and all FMV cinemas run at a higher resolution of 640x480. Its far and away the best port of RE2 on a game console.

Resident Evil 2 has been modded as Sherry as the main character and new enemies, which looks really cool and the dev is coding it for the DC I believe. I cant seem to post links anymore, so cannot link to it.

I would say the Game Cube models are better than the DC and PC version. GC has smooth 3D model while on the DC and PC they are shaky like the PS1 models. Backgrounds look cleaner on the DC and PC but they also look brighter. I think the FMV as a bit washed out on both DC and PC as well. I might have to look that closer though. I remember Dot50Cal did a comparison on THIA a while back but I couldn't find the thread. I think it had more to do with the FMV difference from each version though and not the models.

I always thought the Dreamcast version was the best looking console version, it could have been my TV back in the day but my friend and I found the GC backgrounds were really washed out versus the DC version, the blacks in particular seemed to perform better on DC we found, of course this could have been the RGB cables and CRT's we were using back then....

I'd rank the GC and DC versions very close to each other the Nintendo 64 version next and lastly PlayStation.

The character models are exactly the same, I've compared them myself from all the versions of RE3 released.
The rendering technique of the PS1 Version was not changed in the PC Version (considering it's a direct PS1 Port) thus it looks shaky and under watery like, I was looking for a solution to this but it seems there isn't any .. (RE3 PC)
That however was fixed in the Game-Cube Build of the game, were the rendering of 3D Models was made smooth+solid and stable, probably to make the game look better on that console.

RE3 PC Lacks the option to choose which display / software / renderer to use, if it had one it would've been solved (apparently ..), Proof is the normal version of RE2 PC, Which has graphics configuration, normally it will be shaky and under-watery like PS1 but if I configure it to use "Unknown Card" option it will look fine as ever, like SourceNext Ver and RE3 GC.

The models in RE2 Gamecube Version are the same too, you can copy them over and over to any version and they still look the same in each version, where did this info come from ? :S

So the best version of RE3 is game cube. RE2 is PC.

What about the first game? Do you have any improvement over PSX while playing on PC?

I believe the saturn version is exactly the same as the PSX one.

    From wikipedia:
[h=3]Windows version[edit][/h]The Windows version featured the uncensored footage from the Japanese version, but the opening intro is in full color rather than black and white. Support for 3D accelerators was added as well, allowing for much sharper graphics. Two new unlockable weapons were added, a MAC-10 for Jill and an FN Minimi for Chris. New unlockable outfits for Chris and Jill were added as well.

This definitely ISN'T the case - the Saturn conversion of Biohazard/Resident Evil uses completely different 3D models with lower resolution textures and significantly reduced polygon counts, partly to accomodate for the way Sega's console natively renders quadrilaterals, but mostly to keep the frame rate at an acceptable level. Also, the lack of Gouraud Shading and less obvious real time light sourcing makes for a much rougher-looking product, though I still favour the Saturn edition because of the extra Battle Mode and main game alterations (such as there being a new enemy type known as a Tick plus an exclusive additional Tyrant encounter).

The Saturn port is indeed a weird one. It looks extremely well made, technically speaking, but it also feels kinda half assed due to Ticks being basically a recolor of Hunters with different claws and other stuff retconned lated or that simply makes no sense.

The only two versions of RE2 I've played were the N64 and the Playstation (if there are multiple releases of RE2 on the PSX then I don't know which version I played, sorry) versions, and I *much* prefer the N64 version because it had direction controls, so that you moved the analogue stick in the direction that you wanted your in-game character to move. This is massively (and I mean massively, at least to me) better than the rotate and move mechanics, which I find to be restrictive.

If I remember correctly there are differences between the original PC ports and the SourceNext versions which are superior.

I just used the wrong words thats all. The way they are rendered is what I meant. You can clearly see that in the DC and PC versions especially if you pay attention to the characters outlines it has that shakiness from the Ps1 version while the GC version is smooth. But you already covered all that.

I remember the biggest changes were modern DirectX support 9.0+ and higher resolution FMV movies at 640x480. Maybe the models are rendered better as well?

    Check this out:

    http://www.the-horror.com/forums/showthread.php?2236-RPD-Dispatch-1-Playing-RE3

I think this thread over at THIA covers most of the main differences. The movies and what FPS they run at for each release is mentioned in there as well.
