Regarding their process for the voice over and audio after speaking to a large amount of voice actors across the series and other Capcom titles were that they had the voice actors record for their timing over extremely rough versions of the pre-rendered cutscenes.

That is to the extend of blocky, basic models, little to no textures excluding a couple to serve as key references for the staff at the time of the recording. The voice actors would then do their lines or sounds within particular on-screen markers and would do retakes under the voice over director.

The sound may be scored early on in the project with just the scenario guide written with some concept art pieces but may have further compositions and adjustments later on one production has properly started to match the storyboards and the eventual rendered areas, characters and cutscenes.

Foley work may have been undertaken during time frames of motion capture, RE was more advanced with using motion capture fairly early on (Clock Tower 2 also used motion capture and began development early 1996, so using motion capture AND recording sound effects was one method one of the HUMAN Entertainment staff spoke about having similar methods to Capcom within their survival horror titles which were considered as rivals at the time). Though if the sound effects weren't recorded during motion capture or reference photoshoots for the cutscenes or storyboards, then they may have been done alongside the score.

That's just what I've found out from people working with Capcom and other companies using the same or similar development techniques at the time. (Sound: Hideaki Utsumi, Seiko Kobuchi, Yoshiki Sandou. Voice Acting: Lynn Harris, Alyson Court. Motion Capture/Foley Voice Over: Lisle Wilkerson, Guy Cihi. Voice Director/Casting Director: Ginny McSwain and a couple of guys involved in storyboards for a few other titles over at Ufotable).

There you go. That's one extremely well-informed response, Lamont. Thanks. I also recommend folks take a look at the early RE Zero test videos for when Rebecca finds the radio and is then set up on by the zombies, or any "making of" videos for your favorite CGI movies or TV shows. You'll see some of what he's talking about.

Let's also not forget that some of RE15's CGI models were most likely recycled and reworked for RE2's FMVs - if only to save time, since they already had them. That's at least one small part of them that's survived - if not actual video itself. A lot of other fans over the years have had fun figuring out which ones they were, and there was that whole "I see Leon's knife sheath!" business a while back that turned out to be spurious. The Team has talked a little bit about attempting to recreate period-correct models for any potential RE15 cutscenes, but such work is probably still a long ways off for them. After all, they've got their hands full now with rebuilding a playable game proper as it is.

No worries. I just figured I may as well confirm it as it's popped up in quite a few conversations with a few of the people I've listed as sources to see how they did their work on certain titles. The issue is that during the 90s a lot of scripts and placeholder stuff was used to prevent ideas being poached by other companies or leaked by people involved so there's going to honestly be a lot of confusion with the older stuff.

The Zero cutscenes are a good basis, though for something newer they could look at some of the development footage of RE4 showing Leon walking through a room without textures on and the "3.5" model being used as a placeholder.

If they were to try and recreate the FMVs the one technique I would probably go with is what I saw done with someone recreating models from Final Fantasy VIII - use screenshots from the FMVs as backgrounds in 3D rendering software and then map out the vertexes and faces over the top of the screenshots as references to get the same sort of look for any pre-rendered cutscenes due to the reuse and that Elza looks rather similar to Claire, give or take a couple of slight detail tweaks.

But that would be of course left until the majority of the work to fix playability issues would be done as the pre-rendered stuff isn't exactly needed for the time being, it's nice but again... Not exactly needed for a fan rework to make it available in a playable state.

Agreed. I don't envy D.Birkin's job one bit. He's got his work cut out for him. He's definitely got the talent ... but there's so much still to be done. Oh, well. I'm an old man and I tend to ramble. I'll be quiet now, and let others have the floor.

I haven't heard anything new. Then again, I haven't had time for the RE scene lately. Real job world issues and all that.

This is the thing I was curious about the most. The cut scenes. Its hard to believe that at least one image of a 1.5 CG movie has never leaked. Makes me think they were lying when they said "The videos were in hand".
Something would have been bound to of popped up.

I don't think that even RE2 had their cutscenes images before the release

Sure has but with something like this there's going to be droughts of updates.

I will say the pictures that the Team is showing on Facebook look incredible.

A side note, there is a pretty sweet RE2 fan project thats going on. Can't recall the name but I'll look it up after work.

You mean Behind The Mask? Gemini is coding it all from scratch and it will run on PS1 hardware.

Yup, that's right. Invader Games. I hadn't realized it was Hector and the like doing it until I had a chat with him via DeviantArt about me making a high res vector for something.

I wouldn't be surprised. Doing all of the programming and other modifications takes time, then you've got all of the general bug testing and quality control. It's an outright pain in the ass when you've checked thing repeatedly and have made a minor change and then BOOM, suddenly it crashes or any other problem under the sun occurs.

It's tiring and if they're constantly working on it, I could completely understand if they were feeling a tad burnt out (like I'm having somewhat of a break from TFF translation and possible PC graphics upgrade and translation) but that said - just because there haven't been updates doesn't mean they aren't working on stuff... It's just easier to get stuff done and then tease or post updates in-between.
