This is what I meant by a streets of rage. Sega pulled the plug on a fan project when they saw how bloody brilliant it was! Thankfully the game was finished but they removed the official download link practically a day after the official release.

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-09-30-resident-evil-2-retrospective

For a game that's well established in terms of its content, why did the author of this retrospective article on Resident Evil 2 - posted just today, no less! - feel the need to mention Elza Walker (albeit very briefly) years after most people had forgotten about its "1.5" prototype version? I reckon someone may have a little insider knowledge and that there might be some truth to the rumoured October release date, after all...

Not sure how that's even remotely connected to a not-so-probable October release. Seems more like nostalgia effect to me, especially now that RE6 is around us.

christmas or halloween would be a better release date.

A release on Halloween just makes sense.

Given how much time "simple" translations take, I'd say somewhere around 2013 feels more like a realistic guess.

Can we actually be sure just how long they've been working on this project? For all we know, most of the hard work may already be complete with an imminent release in the very final stages of preparation. Beside, that recent video suggests those responsible have enough spare time to put together response clips, so I reckon it's a case of sooner rather than later...

Generally though with translation projects they get announced as soon as they're started and everyones aware of it for the long process, with this we have no idea what state it was when it was revealed (wasn't and still isn't really announced as such, just whispered if you like) so we can't really judge a guess based on other similar projects.

What they've showed in the antiscam video can be usually produced in extremely early phases of homemade translations, meaning it could be way less complete than it looks like.

Could also be way further along than we expect, the secrecy surrounding this project just leaves us guessing how far along it is. Sidebar, i saw RE:Retribution today and i enjoyed it very much, so much that i'm considering getting RE6 this week even though the demo was mediocre to me.

Well, looking at the evidence, they've successfully replaced 3D models and updated unfinished textures, they're already capable of translating text strings into English, and they already have tools which to our estimation are capable of modifying 3D boundaries. I would honestly say the biggest hurdle has been overcome and they're at a point now where they can start doing the main bulk of the work, such as adding in and linking missing rooms, unlocking "beta" content (scenarios, cutscenes, etc), bug fixing, and so on. I'd like to think this project has passed alpha stages and is well under way, I imagine they're passed the main issues and doing some really amazing things. Guys like Martin Biohazard have done some amazing stuff with the retail games, at this point I expect they're doing work just as great, trying to find all of the prototypes secrets and make them playable in the build.

The editor looked very bare bone and most of the stuff in there seemed to be missing. Having only the camera part implemented isn't much for actually doing the rest of the work needed there.

You can tell by a few screenshots and a video that shows basically nothing? Usually you'd need far more than that. All we have seen so far only demonstrates that the project is real and is progressing, but doesn't give any hits whatsoever about global completion.

Not sure how that even compares. Two different types of hack and extreme differences in quality terms.

Yes I can tell from a few screen shots, at least I can make a good guess. I can tell that texturing and model swapping was successful, I can tell that script translation is probable, I can also tell the tools they have are capable of editing the 3D boundaries. One screen shot of the editor showed a retail background with 1.5 assets, as well as the options necessary to create their own or make edits to the existing 3D mesh.

Use your imagination, it's not hard to tell that they're pretty much ready to get on with the work. With the amount of time they've had who knows how much work they've done, likely quite a bit. And it was already confirmed by one person that people were trying to unlock the games secrets, with a hack like this which is trying to restore and get the most out of the build, work of this nature is to be expected. We've already seen the female zombie on the helipad, no one's sure if the zombie was supposed to be there but it's more than possible it was a result such hacking.
