I got my iPhone to use as a phone, not a Gameboy replacement. I need to sync my schedule in Entourage, get my emails and I use the iPod function quite regularly. It makes a good WiFi flash drive too, infact there a few useful Apps I use on a regular basis. iPhone Worms FTW. It's about the only game I play on it and it works really well with a multi-touch interface on a screen of that size. I do beleive that the the iPad will be a much more competent gaming device due to the increased screen size and power. Shit, for that much cash you're gonna want to do more with it than read ebooks and look at online porn videos (as long as they're HTML5, and not Flash). I think it's quite obvious that things like Street Fighter IV are never going to work on a touch screen. There are however many games where multi-touch does work well: puzzle games, Worms and the possibilities for RPGs are quite awesome.
LOL, I nearly fell off my chair when I read this, it's exactly how I'm travelling the world in relative comfort.
Seems like most people use it as a Blackberry replacement, the games are just distractions. Which is not to say they're not any good, but they don't really compete with a DS or PSP. People don't really buy Iphones for the games. (I myself have not bothered becasue I have no interest in a smudgy gadety Appley piece of crap, but I might sorta-kinda be more interested in an Ipad, when they don't cost a million dollars.)
Ha, this is true. Lots of nice ideas that after the novelty has worn off reveal themselves to be just novelties.
HYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPEHYPE Did I mention hype? Even the iPad which was a massive fiasco (no flash? no multitasking? not even a fucking camera for iChat?) got people running to reserve one, just imagine how they're going to react to iPhone4 which most agree will pack most of those features, instead of being one bigass iPod touch. Office-wise the BB still kickass, the iPhone just recently got copypasta, and IRL keys are second to none. The problem isnt the actual games for the iphone, but how it was overplayed in this sense, and how most buyers fall for that.
Yeah, the BB is superior for corporate environments. We have no control over iPhones and also emails are much harder on the touch screen.
according to this article (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/62924), in 2009 game revenue from iPhone and iPod Touch games surpassed PSP game revenue in the United States so, mmm, yea
From that article.^ " Though these figures rely heavily on estimation and extrapolation" So basically their charts are meaningless.
Like most of what apple fans say... Thats my point: not that iphones games are bad but that some people, not just non-gamers but mere pundits that didnt even knew the dynamics of the game market got everyone worked-up on the idea of that platform defeating all the others. Is like 9 years ago when journos said the segway was going to change how cities were going to be built. How many of those had any idea of the scale of what they were talking about?
When I was in line for something at PAX, this dude seriously spent the entire 20 minute wait showing his friend all his apps. Each one lasted like, 30 seconds tops. that was a lot of apps.
LAWL... iPad Users are stupid and are going to love taking it up the ass. EA iPad games are $15. I think other companies are also jacking up the price on the iPad version of their games.
I have an iPhone because my office gave me one. I like it just fine, although I try not to direct any more of my dollars to the gaping Apple app-store maw than absolutely necessary. I DID buy Zenonia though, which is sort of fun, and pretty involved for a phone RPG. Reminds me of MapleStory, but top-down and single-player.
Apple + mass media + youtube = megahuge monster moron flock to fleece. Not to say that the devices aren't useful, if overpriced, but most of the people I know who have "smart" phones and ipods don't know what the fuck they're doing with most forms of technology. They'll even gossip about how they'd prefer something simpler, but that doesn't stop the flow of the peer pressure for these people (they can't think for themselves). They sure as hell are not gamers. Related: see Wii. I like cheap, tiny "stupid" phones that I can accidentally drop 10 ft a few hundred times.
There was another event at the Church of apple today And I say "mr.jobs, how many of those games arent utter crap ripoffs of other utter crap ripoffs from 20-year-old games?" You hardly get any games on the iphone that are near the quality of those on DS and PSP, and most of those are actually ports from games on those consoles (ie: GTA chinatown) Now the iAd thing, thats when the appstore will jump the shark: is not enough with all the freetards making apps with scammy ads for facebook, now they can make even more, for phones FULL of sensible data and with geo-location devices. Considering how big the zynga scam on farmville was, I can barely imagine what kind of shit users will be exposed to with the iphone's ads. After all, check what jobs said about the screening process Get big p3nis n0w!! hug3 honorable penis will awesome make partner very happy! That will really class-up the iphone's image
And thats because the appstore didnt devolve into a cesspool of shovelware and copyright infrigment, right? The boss itself said they wont check the ads, so it's going to be like adsense at best, a big bag of spam. And because free apps can now rely on that you're going to have the same situation than at FB.
I dunno why so many keep saying this. I'd go crazy if I had to use some crappy phone without Internet/GPS. I agree for the most part, but there is a lot of stuff like Sudoku games and other shovelware on both consoles that could easily be on the iPhone and cost about a tenth of the retail price of a DS/PSP game. Hell, even the basic idea behind Lumines, generally accepted as one of the best PSP games, is something that could be done on a graphic calculator, and Puzzloop has actually been sold at full price on DS!. I think you're overestimating the quality of games on those systems...
The iPhone OS 4 presentation of Game Center looked pretty cool from what I read on Gizmodo http://gizmodo.com/5512637/iphone-40s-game-center-matchmaking-leaderboards-and-achievements And this whole iAds bullshit. They really are trying to fight against Google. Steve Jobs is a n00b. Hopefully Android OS will eventually become and overcome what the iPhone has evolved to be.
