I get you point but even then, Lumines was sucessful due to the PSP's awful launch catalog, and was soon dethroned by more "regular" games.

Simple games will only go so far until everyone's bored, thats what the 83 crash was all about.

With all respect but I don't see that happening any time soon. Android is not the same league as iPhone OS. The basic difference is: Android is a Linux kernel with some basic APIs attached. Everyone can do what he likes to with it. It's similar to the approach of the old Windows Mobile. A framework that is. Nothing more nothing less. Google won't prevent anybody from releasing ugly-looking unusable applications for their platform.
The opposite is Apple. They're very keen on providing an overall good user experience. From this point of view I can even understand why they will still limit multitasking with their upcoming OS... running multiple applications in parallel CAN have a severe impact on performance and the perception of the device overall. I know what I'm talking about. I have had a first gen iPhone (back in the days imported from the US) but didn't like the restrictions imposed by apple (iTunes anyone?! Seriously, that tool heavily sucks balls and isn't even available for my preferred OS... crapware really! And I'm perfectly fine transferring UNCONVERTED music (mp3s) on a mass storage device. Don't need a music management/transfer tool for that, thank you very much). Today I am happy owner of a Palm Pre which basically does everything the iPhone does but is more open and has the best community supporting the platform (open Linux system... recently someone even got an X-Server running OpenOffice on that thingy).

That said, I still would NEVER buy games for the platform. Even though my Pre has a physical keyboard and you CAN play for example emulated gameboy games quite well it is nowhere near the comfort of playing the games with REAL game controls...

Therefore, I (as a retro gamer) am really looking forward to getting my OpenPandora. A smartphone without proper gaming controls will just NEVER do the job for me :)

Oh, btw: if the fight between apple and google furtherly escalates, I think apple will be seriously hit by google pulling the plug from its services on iPhone OS. Think about an iPhone without google maps... fun? No. I think apple can only loose this battle...

NEWS FLASH: apple is fucking devs yet AGAIN

Now that adobe (and others) are releasing packs that help you port flash apps to the iphoneOS, apple announced that they will ban all apps made with that method.

Why? to drive devs out of any competing platform, making port costs so high (essentially having to re-code the whole thing in objective-C) that they will be locked into making apps and games only for the iphone.

Obviously big companies will continue to release their stuff on any platform known to man, but small devs? they can kiss their independence goodbye

    And check this:
Considering costs for a AAA apps have long surpassed the quarter of a million, this is a fucking SCAM: you could get kick out of the app store for no reason at all since you agreed to apple's terms that they dont have to give you any explanations, and all your apps installed in users gadgets will be disabled, just to kill your userbase in case you plan to appeal to them.

Now before you ask me "dude whats your problem with the iphone?" heres why
    See the problem?

If you think the App Store is bad, you should take a look at the Android Market :) There's so much ridiculously terrible crap in there. Now, I have an Android phone and love it, especially because of the widgets and actual multitasking, but come on...

Of course, the bright side is that there are practically no limitations to what you can release on the market, unlike Apple who don't even allow alternate browsers IIRC. And most of the stuff is free too.

@Shadowlayer Apple will always fuck developers. That is one thing they need to work on in therapy.
@7Force The Android Market is totally unorganized too.

You can now grab Opera Mini on the App Store, I haven't tried it yet.

I'm really looking forward to OS 4 it looks like there's going to be some nice features available and most of the issues people have been whining about for years are finally going to be fixed. As a developer I have access to it if I want it but I can't risk installing it at the moment as I need to keep my baseband intact.

The Appstore approval process is a pain in the ass. There have been improvements over the last year and a lot more can get through than it used to thanks to the ratings system.

People complain about the lack of custom API's but keeping a close eye on the development tools creates less headaches in the security and piracy departments, yes iPhone's have been cracked and piracy is possible but it has been well controlled and is not as big an issue as one might expect.

Agreed, but so is in the appstore, even with apple's gargantuan list of requeriments, which also keeps a lot of good stuff out (see Cydia)

Yeah but after how many years? and opera is a big company making browsers for every OS and device out there.

You can bet they lobbied apple big time to get that one through

The only reason that would make me buy an iPhone is that for me it's a mobile phone phone combined with iPod (I still use my iPod Video 80 GB version). But since the price for an iPhone 4 with 32 GB is unreasonably high I will still stick with my iPod for music and I'll look for a nice mobile phone which uses Android.

As about iPhone gaming...games like bit.trip beat are pure fun but games which use virtual control are a pain in the ass.

    And speaking for iPad:

There are many fantastic games for the iPhone. Most that use virtual Joypads are shite BUT there are some companies that know how to make an arcade or console style game with touch controls that work very well. DoDonpachi on the iPhone is simply stunning. It's like a mini arcade in your hand plus it controls very well. I haven't a single complaint with it. Then there are all the original games made for a touch device. These are also very entertaining. I've wasted about 32 hours on Game Dev Lab. Basically you set up your own gaming company and make games and eventually a console.

I am a gamer, I do enjoy real games not the lime light hype titles, I am up for new ideas. To say the iPhone is not a gaming platform is crazy. It has titles that would put the DS and PSP to shame plus prices are very good. Cave shooters for 600 yen! Ridge Racer Accelerated for 600 yen, and so on. Capcom recently released an arcade collection with Street Fighter 2, Commando and Ghouls'n Ghosts for FREE! You get 3 credits a day for free or you can buy unlimited credits per game.

Now if Apple weren't such dicks we could have Bluetooth controllers so all those poor virtual pad games would be playable. As it is, only illegal emulators offer this support but at least it makes playing the emulators a better experiance.

I downloaded a bunch of games for my Iphone, Doom 1/2, Monkey Island 1/2 and so on, but I only play solitaire on a regular basis when I have five minutes over somewhere.

I just upgraded from my original 1st gen iPod Touch 32gb to a 4th gen iPod Touch 32gb with the two camera's and I absolutely love this device.

It does everything my original touch does but much better. That being said, whenever any trys to compare the iPod Touch/iPhone to a handheld such as the PSP, Gamebay, etc I just have to laugh.

I don't put a crap ton of apps on my touch, the app store is nice, though it has its problems, it gets the job done for what I do. I use about 6 apps total, and I use them all the time.

When I go on trips now, I just take my iPod Touch, I don't bother taking my Macbook Air because my Touch does everything I do on my Macbook Air.

It really just comes down to what you are going to use it for. Is it perfect no, is Apple perfect no, is Microsoft perfect no, is Sony perfect no, but depending on what you are expecting out of it, it might suit your needs perfectly it might not.

Still the idea of the iPod Touch as a game console just cracks me up and I've been an Apple user for a long. I just so glad I never tried getting into the Pippin . . .

iPod or iPhone are not game consoles at all but to sweep them aside as being no good for gaming is not right. I do find that I used the iphone mostly for the net or an incar entertainment system thanks to the jailbreak TV out option. I normally have a few movies and about 2 gb of music on it at any one time. It's great being able to watch movies on the car's screen without having to burn DVDs.

To me, the iPhone / Touch is a mobile entertainment bit of kit. It can do pretty much all you need it to do. It's just a shame Apple are such dicks for underclocking the hardare and not adding features that should be standard.

My take on the Iphone is that it's not a gaming machine in the same way a PSP/DS is but it does have great games if you want some quick fun..etc. Also with everything else it does i see it as more of an all round internet/pmp device with apps.

Also even though the PSP does play videos, music and can go on the internet like the Iphone i still only play games on mine because i do the other stuff on my phone (which i wish was an Iphone). To be honest i hate using the browser and PMP functions of the psp compared to doing the same thing on my G1 phone.

Yep. Actually there are a few players that will play many formats including MKV files. VLC is one of them. I always convert my videos to max resolution MP4 using the h264 codec. They play perfectly fine on the iphone with perfect quality. I paid for the software that converts them but it was worth it since it's very fast. In one night while asleep it will convert about 15 movies in 8 hours.

Man I cant believe this thread its still going, anyway...

The problem here isnt just apple (which never wanted to get into gaming in the first place but hey they like money so fuck principles) but the kind of people that tout the iphone/ipod as a complete console replacement, and not just PSP and DS but PS3 and X360 (go to one of their forums and see for yourself)

Of course these are the closed idiots who also think they're getting a great deal from a repackaged PC with an aluminium case at 3x the MSRP.

And thats because apple is not about power or quality anymore, but brand and that goes really well with people who likes to pretend they got more money than everybody else. After all buying an upscale german car requires actual money, but buying a $2000 laptop allows you to look rich (since most people buy $500 ones) without being actually RICH, get it?

That was the point of this thread, that the big majority of iphone/ipod users will buy anything apple or apple-related if it gets them any attention from their peers

I'll agree with that statement. While there are users that do this, I wouldn't even say its the majority though I might be wrong. I'm a Apple user, and I love their products, but outside of video games, Video is a major hobby of mine, and the hardware and software I have the Mac make doing anything video related just a breeze.

Yeah I have a touch, but I use it a laptop replacement when I go on trips, not to show off to people that I'm hip of something stupid like that. If I could find something else that integrated with my existing systems as easily, and worked better I would use it.

iPhone=shiny white opiate for the masses. The iPhone did one thing and only one thing well: it brought forth demand for quality smartphone OSes and hardware that didn't suck. Meanwhile Apple has the iPhone under stricter control than any NDA I've ever signed and mocks their competitors instead of owning up to antennae problems with the iPhone 4.

Meanwhile on the Galaxy S line of phones:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmFiwgZzJ70
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HExoMKXVqP4

And you don't have to worry about needing to jailbreak it so you can play them either. Though I'd imagine Quake 3 eats battery life like none other. Call me a fanboy if you must, but I simply don't like authoritarian regimes telling me what I can and cannot do with what I have purchased. Same goes for Microsoft and Nintendo.
