Is it just that I'm playing it 11 years later or....

I was unimpressed by FF7 from the first time I touched it .

Back in the day, I had a Nintendo 64 with Mario running around beautiful levels.

Taking my eyes from Mario to Cloud was like taking a step backwards.

    - I wasn't a big RPG fan, that's true enough but I didn't find the characters interesting really (too much drama for a bunch of pretty boys)

    - The graphics were ass compared to my trusty old N64

    - FMV videos dont count as gameplay graphics

    - I found the gameplay slow and boring (reason why I never finished any of the Fire Emblems on the NES and SNES)

Please keep in mind that prior to that I had played and actually liked games such as Chrono Trigger.

FFVII was going to be my sole reason to get a PS1. Prior to that I had been a huge Square fanboy and had been playing through FFIV, FFVI, Secret of mana, and Chrono Trigger almost constantly up until FFVII's release.

And to me, at that time, FFVII was an abomination, and wasn't just a giant step back from the greatness of FFVI, but was an entire LEAP from the very league in which FFVI and FFIV were.

I actually played through the game years later on the PC, and even then I found it to be quite mediocre. I never understood how anyone that had played FFVI could appreciate ANYTHING done in FFVII. It was like they took FFVI's story, butchered it, and then took out the great characters and replaced them with dorks taken out of a high school anime nerd's fan fiction or something.

See, to me, FF6 just wasnt interesting enough to play at the time. Granted, thatd be when I was..11 or so when I tried FF6. But still, I was only a bit older for 7, and the quick start, and the environment was just more interesting. I still dont see FF7 as being the best game ever, but it still had a profound impact on my gaming years following it.

I liked FF7 as a game back when I first played it. Must've been the environments, I guess. and the fact that it was somewhat Sci-Fi.

But even back then I knew the world polygons used by the characters were god awful. I never really cared for Sephiroth to be honest. The whole time I played FF7 I thought he had the cheesiest reason for being evil. Because he turned emo when he found out he was an Alien spawn and wanted to destroy the world or some crap.

He didn't have the charisma and character that Kefka did, he just did hand gestures and said gloomy and ominous stuff. Kinda boring and pretentious if you ask me.

Other than that though, I guess I liked the entire "World" and the other characters. As for the main characters though...the one with probably the most actual depth was probably Cid.

I agree about the Sephiroth thing. I never saw him as the main threat in the game really.

    1997.

3d graphics, 3d environment, explore at your own will.
top of the top graphics in PSX RPGs. don't you forget that.
great OST, which combines the best, a storyline which
has elements of zen buddhism, society and social
questions, 100 hours to play, dramatic scenes,

it is still one of the besr rpgs ever made.
    90 % fun +

FFVII is the opposite of rpgs today, which are more
    style than substance.

    press X

i think that FFVII was the first "FMV driven" rpg. plenty of people were skipping story just to rush to the next "wonderful" video.... -_-

also sephiroth's myth is just because of that FMV with him disapearing in the flames... kefka can easily do better and is just a sprite :D

I still find it a pile of dogs droppings gentlely heated and covered with a light puke topping and a handful of flies.

I can understand it being a deep game with a long and meaningful story plot, I can understand that geeks cried when that brown haired bint got killed and I can understand it rates really highly even now amongst rpg fans but I still rather stab myself in the nuts with a sharp knife whilst juggling burning copies of SqaureEnix press releases then spend more then 2 minutes playing the game.

"Dear SqaureEnix can we have permission to show your game? Yes? Good, now wheres the Debug PS2 and a CD-R...", what sort of idiots pay $80 for a game that was one of the best selling RPGs ever and isn't that hard to find... I passed up several copies at $10... [/rant]

    Collectors like me do.

I have a feeling FF X might be the next VII too. I'm not that crazy about X either.

Xenogears still holds up at least in my mind it does. It's been years since I played it. But the story is soooooooooo good. Characters, setting music everything about Xenogears is perfect.

Chrono Trigger. Right from the outset it tugs on your heart strings. I didn't get far thanks to emulator bugs (You need some macro to proceed past a cirtian point I hear)

The High point of both is that Yoshinori Mitsuda did music for both games who I think is much better than Nobuo.

I don't know too too much about FF 6 I know who Kefka is becuase somebody thinks Jansen from Lost Oddessy looks like Kefka without the make up. And I've seen alot of "fan art" of Terra (wink wink)

As for Final Fantasy VII fanboyism. Look no farther than these losers

    UGH

oh and for the record. I paid $80 for Einhander too only to find out the Japanese version is more common cheaper and superior.

I rented FF7 when it first came out, and it kept freezing up.

Then Parasite Eve and Xenogears followed, and I think both of them kicked FF7's ass. The only FF's I really like is 6 and 8. I loved 8 even if some of the charectars annoyed mem but also because I played it a lot as a kid.

I tried to play though 7 a few years ago, and my game kept glitching out and wouldn't let me equip materias. My GF beat it, and said it was fun but not anything to obsess over. It always seemed to me the biggest FF7 and Sephiroth fans hadn't actually played the game. I like the music, though.

    It's not worth $80. Maybe $75 at most... ;-)

I will go on record saying that I loved FFX, didn't love the Saturday afternoon teen romance TV angle between Tidus and Yuna, but the rest of the story was brilliant, the FMV was (and still is) second to none, the music, incredible, and the gameplay brilliant. I love FFX, it deserves more praise than it gets, most of the problems people have with it is the soppy shit between the two main characters.

The main reason that I really don't like FFX as much as others is that it spawned FFX-2.

The best thing about FF X is Lulu.......HOTTEST RPG GIRL EVER....and X-2 Ruins that when she's pregnant by a Douche.

So we'll just retcon X-2 out of existance as fans.

I have the PC version and already tried to play it twice, but lost interest. Where can I get the fixes/mods for XP?

I never saw anything special about the series. I was never a fan of RPGs though.

Is Pokemon considered an RPG? If so, then those are the only RPGs I've ever enjoyed (original Red & Blue versions).
