Is it just that I'm playing it 11 years later or....

I still need to play FF12. I might be an oldbie, but some of my favorite FF games were FF1 and FF5. Was never really that crazy about FF4. FF6 has the best story, imo, but as an actual game I don't think I had as much fun. Its hard being imaginative when you know what each character looks like, you know? At least the older games let you use your imagination a bit more on some aspects, especially with FF1 and the Job system. Speaking of which, I haven't played FF3 yet either. I also like the Tactics games because I like creating my own characters.

I just bought FF1 and I have FF8. I haven't played either one. I'm going to try and start playing it as soon as I quit my second job. It's driving me insane.

It had cut scenes.. I sort of chuckled then and now as I played my YS games on duo.

I guess past a few sega cd games, there hadn't been many games like that in the U.S. or europe. Of course if you owned a duo, you had a huge range of games before FF7

I kinda think some game companies missed out on loads of money by not releasing some games over here sooner (Or at all!!)

Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean 1 come to mind.

I too found FFVII to be overrated. Once I got past the Golden Saucer, I became bored with the game. I loved FFI, FFIV, FFV and FFVI. But when VII came out, by love for the series went away. I have yet to play FFVIII-FFXII.

My opinion here, but I think the reason the first is regarded so highly was that it was the first RPG for many. (Thanks, marketing!)

While all my cool friends had Playstations I had a PC. While they beat the game I waited for the PC version. In preparation I bought a Intergraph Voodoo Rush w/ 6mb video memory for about $100. Didn't work with FFVII PC worth shite. Six months later they release a special "FFVII PC Driver" for the card. Looking back I can't fathom how I put up with the shoddy performance, intermittent sound, and worthless FMV stuttering.

My PC performance issues aside, the game has not aged well.

    It's just you.

11 years too late. You shouldn't be surprised that it has dated. All RPGs have. At the time is was magnificent. These days we have been spoiled and it looks dated. Still a good game, but not as epic as it appeared when it was launched. 4 discs back then was a big deal for a game that wasn't all FMV.

Still, the only thing that pushed FF7 to 3 disks was the FMVs Im pretty sure. At least on the PC version, everything is interchangeable data wise, except for the movies ;)

    Oh really?

True, but some RPGs age better than others. The models used in the overworld and in towns were a joke. Even back before "Good" graphics I always wondered why the overworld models looked shitty. ESPECIALLY considering that battle models looked even better than the ones used in Metal Gear Solid, imo.

Wasn't FF7's amount of CD's made to hold the amount of FMVs the game had? I bet 95% of the last CD was all FMV.

What I meant with the FMV comment was that large numbers of discs prior to FF7 were games like Wing Commander 4 *urgh*.

I read that the polygon models used were so low in polygons because at some points they run over the top of FMV and for it to work well it required that limitation. I guess they fixed that for future PS1 FF releases though.

I've heard that the low polygon models were "Left over" from the N64 version. Can't remember where I read that, it might have been here.

There never was an N64 version though, not even prototyped. After all the work that went into the PS1 version it doesn't make sense to use a few models like that.

    a) no such thing as N64 FF as we ve said countless times before and..

b)using sprites as polys? I thought everyone was educated enough around here :p Unless the sentence meant using the same characters in polygonal form instead of sprites, which isn't obvious from the way its written.

Well its not an N64 demo, but countless people thought it was. Its more of a PC demo, but whatever. It doesn't really help that gaming magazines added fuel to the fire and some people don't know the whole story.

Funnily enough, the Golem in the demo looks like FF7s character models somewhat. One more thing I might add. Square could have probably revived this project and made it for Wii. It looks like a Gamecube or Wii title, and it supposedly used a control scheme that could probably work with the Wiimote pretty well.

I watched some summons from FF7 on Youtube the other day. To be honest I think the monster models (Like all Bahamuts) looked impressive then and now STILL. The battle graphics have aged somewhat gracefully, imho.
