Well, if you had to get a new regular genesis, this'd be the best way. It using real parts means there should be 100 percent compatibility or so. But man, they should have had hdmi and a console redesign. That genesis would look ugly next to a stylish hd tv.
The quality looks poor: Still, I'll be waiting for a teardown/disassembly video on youtube. You never know, the retail product might actually be not that bad. But it's not using real parts: "Processors (integrated into a single chip):"
"An HDMI out would make it too expensive...." on the interview press release. The excuse for not actually developing anything and then use an AtGames quality hardware on something with a case close to the original product. And finally, ask premium price for it. Just go away Tectoy.
Man, what a load of crap. We should have known better. I mean, composite video? WTF? And here I was with the money ready to send over to Brazil. Not any more may as well use a real console with an EverDrive. At least that way we can have RGB and real hardware.
Well. It should be for kids I suppose. Like the Mega Drive 4 with guitar... Obviously some rebranded chinese solution available today at your favorite importer. They manufactured the original shell though, and also I like how they are using the old logo lol. And of course I'll buy some controllers. We know we don't have such opportunities of brand new controllers often.
Everyone had hoped for HDMI, but it didn't. The price would go up, costs are high here in Brazil and we are in crisis. Tectoy did what he could. For those who are thinking that it's a trash hardware, you're wrong. It would be impossible to manufacture a console with all the hardware and software compatibility without releasing it to a stratospheric price. I created a topic with information on the release and I will bring some information here. I hadn't seen this thread before and probably posted in the wrong place. http://assemblergames.com/l/threads/great-news-mega-drive-genesis-rereleased.64003/ (Vote in the poll) Lately we see in matter of reissues (including own Tectoy and your Master System and the latest versions of Mega Drive) of old consoles, a new design and different hardware with bad emulation. So, the big expectation has been created with several announcements of Tectoy in your Facebook and Twitter in latest days, at the same time added to the fear of being more a product of lower quality. The day of the official announcement was today a few hours ago, so I was finally able to know the as would be. Here's says in official announcement. "The classic is back in a limited edition. For the first time in Brazil a video game is rereleased taking requests and doing the happiness of thousands of fans. The video game is complete, with its classic design, original three-button joystick, compatible with original cartridges *, entrance to SD Card and unforgettable 22 games. ** If you like and is a fan of video game, can't to leave participate in this historic moment and get yours." * Some cartridges may not be compatible ** Tectoy reserves the right to add, delete, change titles, names and accessories without prior notice. R=> Don't. Because the main Mega Drive original components are no longer manufactured. 2) Mega Drive components are equal to the original? R=> No, because the originals are no longer manufactured. 3) The Mega Drive is an emulator? Renders the games with similar components to the original console or wheel games via emulation. R=> The Mega Drive is not an emulator. The unit has a circuit that incorporates similar components to the original product, since the original integrated circuits are no longer manufactured. 4) In this Mega Drive work all cartridges? R=> The Mega Drive work most of the original console cartridges. Some cartridges may not function because of the differences in relation to the original hardware and software. 5) The Tectoy will relaunch for the Mega Drive cartridges? R=> So far there don't exist a definition. Tectoy would like to launch cartridges, but to do so it is necessary to negotiate licenses, a complex issue when it comes to games and brands created decades ago. 6) Can enter more games on the micro SD card? R=> The games inserted in the SD card, supplied together with the Mega Drive, have been duly tested by Tectoy regarding their compatibility as hardware as well as all the necessary permits have been obtained for its marketing. Technically it is possible to add content to this card, being, however, the responsibility of the consumer to the compatibility tests as well as the necessary licenses. 7) You can save the games? R=> Don't. You can only save the game if the used cartridge has this function. 8) Why the Mega Drive don't has HDMI? R=> The vast majority of TVs for sale in the Brazilian market has composite video input (RCA), compatible with the output of the Mega Drive. Add the HDMI output to the console would bring the final price of the product to the consumer without the increase of the original resolution. 9) Comes with how many controls? You can buy additional controls? R=> The product includes a joystick with 3 (three) buttons in the original size. You can buy extras joysticks through the official website. 10) Can I use joysticks of the Mega Drive. R=> The resolution is the same as the original, i.e. 320 x 240 pixels. 15) The new Mega Drive is able to output in standard RGB video with the correct cables, as the original Mega Drive was natively using a SCART cable? R=> Don't. 16) Can I use any headphone? R=> Yes. 17) The audio output is stereo or mono? R=> Stereo. 18) Many emulated solutions have problems to accurately reproduce the sounds of the Mega Drive original. As the new console you want to play the audio from the original console? R=> The Mega Drive plays audio through similar components, so the result will not be 100% identical to the original. 19) The Mega Drive is bivolt? R=> Yes. The product has internal power supply 110/220 volts. 20) Which the warranty period? R=> The Mega Drive has warranty of 90 days from the date of purchase Invoice. 21) The Mega Drive runs a special chip games like Virtua Racing and Sonic & Knuckles? R=> No. 22) As is the packaging? R=> The package will be based on the original with a few changes, such as replacing styrofoam shim for an ecologically recommended solution. The value of the device is of R$ 399,00, approximately $ 125,00. (With option for free shipping in Brazil) The pre-sale is for a limited time. All requests made during this period will be delivered from June 2017. (A great time to wait, but I understand that they don't want to risk.) I'd also like to get the "Perfect Mega Drive" with compatibility with all accessories and games, HDMI output, etc. but would come out very expensive final product. At least won't be emulation, which guarantees (or almost) the game run as the original. Despite the losses, the attractions of buying this console are: 1. New product in the box, with all the manuals and smell of a new product 2. Product with warranty (advantage for people who live in Brazil) 3. Feel the nostalgia and perhaps fulfill a dream of opening a Mega Drive in the box and be the first to use it. 4. Have the ability to download and play through almost SD card any game from the library of the Mega Drive. 5. A great new item for collectors. 6. Buy and save for sell in 10 years for 10x more the value. They have released a new video: He says: Seeeeegaaaaaaaaaaaaaa He's back The most popular video game console of 90's Games in the memory Original design Slot for cartridges Classic joystick Guarantee your Limited Edition I hope it works out and that sells well, maybe she does fabricate in the future a more expensive version with everything fans wanted it and we missed in this model.
Hm, so it's gonna sound like this... ...meaning an emulator of sorts would've actually been the better solution, quality-wise (the whole thing about properly licensing an emulator aside). Of course, Mega CD, 32X and co. wouldn't work that way, either. But hey, their target market probably isn't people who want the best possible experience playing these games, but those with simple nostalgia for them, so...
Read my previous post. As for Tectoy itself, they have been under a "crisis" over a decade, even their stocks became junk. Just look at their balance sheets: http://institucional.tectoy.com.br/investidores.aspx The only reason they are still alive is because of the brazilian government protectionism and that they started using their plant to manufacture other companies products, like the deal with Humax to produce set-top boxes for pay tv systems.
According to specifications, although not the original hardware is not emulation, so we can expect a great improvement compared to the version AtGames. Thanks for the detailed information. I knew the Tectoy was in a tough situation, but not in that way. I hope this new Mega Drive enhance your sales.
So to make matters worse looks like its also going to be PAL-M only . Dang Tectoy! more of the same hopefully not worst I wonder how many victims are going to fall for this : http://www.ebay.com/itm/PRE-ORDER-N...N-/172393634159?&_trksid=p2056016.m2516.l5255
I'm sorry but I can buy something just the same (different console shell) on AliExpress for 30 USD. I could buy 4 for the price of this MD. No, this is just cheap junk. Not compatible with all games. Will not have the correct sound. Bloody shitty composite video (HDMI would have cost them 5 USD to add) they sure have enough profit margin on this to add that as a gesture of gratitude for buying the console. Raise the price substantially. Do they think we are all stupid. Seriously, these units are probably made for under 20 dollars each. That's over 100 dollars profit on each unit sold.
hahahahahaha Wise guy... Had forgotten about the Brazil's strange Pal-M standard. Another negative point. Don't be fooled, don't underestimate the Brazilian Government. If you count all the taxes and taxation from a production line, raw material, rights, etc. have more than 50% of the final value in taxes. Tectoy has developed a new hardware that was as close as possible to the original and this may have generated a high cost. Wouldn't be so cheap put HDMI, none technology is cheap here in Brazil, not even dead technology. Unfortunately this is our reality. Let's hope the new console runs the games perfectly in cartridge and SD card, and have a good acceptance of critics and consumers. Maybe Sega see and releases a 100% compatible model as all desire.
It's probably the exact same junk from AliExpress, with a different shell and with the high taxes and big profit margin for Tectoy included. For comparison, this is the Master System "Evolution" they still sell for around 200 Reais ( aprox. 63 dollars - yes, more expensive than the NES Mini). Look at the "high qualitty" construction. I really doubt this new MegaDrive will be any differnet. Picture from MSXresources: https://msxresources.wordpress.com/2012/02/04/do-outro-lado-da-cerca-sega-mark-iiimaster-system/ People in Brazil tend to remember Tectoy fondly, but they're not the same company they were during the late 80's and the 90's. I wish they were. Without Sega, the company lost it's way. They tried changing direction by selling cheap dvd and blu-ray players, karaokes, eletronic babysitters, tablets, the zeeboo,... everything failed, probably because it was just rebranded crap. People get surprised that Tectoy have been releasing Master Systems and Mega Drives for their whole life, but it's probably the only products that keep the company alive and relevant.
The specs make me suspect it's based on Genesis 3 somewhat. About as original hardware as we can hope for.
Time for Sega to find someone that can manufacture something that will allow them to cash in on the NES mini fever, maybe Nintendo could do it?
