Products like this only hurt the Sega brand and Genesis product line. I would rather have there be no clones than cheap inferior products put out. When does the heartbreak end if your a Sega fan?
After discussing with a few friends we ended up with the same conclusion: this is so bad that it's not targeting any market at all. No HDMI, kills the deal for someone wanting a better option for graphics. PAL-M, kills the deal for almost everybody. I have a bunch of CRTs here that are NTSC only. Even if you consider hooking up to a plasma/lcd tv it still would not work. None of the flat screen tvs I had ever had PAL-M. 3 button controller, kills the deal for 6 button games like Street Fighter. The price isn't affordable. So, who is this for? I can only see this aiming for collectors and the ones that care for completeness of a Sega collection. The same one that would import that toilet Sega game. Retro gamers would grab a real Genesis and an Everdrive. People who want an affordable solution would not get this. Anyone that wants a consolized hardware to play retrogames can get a Pi with some emulators. This is just terrible. In comparison: the NeoGeoX At least had Final Burn Alpha inside and could be hacked for other purposes.

This Tectoy unit just gets worse and worse. So in other words it's no different than the millions of clone systems available from the East. Who cares if it's not emulation. It's not perfect just like the System on a chip clones. No difference apart from the whopping big price tag.
Would be interested in seeing a teardown, but I suspect it is going to be a giant shell of plastic with a tiny SOC like so many of the current unlicensed clones. Who knows, maybe it might be decent like the Genesis 3 and give some hope of restoring the lost functionality of 32x and SMS games.
The link I posted already says those won't work. http://www.smspower.org/forums/16371-TectoyRisingFromItsGrave#95032 The oficial FAQ has a lot of disappointing info: - Sound is confirmed to not be 100% accurate; - Some cartridges don't work; - Accessories (Game Genie, Sega CD, Power Base Converter, 32X, Meganet, Activator, Mega Mouse) don't work; - Only composite video, no RGB or HDMI; Some of the accessories not working, such as the Game Genie, the Activator or the Mouse, sounds really fishy... What is it about a Sega-on-a-chip that would prevent these from working? To me personally, the lack of HDMI is a deal breaker. I already own a number of functioning MD/Genesis consoles, but the composite signal looks atrocious on my HDTV, so that would actually be THE reason to get an HDMI MD. Sadly, there's nothing this console offers that I don't already have. As for the power supply, it's very common for electronics in Brazil to have them built into the devices themselves, so the power cord isn't detachable. This was in fact brought up in an interview, how Tec Toy wanted to do this and SEGA refused, claiming that there could be heating issues and such, but Tec Toy did it anyway, without official approval. And how SEGA later ended up "stealing" the idea for the Saturn, IIRC.
TecToy is studying to sell the 6 button joystick as well: http://jogos.uol.com.br/ultimas-not...e-6-botoes-para-novo-mega-drive-no-brasil.htm
Haven't these been in production in Brazil for a hot minute? Brazil is located in an alternative gaming universe where Sega won and continued to succeed.
You are giving too much credit for both Sega and Tectoy. Tectoy only cares to make Master Systems and Mega Drives because they never succeed doing anything else after those. And somehow, people still bough their crap for years. Doing this in a country that has insane taxes on videogames helped them stay in the market. They would be long dead if this wasn't the case. And Sega receives their money for licensing whatever crap Tectoy releases, that's all. It's funny you're asking that. The Sega Saturn was released in Brazil a week earlier than in the USA.

TecToy posted a news today with the main engineer of the new Mega Drive. He said they are also trying to launch the cartridges again. http://blogtectoy.com.br/entrevista-com-heriberto-martinez-gerente-de-engenharia-da-tectoy/
I guess the negative feedback they were getting must be a bit exaggerated. Good for brazil I guess. You could always put the games on a sd card too.
They will release a video to show new Mega Drive working to stop the bad rumors and they are also trying to get the licenses to relaunch the cartridges. Let's see the next episodes XD
