Ridge Racer / Ridge Racer Revolution are classic and historic ones. Rage Racer never got me, even trying to playing it several times. Type 4 is the best on the series and one of the best games of the PS1.

I'm probably alone on this, but i liked RR V for PS2. It's graphics aren't that good, but i play it from time to time. Maybe it's because it reminds me the original so much.

R: Racing Evolution was a failure, although introduced some cool ideas later used on Toca Race Driver. Never played Rave Racer (never saw it on arcades). Also never played RR6 and RR7 felt so bland.

Namco could just make a Type4 remake and i bet it would be a hit. Or just put the original one avaiable at the PlayStation Store.

R: Racing Evolution was indeed a terrible game. No sense of speed and very little content: only a few tracks and a really short story mode. The story mode was a good idea in theory, but you could complete it in a day and story itself was really stupid. Another good idea was the way you could pressure AI drivers into making mistakes, but the execution was bad: when the pressure meter was full, they'd just drive off track automatically. It also contributed into making the game easy. Actually, the best thing about the whole game was that it came with Pac-Man Vs., a much more fun game.

Was RR6 the one that was on 360? I also had that one and found it pretty meh...but I did enjoy RR on PSP.

Thats almost the other end of the spectrum. I am proposing to give it a little more realistic handling to give its spectaculair 'i'm there' feeling back.
You just can't reach that anymore with 60fps arcade like graphics, people are already used to these properties and something needs to be added.

It should still have the fast, arcade like graphics and the relative simple handling, power slides etc. But also some added graphical realism like suspension, damages, etc

The game should be fast, furious, handle like a modern game and look like a game of the future.

Know what's funny? Ridge Racer (Ps1) is still not on PSN in any region. Namco release a small handful of ps1 games at the start of the ps1 service then never released anything again. It makes no sense.

Some of the tracks you have to pay to unlock though. I know the game is cheap, but I hate that you have to buy more courses.

Johnny, you should give Rage Racer another chance. Once you get past the first few 'tiers' of races, the faster ones come and it feels a lot more like RR again. At first when I played it, I was pretty downhearted, but it really does get a lot better once you buy new cars etc.

I actually bought that CD from a little Anime shop in Albuquerque. It turned out to be a bootleg, which kinda pissed me off. Anyway, at least the sound quality was pretty good.

Also, I thought the original PSP Ridge Racer game was pretty good. Not a lot of skill involved, but good, fast, arcade fun. It looked pretty good for a handheld game at the time. It also had a really good presentation for a game - all of the menus and options and stuff were very stylish. The music, of course, was very nice. On the other hand, I haven't played the earlier games that much so maybe it sucks by comparison.

I also have Ridge Racer 6 for 360, and I didn't like it very much because it seemed like a half-assed port of the PSP game.

Now that you mention the PSP Ridge Racer... I take back what I said earlier. I got that game release day of the PSP and it was pretty sweet. + The music was damn good as far as I can remember! I gotta hear it again! ;-) Time for some youtube.

It's beginning to dawn on me that there's a lot of notable, well-know series's of games that I have never experienced. lol. I was reading the Devil May Cry thread and thought to myself, "Wow, I've never played a DMC game." And then I come here and I'm like, "Wow, I've never played a RR game." I'd name several more but it's too embarrassing!

    That's shameful, at least.

No Ridge Racer, Ridge Racer Revolution and Ridge Racer Type 4.

Other inexplicable missing titles: Wipeout XL, Wipeout 3, Tekken, Tekken 3, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Colony Wars, Colony Wars: Vengeance,Colony Wars: Red Sun, Destruction Derby 2, Destruction Derby Raw, Twisted Metal, Battle Arena Toshinden, Battle Arena Toshinden 2, Ace Combat, Ace Combat 2, Ace Combat 3, Tomba, Tomba 2, ... and the list goes on and on. Plus some games are only avaiable at the Japanese Store:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PSOne_Classics

I'll try it again someday. Anyway, the game always seemed to lack something. Plus the constant going uphill and downhill tracks were annoying. Type 4 is so good, that most people even forgot about Rage Racer. But thanks for the heads up.

I kinda want to get Ridge Racer Type 4 now. I read that it included a bonus disc with an updated version of Ridge Racer called Ridge Racer Turbo. Did all regions get that?

My PAL version came with a "ridge racer hi-spec demo" (SCED-01832)

It's never too late to get into the series. I highly recommend finding a copy of R4. It's not hard to track down and is well worth playing.

Another option for something more modern is Ridge Racer for PSP, Ridge Racer 6 or Ridge Racer 7. I more recommend 7 over 6 as 7 is more of an update/upgrade of 6.

No you're not. It was awesome! And I even think its graphic was awesome. Still one of the best PS2 games.

It was Ridge Racer 1 in full 60fps and no flickers & proper textures. It was very close to the arcade RR, altough it only featured one rival car.

I must admit, I skipped over RRV since I didn't have a ps2 at launch. I have a hard time getting a handle on it. Not sure why. I'm fine with all the others.

I do at least have it in my ps2 collection (took me a while to hunt one down) along with R: Racing Evo (even though it's so-so).

I loved RRV, never played any of the ps1 RR. I really enjoy both Ridge Racers on the PSP. I have both on the PS3 & 360...I rated the PS3 one better.

    I couldn't get into the N64's RR64, I think I'll have to give i another go though.

I just saw that they're putting a 3D title on the 3DS. It looked pretty terrible. Did not make my day.

YES! RR:psp was an awesome game.

What I played of RR7 wasn't so bad either.

Haven't played V or VI though.
