Only buy it if you can thoroughly test it first. If the mirrors are out of alignment (very common) then it is not worth much. Also I assume it has the kick stand and foam visor? Is it boxed?
I'm debating if buying a jap Virtual Boy CIB myself. It has very few games and of course they are all launch games (that never reached the full potential of the system) but a couple of them seem decent to good (VB Warioland, Red Alert, Teleroboxer, Space Squash). Also it is a quite strange VG piece. under $50 for a working unit, stand and controller? I'm seeing higher prices actually. Doesn't help I live in Europe and here it's much rarer than in North America or Japan.
I have JPN one CIB and been thinking lately the way to display it as the deco. ^ ^ will need to set it up properly with outer Acrylic case to prevent any accidental touch... still can't think of any stand arrangement that will suit the VB.... hmm....
Boof, $150? I have one at the local gamestore that I intend to buy next week for $75. It's in the original box, with the stand and all of the pieces (I think Mario Tennis is in it), and the gamestore it's at is well known for only buying items that work thoroughly. I'm excited. I definitely think this one is worth it. Just not the one the OP found.
The Virtual Boy is worthwhile as more of a display piece/piece of infamous Nintendo history. There's not many games on it, though Wario Land is very good.
A lot of the hobby shops around my area are constantly selling CIB VB systems for around $200. I'm surprised that the demand is actually still there to keep the price somewhat constant. All I know is, it makes me glad that I still have my launch VB CIB. It has found its permanent home right next to my launch Nintendo 64 on my shelf.
To be honest, the $150 in store is not totally unrealistic. A quick look at ebay shows a few Virtual Boys at about $150 but they include more than one game. Now in store means not having to wait for shipping, you have it immediately etc. So if you really want one and its right in front of you, its not too bad of an amount to spend. Most likely the store used ebay to determine its value. Plus your saving on shipping. Its true you can go hunting for one thats much cheaper, in fact those that are finding them below $70 in store are very lucky, but sometimes if you really want a nice collectible and don't mind paying the extra amount its worth it. If nintendo would release the virtual boy games on the 3DS store then the value would go downhill I think.
Ha ha ha ! I wish to... instead of the x2 price for a half missing parts. Even just the rarity x time passing by should make stand the price up. And on the original question: does it worth it ? I answer yes, at least one time to try and feel that strange beast... and more at 75$ CIB on your local shop ^^
