The PSX officially died in 2000, when the PS2 was released. Yeh some developers still made games for it but it was lesser known ones, and the big developers flocked to the PS2. The PSX basically had a good lifespan of 5 years, which is good considering how graphics advanced since it came out and it was still outselling other consoles.

As for the PS2, it looks like the PS3 might come out mid 2006, so it had the same lifespan that the PSX had. I really doubt the PS3 might last that long due to consumer demand, unless Sony really had control of the market, thank god it doesn't.

 

I haven't seen a TecToy Saturn or DC on retail for quite some time. But the Master System and the Mega Drive are very commom.

They come with tons of game on internal memory, but i think they are too expensive

 

yea the tectoys are quite expensive considering you can pick up a used megadrive/sms for little.......
i remember majesco making the genisis 3,......they also were doin gg's, and apparently saturns were up for the first half of '99.........are the genisis still in production and is it the same company who published advent rising, i also seen that they went under the name of Majetco...maybe that was a typo

 

Kutaragi can keeth my deek, if he thinks i am paying more for his 6 usb slots, br drive and all the rest of it. I am going to go for the Xbox 360 and Revolution until Sony can start to talk some sense on PS3, the machine needs an HDD too, and I am not buying a seperate sony 80 gig model cause a 20 to 40 gig free one is not big enough for his cell.

 

I personally think Sony are about to fuck up big time. Yeah the machine is a power house plus packed with the latest tec' but at a price that no normal gamer can afford. They say it will last ten years. now while that sounds good think carefully and ask yourself this question. "Will the average Joe who made Sony what it is today give two shits about his console lasting 10 years (after buying a million replacement parts ) ?" The answer is NO. The average gamer made Sony what it is today in the games industry. They want a cheap or at most a slightly expensive thrill. They don't want cutting edge technology that will still be powerful in 10 years time. They just want eye candy that's all. Blue Ray discs? Half of these idiots can't tell you what the difference between a CD and DVD is !

Yep, Sony never learned a thing with the second PSX (That Hard Drive thing with PS2 built in) which I think was a testing ground for the PS3 to see how the public took to an all in one entertainment box.

i agree with you, if its even past $400 it wont even go too far, cause i know sony is still losing to the ds do to libary of games but most importantly price. Alot of people here in the U.S. arent picking one up due to its price, i mean after tax its probably anywhere from $263-277(just throwing numbers as i got mine for 20% discount and sales tax varies state to state). Still it would not suprise me that microsoft is getting the support it is as ive stated that developers are getting fed up with sony in a sense. I know that for sure clover studio ment for its games to be cube exclusive and didnt consider ps2 as they perfered cube, but had to axe the deal to market. Only reason why there are so many developers making games for ps2 is thats whats selling and its the cheapest to produced for despite its limitation and difficulty devloping games. its the same with the ds, theres more titles on the ds as its more popular and cheaper to produce games for. Psp i can imagien is quite pricey to make games for since it requires much more complexe programing as well as requireing a decently size team to make games for. And to be honest with you i only use mine for emus, i dont really plan on buying any of the new games and right now its mostly just games that are ports of ps2 games though stripped down and made for more portable style, i mean the only good orignal title that not a port of another game, is probably lumies, though i havent played it. Meanwhile for racers i thought ridge racer was a good launch title, but you can only do so much in the game and the replay value to unlock stuff is tedious. But man if sony loses this generation, i can only imagine how the market will change. And belive me it means something if sony expects this to last 10 years, will it be able to be like the walkman or the cd player, or the mini disc where its one of sonys mutimedia products, cause i mean look at the ps2 and ps1, they rarely publish ro make their own games for that matter. I mean why else would they depend on 3rd parties for their revenue, its similar to how any multimedia player is, its manufactured by various companies or one company, yet all movies and music is publshed by people who are not makign hardware, just the media content for these devices. If anything sony has and is been treating tis consoles as multimedia in some ways. I mean all thats been talked about is a couple of demos here and there and most just how many ports it has and what media it accepts. Just like the psp the focus on games themselves is not made apparernt. I mean microsfot is actually doing that compared to sonys whole entertainment thing. As for nintendo, will just have to see.

Anyways, the PSP is goin to win, basically becos of the mainstream point of view about the playstation brand. The PS2 had the same start: everyone went like crazy to a store, then a slowdown came becos of the lack of good games (even the DC started to sell more) then in mid 2001 GTA3 came out and the madness begun, again.

Almost 70% of the PS2s in the world own it existance to the GTA series, if not, sony wont had sell shit. You may say "ppl buy madden and other games too" yea, but the whole reason to buy the machine WAS GTA, if they buy another game later is just a counter effect. Its like the Genesis, everybody bought it for Sonic, and then they went and buy other games like MK, SF, VR, etc......

Rockstar already announced GTA:LC (wich its, in my opinion, a port of GTA3) for the PSP the next year. Now the DS would be the perfect console for a GTA due to the touchscreen it has (it would be like the mouse in the PC versions of GTA) but nintendo in their hype arrngancy put all the bets in the dualscreen concept, instead of giving the console a little more power. Now you cant do GTA in the DS simply becos it cant run it, it lacks the proper processing power :angry. Theres the chance that cuz the DS runs on cartridges a power-hungry game could come with a GPU inside, but just think on the price that game is goin to have with such add.

When GTA for PSP hit the streets its goin to be the DS armaggedon.

For the OTHER generation (the one thats goin to come after the next) i see a world where M$ rule the home console market (after the bigass flop of the PS3) like sony does today with the PS2. Sony on the other hand has defeated nintendo and its now the king of the portable market, and planing to release a PSP with an HD to get the iPod share of the market.

The market its completely casual gamer oriented, and nintendo and SEGA are goin fine releasing games for the "old school" gamers in japan. Panasonic and samsung are planing to release a console to compete in the market, and no, its not the M2 :-D

 

In my country people bought it for FFX, gran turismo, tekken tag and the winning eleven series at first. the idiotic mass come later.

by the way i don't believe ps3 will be a flop. ps1 and ps2 won because of the game park, not power (see ps2 vs xbox). sony gives players what they like to play. we'll see if microsoft will do the same

i think the ds will win personally, zelda and square enix games will come, you know?

the psp as the cool factor in the public eyes, but the only games so far are toned down ps2 games...

there are more fucking movies then games for the psp. It drives me nuts i want to play games not watch movies.(even tho i like to do so via 1gig memory stick) But i want a game that is fun and new not remakes. The 200x's is the age of new discoveries not remake shit from the 80's and 90's.

DC and Xbox have a much bigger ratio of good gamesVSbad one than the PS2, but its the PS brand and a crack game like GTA the factors that determinate the overall popularity of the product in the market

by the way, in italy nintendo is still waiting to sell the first DS after months that is out...

 

I think you guys are forgetting something - most people bought the PS2 in the early years because it was also a cheap DVD player ^_^

The PS3 sounds very much like the hideously expensive, technologically advanced consoles of yesteryear like the CD-i and 3DO. And I'm sure you all know what happened to them!

Indeed, the PS2 came out in the right time, when DVDs started to catch on.

The problem is that for the mainstream is kinda embarrasing to spend a lot in games, but if the console can double as a DVD player, Tivo, internet-on-TV or any other use, you no longer need an excuse to buy it

Now, thats not goin to ahppen to PS3, becos its goin to be way more expensive that what the PS2 was, and the DVD is goin to stay a couple more years, thus blueray wont work as an excuse to buy it, since there arent any movies out yet.

 

I really don't think Bluray will catch on. People have already embraced the DVD, and they have already invested a lot of money into it. Honestly, I don't see why we need to "upgrade" from DVD. It can already hold the movie, have several language options, and still have room for extras.

Also, when the PS2 came out in the US DVD players were already getting cheaper. A good DVD player could be had for $150, so I don't think anyone got the PS2 as a cheap DVD player seeing as the PS2 was $300 when it first came out. I think the fact that it could also play DVDs appealed to casual gamers though, which also helped it out.
