Even more alarming, this sounds like the "home computer" part of the Colecovision and Intellivision, and even the 2600 and 7800. The price is another factor that killed both the Adam and the Aquarius...

And you all know what happened to those as well.
Maybe this could be a VERY short generation... let's hope not.

I don't think there will be another crash, even if the PS3 hits rock bottom (which is very unlikely.. Mainly because too many people are hyped up about the XBOX360. Also, the Nintendo will have it's usual fan base to keep it alive with Revolution. After all, Nintendo fans are very very loyal to... well, Nintendo of course. They are the ones who have been keeping the big N around since the N64, that and the Gameboy.

I'm not too hyped up about any of the next gen machines, and I'm not too interested in the DS and PSP either. I think It will be a good time to start buying all the Saturn, PSX, SNES, and Genesis classics I have been wanting to buy...

Oh, and DC games, How could I forget DC games!

It'll take more than a few systems to take down another big Game company. I played a game on the DS, and it was very frustrating. Mainly because I wasnt used to the game and the controls. I played them at a Gamestop, too. I personally like the GBA a lot more, and I wish the Revolution won't have gimmicks. The PSP isnt really interesting me a lot right now, either. I think Im gonna miss the days of the ol' GBA...

The whole point in blu-ray and HD-DVD is that they have the capacity to store high-definition video - something the DVD standard does not allow (I know some DVD players can output HD, but the actual video on the disc is always 480 or 576-line). Only problem is not a lot of people have HDTVs - compare this to when DVDs came out around the mid '90s, when the PAL and NTSC colour TV standards were already over 30 years old - the only problem was with people who had older TVs with no AV inputs, as most players have no RF outputs - but this was a minority by around 2000 when DVDs were becoming "mainstream".

Right now, I don't know a single person (in real life) with an HDTV, and I can't really see anyone I know buying one by the time the PS3 comes out. I know blu-ray discs will still look better than DVDs even on standard def TVs, but only videophile narcs like me would notice the difference ^_^

  8. This may have been mentioned by me or others several thousand times by now but...

Blu-ray is the new Laserdisc. People didn't even realize how shitty VHS looked until they saw DVDs (even though LD had always been there and been better). Kinda like how, somehow, people are using current systems on RF modulators. Hell, I bet they'll even have them for these new systems :p Even on an HD set a regular DVD has more than acceptable image quality for just about anyone. I just don't see Blu-ray really taking off even with the help of the PS3. You could even argue that DVD was really taking off on its own ANYWAY in North America around the time the PS2 came out. I will admit that it certainly did help DVD in Japanat least (since, after all, they were heavily invested in LD over there, and DVD wasn't as dramatic an improvement over LD than over VHS. Early DVDs were often worse than the LDs of the same title due to artefacting and such.) Blu-ray isn't likely going to be more convenient over DVD either, which itself is far more convenient than VHS and especially LD. Basically unless the players and media are the same price as DVD, very few are going to care. And CERTAINLY even fewer are going to rebuy everything they have on HD, like a lot of people did going VHS->DVD.

Good point Cahaz. Some cartoons for kids are still being released both in VHS and DVD down here.

In my opinion, DVD's still have at least 10 years of life, before something replaces it. So, HD-DVD and Blu-ray will be bought mostly by rich people with their 90" TVs for their home cinema rooms.

I wont go as far as sayin 10 years, but at least theres 3-4 more years until DVD would start to be replaced (and then 3 more until its completely outdated).

Good point the one of the collection: a recent study proved that the recent down in DVD sales was due to ppls individual collection: most of them had already completed their collections, thus making a huge hit to the classic DVDs sales.

Anyways, to close the subject, we are in recesion: when the DVD came out it was the climax of the dotcom era and a lot of ppl had a lot of money to spend in new gimmicks. Now since the Nasdaq meltdown we are living a worldwide economical crisis, and ppl can no longer afford this kind of technology.

Bluray are goin to make their way up, but its goin to take them twice (or treble) the time that the DVD needed to do so.

it's still a new technology. you'll buy a BR-reader for Blue-Ray Discs, not dvds. That's a bit like a new console with retro compatibility.

exactly :) i love my table dvd since can read old technology like vcd and svcd too, it's just a matter of features.

and as you can see no need to re-buy the old videos or to have 2 readers one next to the other like vhs and dvd

This thread has been a good read. I think that the PS3 will still be 1# (not as much as it is now) for the shear fact that people are buying the 'Sony' name at first glance. I remember talking to people about the DC shortly after it was released. I think 85% of them wanted nothing to do with it, their only want was what 'Sony' had coming out.

The price point, as mentioned a few times in this thread will be very important. People these days don't have $1000 lying around to spend on anything they wish. Even if the PS3/XBox360 are $400 you will need another $150-$250 to buy another controller and games. Also not many people outside the hardcore community don't realize that the game companies are looking to raise prices of games, which will also affect how much people walk out with from a retailer on launch day.

I currently own a PSP, and it is a great device. I also am quite angry that there are more UMD movies out then games. I couldn't care less about the movies, and mainly purchased it as a gaming platform. I have as of late been looking to import most of the games I want to play, rather then go down to the local EB and hope they have something worth while to buy.

I'm one of the few people I know that still own's and uses their LD player. I bought it shortly before the DVD players came into the mainstream. I still have a few LD SE sets that I watch, and haven't thought about upgrading to the new DVD's.

I will also agree that people won't want to rebuy there entire DVD collection, especially people that are movies fanatics with 1000+ DVD collections.

I think Sont is trying to hard to include all this new technolgy into the PS3.

i've love the first playstation (so many great RPGs!) and like ps2, but i won't invest that much money for the console and GAMES. I mean 1 game CAN'T cost that much! i'm already pissed paying 50 euro a game....

Well, EA said games would have higher prices for sure (their games anyway). then again, EA can go to hell.
