I agree. This is indeed amazing news. I'd love the TV show to go ahead. Strange that the BBC commissioned Game Gaiden from those guys who did Consolevania but won't commission a show dedicated to one of the UK's most famous failed electronic devices. Yakumo
The producer said that they got something like 500 submissions, and I guess this one is too niche to get a chance against all the celebrity dogs on ice sort of crap the general public seem to lap up.
Exciting news everyone - I've found someone that has a Konix Game! Source code and compiled binary... Hope to get a hold of it soon, I already know someone very interested in making an emulator!
OK, I've got it - it's on my hard drive now! Just need somebody to write an emulator (that's not too much to ask is it?)
Holy hell. Could we finally see a playable game some 20 years later after the Konix's demise? I'm super excited here!
Why not approach the MAME/MESS team? They have the hardware emulated in MAME except it uses a Z80 instead of the 8086.
It was because I gave Phil Bennett the Slipstream hardware reference guide that he was able to emulate what he did for agemame. However without the source code for the bell fruit slot machine ROMs he is emulating and examples of the dsp being used in them it is incomplete. I have now given him the source code for robocod2 - however it looks like the hosting has expired on his website so until that gets resolved we won't see if he's made any further progress. Hopefully he'll just e-mail me with updates. The main thing with emulation is availability of source code and complied binaries. I'm still chasing and expanding my network of contacts to see if anyone else has konixmultisystem specific code which shows off it's capabilities more so than a conversion of another machines games.
I remember the first KONIX product I ever bought, was KONIX Speedking joystick for the sinclair zx spectrum home microcomp, was the koolest joystick back in 1986, pistol grip type.. quarter of a century ago almost that was
The guy that owns it has been dealing with life stuff, so it isn't his biggest priority at the moment. I'll keep you updated when I find out stuff.
Good news everyone! Hopefully in a few weeks time (if the Stars are in alignment and the Gods are smiling on me). I will be able to take ownership of the only known to still exist Konix Multisystem Dev Kit. Now, this doesn’t mean that I'm going to be able to post videos of it running fancy demos or anything because I'm going to have to see if I can get it powered up without it blowing up first. Then I have to find a way to push some code to the thing which may be a little tricky as it used a PDS ISA card in a PC to upload and execute code to it (can anyone help me with real world experience of this on C64/Spectrum/Amstrad?). However, if I'm lucky, I may be able to get some of the test code that came with the Robocod source code that was recently discovered running on it and if we're even luckier - maybe Robocod will even run ?!?!? Now, remember - this is all the best case scenario - the thing may just be a rusty rotten lump of metal and silicon that never gets anywhere near close to running, however - it'll still be interesting enough for me to make a circuit diagram (assuming it's not more than 2 layers). And some nice hi-res pictures for reference. Man I wish I still worked in my old company where I had hardcore coders and old-school electronics designers at my disposal. I'll keep you updated in a few weeks.
Ok, I've got the unit - here are some quick and dirty pictures from the iPhone before a proper photo shoot. Spoiler: Show More to follow at some stage. Regards, Mark.
