I really think this is not the right time to think of giving up. Much work and progress has been done already. Every good project has its own hiccups, that's just a natural part of the process in its road to greatness. People believe in your project, so you should do it too. Don't give up, no matter what or who comes in the way.

I've been waiting for a project like this to happen for a very long time now, please don't give up guys. I'd easily pay up to $200 for one and if they wind up being closer to $100-150 I'd buy two easily. Is dreamshell going to be our only option for loading games? Is it possible that later on down the line someone can make a launcher that more closely resembles the original dreamcast main screen? If that's not possible I'm still down to buy though.

I would pay $150-$200 for a device, depending on the features and options it supported.

I spoke to about 20-25 people tonight in my local Swap Meet that would pay this price hands down.

It'd be awesome, I would also definitely buy one. It'd be a great way to ensure DC games live on and are playable on the original hardware for many years to come.

$150 is reasonable. I would definitely buy one.

Would love one of these myself.

If it was me selling it, I would try and smash them out to as many people possible, and very quickly.
Within a few months, you will be seeing cheap £10 Hong Kong clones on ebay, and on a much bigger scale. Unfortunately, the majority of people will go for the cheaper/shitty option and leave you guys and all the hard work you have done in the dust :/

It may be similar but 360 is more current and has a much bigger following, meaning many more units sold. I'd pay $200 for the DCIO if it supported HDD and CDDA.

    I'd pay $150, no problem.

Please don't give up, and ignore the other competitor - this is the the only project that has been openly discussed and worked on by a team of enthusiasts who were up front about their intentions from the start - I think most people appreciate that aspect. A community working together, that's a great thing.

I really wish you could keep on this project! I'm sure it'd be a success if it supports HDD and CDDA.

Also, I don't think it'd be clone in china... I mean it's a niche market and most retro flashcard aren't.

Hang in there guys, I'm willing to buy one for $150 which is pricey but this is a retro system that isn't main stream anyways plus compare this to the other Retro console SD devices and the price is just about the same. People pay $90 for NESRGB which improves the video but for an extra $60 you get to play games off a HDD or SD at full speed or better and keep your system going on forever. I keep my Wii and Xbox around just because I can load off a HDD a ton of games without using discs.

I'd be happy to pay ~$150 for one. Roommate and I have been hoping for something like this for a while =)

This is great work, and would have loved this on my Dreamcast. The drive was so noisy.
I know this is for development, but if you had it use a HDD instead of an SD card, a micro USB port to connect the HDD to a computer as an external drive for easy transfers, and a frontend for selecting what software to run, it would be worth $150. As it is (which is great, dont get me wrong) I would say probably about $80 would be what I would spend on it

Keep up the good work. Hopefully someday I will be able to have a DC with something like this in it

    @lerobot - definitely not through-hole stuff. ;)

It wasn't too bad to solder the FPGA + ARM chip manually, but would be very difficult for people who haven't done much SMT soldering before.

@Familyguy - that's a good point - some of those cart emulators are a bit expensive if you ask me, and most of them aren't as complex as the DCIO will be.

I understand that not everyone can justify the price of some of these boards though, so we are looking into making the DCIO cheaper.
I can't give a good estimate on the final price yet, as there are a lot of factors to think about, but cybdyn is definitely working on this.

Again, still work to be done. CDDA playback isn't running yet, and I've yet to even get my board running as I've been waiting for parts (and recovering from a month-long Flu).

OK, you guys have given me refreshed motivation (for the time being at least. :p ).

When you compare the DCIO to those cart emu's, it really does put things into perspective.
Some of them cost $200 or more, and they still get sold.

If we can get the DCIO below about $120, then I think we'll be OK.
(not saying we definitely can yet, but we'l try.)

It's not so much that we're worried about everyone buying Deunan's board, it's just a bit of a downer after all these years of work including my FPGA version.

Sorry to everyone who thought it might cost only $60-$70, but there's just no way to even get the parts + PCB for that price.

If we can squeeze the design into a CPLD and use a smaller ARM chip we could get the price down a bit, but that will take many months again.
I don't think many of you would be prepared to wait another 10 months for the DCIO to be released?

Many thanks for all the support though guys and gals, especially for asking around at Swap Meets etc. :D
That gives us a good ballpark figure to work from that we can hopefully reduce.

cybdyn now has Dreamshell booting from the DCIO (after a minor bug fix).
It now needs a simple app on Dreamshell so it can command the DCIO to load the chosen GDI / CDI tracks.

He's still working on it, and I will be too this week. ;)

As soon as I have my DCIO running, I'll upload some videos of it.
I know that vids always speak louder than words, so watch this space.

I’d pay 150–200 aswell. This is quite a niche product anyways, so don’t worry about the price too much. Also don’t be down because of GDEmu. Deunan’s project seems a lot more basic than what you are trying to do.

I’m still on standby for the branding stuff. Once preorders can start I’m sure I can help you put a nice micropage on. Then you spread the word (as atari2atari said) and the orders will run. From what I can tell you’ve worked way to long on this to quit now because someone else put together something vaguely similar. Don’t be distraught but be on fire to do better!
