You guys really take some great photos. I'll have to invest in a camera soon -- I know I'll regret later not having taken any pictures.

I'd rather just see what kind of talent you can show us with a GoPro.

Nice shot, Yakumo. What a shit hole. :D

Hey, just tossing this out there, but has anyone seen this camera? It's supposed to be the "next big thing" in photography.
I'm sold. The examples on the website are incredible.

Its complete crap. This has been around a year or so now. The photos are 1.1 size or a square in other words. Resolution is poor and you can only view the photos using special software. Sure, the ability to focus on any part of the shot after taking it is amazing but I best that you could do the same thing with any photo if someone was to make the software. I can't see this being anything more than a novelty gimmick.

The reason for the special software, is that it's not a conventional image file. And no, there is no way to duplicate what Lytro does using software.* We will probably see versions of Photoshop and other software that will support light field images in the future. The technology is really promising, but yes, at it's current level of maturity it is somewhat of a gimmick. Toshiba is currently working on a light field camera that has 30,000 lenses. Every photographer in the world would like a DSLR camera that they could point, shoot and then focus later. So I think it will catch on with time.

*You could program a camera to take dozens of photos with different degrees of focus, and the choose the one you like better later, but it would take at least a few seconds to capture all the photos, and you wouldn't have the same flexibility.

Not what it does exactly, as you stated, but if you Google around, there's a Photoshop demo of a feature I thought they called "In Focus" or something like which is fucking amazing. I can't find it on Google though, and it didn't make it into CS6. But, they took a random image that was pretty out of focus and, as the name stated, fixed it. Something like that is far more worthwhile to the likes of me until the above technology is somehow integrated into the current line up of cameras.

Also from what I've heard, you need a shit ton of light for that camera no? Kind of useless for me ATM, as many of my pictures can't go any narrower than F4, and quite a few not even F2.

The two demos that come to mind are the light field photography demo and the deblurring demo. The light field photography demo (link) seemed to just be showing off how Photoshop deals with light field images, like the one made by cameras like the Lytro. The deblurring demo (link) shows how blur can be reduced, but only if it's motion blur from an unsteady camera. Also, Rainn Wilson is in the video.

The video I saw was neither of those. Unfortunately my brain sucks shit. It was a smaller audience (much smaller) and a shittier video. They showed a handful of "new things" Adobe was working on. I remember one other one was you could use one photo as a "template" and it would adopt that photos contrast, color balance, etc. and immediately apply it. Kind of cool... but also takes a lot of the fun out of processing images.

museovivo, loving that Meiji shrine door shot. I thought it was another one of Gaijin Punch's works of art.

I'm off out tonight so I'll see if I can get any interesting shots. Doubt it but you never know.
