They are made for tall people to discern the blades just as they stab you in the eye.

I seem to recall reading that you can pick them up cheaply in most convenience stores as a "disposable" umbrella, and they're all the same design.

Personally, I'd rather keep my Umbrella umbrella. It's a red and white segmented umbrella, like the logo of the Umbrella corperation in the Resident Evil games, hence it's an Umbrella umbrella ;)

Today, we had the yearly Honshu / Kyushu firework show that takes place between the two main parts of Japan. The show lasts for about 40 minutes and attracts people from as far as Osaka which is a few hundred miles away!

I took a 1080p video of the show which I'll be uploading to YouTube later on but for now here's a few screen grabs from the video.

There are designer umbrellas, and people do their best to keep them, but the "disposable" ones are cheap (at least when compared to the US, at 500 yen) and they are the one thing that Japanese have very little qualms about stealing when faced w/ getting drenched in the rain.

Video now up on YouTube of yesterday's spectacular firework festival. Best to watch in 1080p. I used manual focus too so there's none of that awful blur-O-vision every time a firework explodes.

I saw the fireworks show in Shimonoseki in 2011 and was pretty disappointed by it to be honest, probably because I'd read too much hype about it. There was absolutely zero choreography, just 20 minutes of the occasional lone firework followed by them seemingly deciding to just set off whatever they had left at the end. The fact that they started when it was barely dark enough and the whole place had pretty much cleared out by 9.30 didn't help either. Having said that, it's exactly the same in Asakusa and Yodogawa.

Yep, 2011 was a shit year as was 2010. The city was strapped for cash back then. The show in 2008 was amazing. That was really good. This year's show was good, far better than the last two.
