I seem to remember Doom 3 had some long-ass loading times. Although if I tried to play it on my current PC, it would probably load almost instantly.
Crash Bandicoot - Wrath of Cortex on PS2. It's the only CD-based PS2 game I own, with that lovely deep blue colour on the bottom of the disk. Unfortunately, the load times are obscene, like a minute+ for each level, especially for a game that's barely more complex than CB Warped on the PSOne.
Digimon Digital Card Battle, took 2+ minutes to load a save file. Chrono Trigger is an incessant chain of 8-10 second loads for just about everything you will do in the entire game.
I think they're a bit longer that that, the main problem is that the game has loading screens every 5 minutes or so. Not that you would want to play it though
Resident Evil Outbreak on the PS2 - think only the PAL release suffers from really long loading when going through doors etc. because the HDD was not available in europe? could be wrong as im sure my memory is going!
I can't imagine anything pass Soldier of Fortune on Dreamcast... I remember I would make (and eat) PB&J sandwiches while waiting for that game to load.
Yeah, but SoF still can't beat WH: Mark of Chaos - it's fucking ten to fifteen minutes. Yeah, you can wait 15 minutes to load one mission. Even the largest cassette-based game just can't beat this record
SOF is a great game on DC, one of the best FPS in console until its time, the graphics are awesome. But it lacks multiplayer, the loading times are just like said, there are A LOT of slowdowns when there are more than two or three enemies on screen, the controll is not the best (i dont get use to aim with left hand in this game, and i have finished a lot of PSP fps) and its very very dark. There are a very few FPS on Dreamcast (like 6 or 7) so not much alternative. I'm doing a playthrough the game. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXWOQoreImLS696LmgYGmXGj3P5SNKYMs
I've seen Dragon Raiders DCRes release and its not that long. Maybe is the custom file sort. But the longest loading i've seen in the game is ... like 40 seconds. SOF laugh at that.
Let's keep this topic close to games, if it will come to OS other software, there will be things like linux kernel on a 50kHz CPU (takes almost whole day to boot), or even loading OS from punched cards, in 60s it was possible. P.S. I don't remember XP being slow on my K6-2 550MHz. And it was booting from 5400 rpm quite old drive, not the slowest, but nothing like ATA-133 from 2004 and newer. It took a minute or so, 2010 Core2Duo laptop with 4 gigs of RAM boots just a bit faster. Maybe because my old machine had 768M of RAM ?
I have a CDR (shame of it, I know) of Soldier of Fortune on Dreamcast and while the loading is bad it is NOT 15 minutes at all. 5 minutes tops. Even then that's way too long and I'm sure most loading was about 1 to 2 minutes. For the time though it was a pretty good FPS.
I can't believe the Neo CD isn't mentioned more, in particular, Samurai Spirits RPG with its frequent random battle encounters and 3-5 min load times for each one.
