I don't really deal with pc games , and I had someone offer to share uncommon beta versions with us. The question is arer the below listed games too new to consider, what ones would be seen as piracy, what ones as legitimate items of interest to a gamer. "Doom 3 alpha, Unreal 2 alpha, Warcraft 3 beta, Hitman 2 beta, Half Life 2 episode 2 particle benchmark alpha, Painkiller pre-alpha, Qauke I and III beta and alpha, Unreal Tournament 2003 beta." Thanks.
It really depends on how complete it is. Stuff like the doom 3 alpha doesnt have much in the way of content. All those things are extremely interesting though hah, with my question being how far along are they.
It would depend on the completeness of the builds I guess (content wise). I'd say Unreal 2, Warcraft 3 (Pre-Multiplayer Beta otherwise probably not worth it) or Painkiller would be the most interesting.
I have a doom 3 alpha (i dont know if it is the same as Assembler's) and i think it was a E3 demo, it is very interesting. I think the most interesting ones would be the hitman 2 beta, the quake I beta(or alpha, whatever), the HL2 benchmark (is this the one that benchmarks CPU's?), and the painkiller pre_alpha
As many have already said it depends on how much of the final game is in there as to whether it's right to release them or not, I'm pretty interested in some PC betas, plus almost everyone will be able to run alot of them unlike problems with consoles such as those without modded hardware.
I second that on the Quake 3 and HL2. I wouldn't mind the Hitman 2 beta also to test out. Sounds good to me
No one has answered original question "what ones would be seen as piracy, what ones as legitimate items of interest to a gamer."
Lets see, Doom 3 alpha: Was it the same one leaked several years ago? Unreal 2 alpha: Never heard of this one being released Warcraft 3 beta: Is it single player or multiplayer? Hitman 2 beta: Never heard of this one being released Half Life 2 episode 2 particle benchmark alpha: Wasn't it released Painkiller pre-alpha: Sounds interesting Qauke I and III beta and alpha: Sounds interesting Unreal Tournament 2003 beta: Sounds interesting EDIT: Personally, I think the Half Life 2 Episode 2 particle map would be seen as piracy, but Quake 1 and 3 both had their source code released by ID, so I see no harm. Same with Unreal 2 and Painkiller.
Basically, it is all the new particle effects that are going to be in Episode 2. There was a Youtube video awhile back, but I can't find it anymore. EDIT: Wait, I found it: http://youtube.com/watch?v=pb-XGJxki7Y
Half Life 2 episode 2 particle benchmark alpha This is actulaay already released and legal ... It's a tech demo from valve that they gave to some people and theses persons had the right to give it too.
The Doom 3 alpha might be seen as piracy, not sure. Unreal 2 alpha, I don't think it'd be as piratey. Warcraft 3 beta, probably not, unless we're running some large battle.net server to play eachother. Hitman 2 beta, I don't think so, it's rather old. Half Life 2 I wouldn't consider that but they may be Nazis. No idea about painkiller. Quake and UT2k3 I think would be ok. But I just base it on how new I think they are and how likely the company is to be Nazi about it.
Thanks for the link! I just read the commets in the video and its already released...on valves site so there shouldn't be a problem with having it.
I'm very interested in PC betas. However, the ones listed above aren't really rare, so you shouldn't waste too much time dealing with them. Not-yet-leaked betas are fine, but stuff you can already find on the net with a few minutes of searching isn't worth the trouble.
