Following the 'Mac ads' topic which has just been created, I'm just curious to know how many mac users there are on these boards. EDIT: Forgot to put Mac - other OS. Sorry.
Well I've always used PC, just because of the mere fact that any Apple product is hard to find here in Uruguay (only one official distributor, though right now there are appearing a couple more), and usually they go for twice or thrice the retail price in the US. I'm very comfortable with Windows despite all the problems it may bring. For a couple of years I used both Windows XP and Linux Suse but alternately ended up deleting Linux. Now I'm with Vista and I'll be with Windows 7 in a couple of days. I do like very much Macs though! Just never had one.
I started using a mac purely for photography and development purposes but now I don't think I'd ever switch back to a PC, I do miss the gaming a bit but I can live without it. Give it a couple of years and I can see Macs becoming far more mainstream. OSX while lacking the flexibility of Windows is a much better pick up and use OS which certainly appeals to the technophobes out there. I agree that the prices are a little high but with such stiff competition I guess they have to push hard to make their money and cover costs which microsoft don't such as dedicated hardware and software support teams, retail spaces etc. I rejoined my old university again this year after a break of 3 years, so many students sitting with Macbooks now in the canteens and social areas. 3-4 years ago you wouldn't have seen this.
Dual Boot - Windows XP and Debian Linux (Lenny, if you care). Debian for everyday use, XP for the occasional game.
All the computers in my house are Macs at this point. And OSX is as flexible if not more flexible then Windows, though admittedly using that is a bit harder at times (requires a bit of searching, without thousands of solutions like on Windows). That said, I can still use Windows without issue, though I prefer to just use a console at this point if Im going to play a game, with some exceptions.
I've had a Mac in the house since the early days. I remember spending hours playing: 'Dark Castle' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCkbp4wurW0 'Warlords' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4dtcdnqBis and 'Arkanoid'. Oh, the memories...
I am a PC user and been all my life except for the few times at primary/secondary school where i used macs. I currently have dual boot of XP and 7 on my PC which i do use to game on or as much as my current hardware lets me until i upgrade. I would love to get a mac especially the new 27", the 21.5" or any recent kind of mac but unless i find a really cheap but decent one then i probably won't be getting one anytime soon.
If i was going to get one of the new macs i'd have to get a 27" version with the i5 quad core cpu and Radeon HD 4850 512mb graphics. That configuration right there would suit almost all my needs in one and just having a massive 27" screen to use would be fantastic, would sure be better than the shi**y 15.4" flat screen monitor i'm using at the moment.
Full time Mac user here. Typing this from a 13" MBP hooked up to an old apple cinema display. Macs already have become much, much more mainstream. Just like you said, look at all the college students having a Macbook now compared to 3-4 years ago. Especially when you compare the amount of Mac users pre-OSX (or even pre-Tiger) with the amount of Mac users now you can see a massive growth. And to be honest, I don't like it that it's becoming mainstream. There are basically two things I hate about Macs. 1. The price 2. All the fashion-blahblah people showing them off saying: "Oh my god I look so cool with my fashionable Apple computer. I'm so awesome". I see them all the time here and Macs becoming more mainstream means more of those people, ugh.
I always had a thing for the Mac Mini and specially for this beauty: The advertisements for this one were awesome!
Macs have always been mainstream. And just about everyone's agreed they're "better" since their introduction. There are still reasons not to go Mac: -you prefer your appliances unflavored -you can't limit your creativity to a minimalistic UI -you don't want to virtualize Windows to run your development/productivity software -you develop/use system hardware -you aren't looking to invest in a depreciating piece of modern art -your individuality doesn't need affirmation
Well, they're having iPods anyway since day 1. I still remember the good old days when people were borrowing other's Apple headphones so people were supposed to think they had an actual iPod connected to it That recent Simpsons joke got reality long before Groening adapted it. I never had an Apple product so far and I'm not that impressed by the Dock or whatever. Actually I'm a little skeptical how long it will take to get used to all the new commands and functions, but I guess it's not gonna take long - I mean, every Sex and the City-chick can use a Macbook  @topic: I've used the following types of computers for a standard configuration: 1996-1999: PC - Windows 95 1999-2004: PC - Windows 98 2004-2009: PC - Windows XP 2009-????: iMac - Mac OSX So excited, LOL. Unboxing it alone is going to be a defining moment for me :katamari:
