I'd used Windows since v3.1, but off & on I had used various Mac computers and OS. Two years ago I purchased an iMac dual core and switched to dual boot OSX & WinXP. Both have their good and bad points. Sometimes, just because I am more familiar with it I prefer to work with XP, however I tend to work more in OSX these days as I become increasingly comfortable with it.
I would emulate linux, I would never run it as a base. Linux is a troubleshooting headache for me. And miss the ease of simply clicking things and having them run correctly without constantly googling sudo commands.
Come on! Since window managers like KDE and GNOME, packet managers like RPM, and apt-get are around it's easy once you have the basics down, which takes two weeks max!
Just because you can pick up Linux and go does not mean that the average user can. Linux is very unwieldy to someone who doesn't have intimate knowledge of how computer operating systems work.
But for basic use Linux is very easy to use. The Ubuntu installer does the job nicely and we were online with Firefox straight away last time I did a Linuxbox.
That explains my vanished mac thread I didn't even see this. Yeah every one Iknow uses macs but me and my parents. If they don't use macs they want to only 2 are die hard PC not counting myself. Sales figures slant towards PCs but mac users are springing up everywhere. I just GET mac users at all.
I played around with Linux but honestly it seemed more bloated than OSX and since OSX already has a UNIX terminal that can run anything I need, or be used for system tweaking and coding, Linux doesn't have any advantage for me. Programming on the Mac is like, heavenly.
I'm downloading Knoppix right now. Just so I can say I run 4 OSes on my Laptop (WIN 7, DOS, Win 3.1 and Linux)
I literally almost fell out of my chair after reading this one :lol: . What distro of Linux were you using? Check out this thread, for kicks and gigs: http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24760
Of course this is a terrible generalization but I found most MAC users to be more about trendyness than substance. It's about owning a MAC for the sake of owning one. It's similar to what I experienced in school, where lots of somewhat "Clueless" computer students installed and use Linux on their notebooks because they could brag to their programming profs, "I use Linux. I'm so cool with tech!", vs the 1% of us who used it for more tangable reasons. I will say though, that it does make for hilarious results when you call one of these people out. (^_^); One guy was talking so much crap, like "I found a bug in the Linux kernal that lets me have root and its only fixed in red hat because I only sent my fix in to them". Obiously he doesn't know what he's talking about and Red Hat was the only distro he knew at the time. He figured no one else used Linux legit so no one could verify what he said. But low and behold! Someone turns around with his laptop, gives him a shell and goes "OK, show me". This was followed by: Slow typing... "Invalid command" like errors. finally a statement of "Um... Looks like they patched it in this version". (^_^);
The look on a student's face when you tell them "that's fine, but we use Visual Studio for this class and I don't have the time to help you with gcc and makefiles" is priceless.
