    lovely, cheers :)

I've found my local copy of the downloads, picked out the first one with your explanation in a text file, added the other bios files to it and popped it here - http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/downloads/MEGA-CD_FREE_JUE.zip

when I get a chance, I'll add some links from the main site :)

If anyone has anything relevant that they want hosted, as long as it's not massive then PM me, I get a pretty good deal on my hosting and bandwidth these days.

    Thanks l_oliveira!

I'm not at a computer right now, but that should be included in the link in my post above yours?

I opened mine and noticed that my model 1 Sega CD is already factory socketed... I just replaced it with the one I purchased from B. However now I am experiencing a tray problem, when I press start to close,it ejects automatically so it doesn't read anything... It doesn't lock the tray inside...How can I solve this problem?

Sometime recently my mega CD was having similar problems. I replaced the rubber belt.

I think they should replace those rubbers with chains like as in Toyotas...:)
It seems tight to me may be a little loose there, but not super tight. BTW I diassembled the tray, aligned the gear, but couldn't reassemble it yet. I once owned a Pal Mega CD which had a JVC drive, it's working flawlessly. This Sony one sucks. I put it in a closet, have not used for more than a year, but last time it's working...

Belts are cheap. Gears would have been a better idea if possible since the plastic they're made of typically doesn't fall apart under the average conditions of a house. Plus the teeth are usually resilient pending some kid doesn't shove the tray in with great force.

Though that last bit still happens to this day on modern consoles.

I recently found a PAL MegaCD at a flea market, so time to do some modding :)

I just ordered a 27C1024 flashed with a byteswapped region free japanese bios, but instead of totally replacing the original bios rom (which requires the hassle of removing the chip, risking damage) i wanted to piggyback a socket on it and add a switch to select between original bios and the hacked one (just in case the eproms get here broken, so i'm left with a working MegaCD).

Any advice on which pins i need to connect to the switch to do that? Is it sufficient to lift Vcc (pin 40) from the original rom and add the switch between that and the Vcc from the flashed eprom (soldering the remaining ones together pin-by-pin)?

    EDIT:
Doing some read on the web i found that a soloution would be lifting pin 20 and add a switch so that:
    * when EPROM 1 is active:
    - pin 20 EPROM 1 connected to the pin 20 on the board
    - pin 20 EPROM 2 connected to +5v
    * when EPROM 2 is active:
    - pin 20 EPROM 1 connected to +5v
    - pin 20 EPROM 2 connected to pin 20 on the board

Can anyone with some expertise confirm (or deny) this?

    Pin 2, NOT 20.

20 is output enable (/OE or /G), not chip select (/CE).

Put 2 resistors of 10K ohm connected to the two pin 2 (one for each ROM chip) the other side of both resistors you bind together and connect to pin 40 of both chips. That makes sure they're disabled unless one of the PIN2s are connected to the trace for the PIN2 in the mainboard.

Put the 2 position switch with the center pin connected to the motherboard and each corner pins connected to each of the switches.

But anyway, making a hole on the console kind of defeat the purpose of the region free bios ...

To each one their own. ;)

If you need any help just shout.

    Oh, thanks a lot!

I don't want to cut a hole in the case of the console: the switch will remain hidden inside, It's just a safeguard in case i want to go back to the original bios or the programmed eproms get here broken!

I'll surely come back for some more help :)

To check if i understood the instructions correctly i made a small scheme:
Is it ok? It implies that EVERY corresponding pin of the EPROM and the ROM (except pin 2) are soldered together and to the board.

If this is correct i'll start preparing the mod by adding a socket in place of the eprom (so i'll be ready when the programmed eproms from HK arrive).

Great! I'll start working on it after i finished replacing the caps (I noticed the drive needs a few minutes after power on to start reading discs properly).

    Thanks for the help!

    Phew! Did it!
Now i just need to wait for the new EPROM, in the meantime i can use it as a standard european MegaCD (replacing all the capacitors fixed my drive problems too :) )
