The only way something liek this could work is if Microsoft's involvement is in the form of entries to a suggestion box.

omg it uses that much ? I dont even have that much memory on my pc so I guess that my drive is getting used a hell of a lot

Seriously we better grab the source code now just in case one day microsoft do take over firefox (if I owned firefox and microsoft offered me a $BN then I would be tempted to sell )

Yeah I must admit Firefox hogs so much memory at times, it's ridiculous.

I heard there was a fix/tweak/whatever (too lazy to search for it).

The thing is, why the fuck should you have to fix it? Fuck that. IE or Opera.

Firefox 3.0 on OS X 10.5.3. 150MB RAM used, 14 tabs open. Not bad, I'd say.

    You've got to be kidding, 512Mb? I'm running FireFox 3 and I average about 30Mb, so I don't know where you're getting 512Mb from.

I forgot that I saved this screen capture a few weeks back.

I don't remember what exactly I was doing (though I wasn't downloading anything), but I'm pretty sure there may have been some other factors other than the claim that "Firefox rapes memory."

mine routinely tops out at 300+ MB. Even so, I don't really see a need to upgrade to FF3 yet, as I'm fine with the extensions I have, and I have more than enough ram to cover it hogging 300 MB.

Firefox 3 taking 173mb with 2 Windows open, here, and twitlive.tv, live streaming video, so not bad (on OSX, as if it matters)

I don't see why everyone moans about memory. It's not like it's expensive or anything... this is how development has shifted due to cheap hardware. And the fact that this argument is used to vindicate Microsoft is laughable, at best. (Mine spikes up to 30% of my 1GB, but it's usually around 10%). Skype sometimes takes more.

Whatever it was you were doing, I would say at that point it wouldn't make a lick of difference what browser you were using. A process THAT intensive in FF would be just as bad in IE, so your example is, for the most part, meaningless.

When simply browsing I have never had FF even come close to 512Mb, which is where I was coming from with my first post. Also, FF3 is better with memory than previous versions, but as GP and PhreQuencYViii said, when you can get a shitton of RAM for cheap, it doesn't really matter anymore.

Yes! Thankyou. I totally agree. I have no problem if people use firefox. Thats fine by me, but I just prefer IE more than any other browser. I just hate the fact that every firefox user "despises" IE. I just hate having friends over that say, "Why dont you have Firefox? IE sucks!"

Does it suck just because they prefer something else? Hahahaha. ;-)

I don't despise IE, I just don't find it as useful. When I made the switch I did so because IE 7 wasn't out yet, so there had to be a window open for each site you're browsing. The main reason I like Firefox better than IE is just because it's fully customizable. Also, with Firefox there are lots of extensions that you can add that makes browsing more convenient. For some websites, I have to use IE, like my local radio station's streaming feed, and it doesn't bother me, as I said, the extra features are what motivates me to use Firefox.

No. It sucks b/c, just like everything else Microsoft puts out, it does not follow standards. Unfortunately, they can't get sued for these like they did with Java.

I have to agree with that on IE. I hate how it holds web design back.

Got FireFox 2 running at over 512MB right now (13 tabs open, left running for several days since I'm a bit lazy to keep closing it). I can close FireFox (end process actually) and get it down to just over 100MB with it restoring the session, but then balloon back up towards 512MB.

I'm thinking sites like youtube isn't too FireFox memory friendly, but even if I don't visit youtube between ending process and restarting FireFox, it still leeches memory.

BTW, my comp is maxed out at 4GB of ram, but am using 32-bit Vista atm. (Booting into 64-bit Vista doesn't seem to make any difference, even using the unofficial 64-bit FireFox).
