But what if the data that the game is supposed to receive from the server was a decryption key for some other data that is critical and must be able to be decrypted for the game to work? Though perhaps you could still hack up something using data from the retail version...

 

OK for those of you that seem a tad confused, The way most beta/dev build activation occurs is that the game will ask for confirmation from a server that then says to the game that it can proceed.
If it can not get this "OK" then it will either kill itself or more commonly just not go past the start screen.

The way past this that is usualy used is to simply nop out the activation check or set the activation to always proceed.

Problem is you need some skill with RE and ASM/PowerPC.

EDIT: This is in response to some folk thinking we need decryption keys or the such, all the assets are there just the main executable won't run them cause it never receives the OK to do it.
and set up a server? come on now thats just silly.

Like i said, all that's needed is to reverse engineer this server auth. check, Make it so that a fail still clears the "OK" buy forwarding the check to the OK location regardless, therefor fail or authenticate, you'll pass through the check no matter what. Had to do this with dead rising to allow me into the online ranking board while off xbox live. simple stuff, Just learn PPC. There is nothing you need to do to the game files, and trying to set up some kind of IP sniffer is just nonsense. reverse it yourself.

I took a crack at it and managed to get single player running. Im not sure if ill be able to get multiplayer lobbies working. Send me a PM and we can talk about it.

If the crack doesn't end up getting public, maybe at least a video showing off a few things? Or would even that devalue a (now-?)public though commonly-uncracked build?
