My friend is a big fan of the Pixies, but I've never listened to them. I've been listening to a lot of Tool lately. I bought "Ænema" today. It's a pretty good CD, yet I fail to see how this is "worse" than Slipknot. Christian parents (please excuse the broad generalization) are out to get Tool for supposed subliminal messages, yet Slipknot and other "Nu-metal" bands get away with pointless lyrics and screaming (the same could be said of Tool)?
Picked up the Nirvana Box Set, U2's new album and Silvertide's new album. All good. The nirvana set is basically a bunch of random demos, acoustics, and some early live stuff. Very raw. It's good though. U2 is pretty good, though I'm not a big fan of them. I just bought it to buy it. Get all that crap off the airwaves, ya know. ;-) I really like Silvertide. If your area has any copies of their album Show and Tell, pick it up. Sounds '80s, but its just rock, much like the Darkness, except better. And american. But it's not cause they're from america, it's more because they don't yell 10 octave too high. :smt043
Aenema is great. I've got Undertow and Lateralus too, and they're both well worth getting if you like that kind of thing. They're in their own class compared to Slipknot, never did understand exactly why they became so famous, given they just rehash what others had done far better many years before them... Other similar bands that I like - Kyuss (fucking fantastic), Electric Wizard, and on the more death metal side, Opeth and In Flames. Listening to Samael as I type, Eternal is the album to play Quake deathmatch to. Emperor's "IX Equilibrium" is fairly often played too. And if you don't know Mastodon - get out to the nearest record store, their new album is sublime. On the trip/hip hop side of things, Clouddead are unmissable, they're everything trip hop should have been. Also just got Dizzee Rascal's new one, not as good as the first - where's all the bass gone? Electro is cool too. Recently got a mix by Ceephax Acid Crew that is in there on the videogame retro style, well worth a listen. IF's "Fucking Consumer" is permanently in my playlist. The electro mix on Dave Clarke's World Service is fantastic too... so much good music... :-D
I'm still hunting In Flame's "Subterranean/Lunar Strain" album down; it's damn hard to find in America. Opeth is also another one of my favourites (right now I'm looking for Morningrise).
"Music is my radar" Here's what I'm into, and luckily I've seen most of them live in concert at some stage or other, except of course 'the velvets' ... The Jesus and Mary Chain Primal Scream The House of Love Dinosuar Jr The Legend Biff Bang Pow The Velvet Underground The Pastels Orange Juice The Stranglers Sex Pistols (early stuff) Radiohead The Cure Banshee's The (Southern Death) Cult Stone Roses Happy Mondays Joy Division New Order The Smiths Morrissey Inspiral Carpets Blur Killing Joke The Pixies They Might be Giants The Wedding Present ...I think I'd better stop, this list could take forever!
Morningrise is similar to Blackwater Park, but the songs are even longer, and more melodic in general. The album as a whole is not as good, unfortunately - it takes longer to get into, and even then it lacks the beauty of Blackwater (which is my favourite Opeth album, followed probably by Still Life). The one to find is the Radio 1 Breezeblock Mix, with Ed DMX and Ceephax Acid Crew. The Cephax portion of that is so fucking good. Their other stuff is hit and miss - they can be great, they can be boring. Good luck finding it anyway, their official releases are few and far between ^_^ If you like interesting electronic music (the wider genre doesn't seem to have a name... "intelligent" electronic, electronica, electro etc etc), another name you should be familiar with is Amon Tobin. In a class all of his own. For the hip-hop/electronica crossover, pay attention to Prefuse 73... One World Extinguisher is wicked, whether you like hip-hop/rap or not. The production values alone carry it. A damn fine band. Been listening to White Light/White Heat a bit recently, which is interesting, but not as accessible as their debut (which is a true classic).
I own Blackwater Park and Deliverance, but I have a burned copy of Damnation (I'm not about to pay $20 for it. I'll find it somewhere other than FYE). So far, Damnation is my favourite album, although most people don't seem to care for it. Perhaps because there's no demonic growling in it (I like death/black metal for the music, usually, not the vocals). Blackwater Park is my second favourite, followed by Deliverance.
Well, lucky you. In Holland new CD's cost 20e mostly, and the bastards have been moving that to 22e on some occasions :angry
I feel better, but I'm still not paying $20 for an album, especially when I got the previous albums for $10 each (new). :smt071
Jesus. Here in the UK if you pick a CD off the shelf it'll cost £12 and up, often £15. It doesn't come much cheaper unless it's on sale. I haven't heard Damnation yet, but since I'm with you on the vocal/music thing I guess I'll like it. I'll try and find it at some point.
