True, but only the XBox plays Unreal Championship 3 and Breakdown, the two best XBox 1* exclusives!

But yes, the Pi or any old PC you have lying around does now outpace the XBox is so many ways. But for ease and convenience, it's difficult to beat an XBox 1 as an emulation machine (as long as you don't intend to emulate anything higher than the 16 bit machines, mostly) as everything is menu drive, very configurable, and easy to use.

    * I mean the 'original XBox', since thanks to Microsoft calling the XBox 3 the 'XBox One', we can't really call the XBox 1 the 'XBox 1"... How stupid is that, not to mention inconsiderate to M$'s customer base, as since the XBox 360 was released, we've been calling the first XBox the 'XBox 1' and now the 'net is full of forums, web pages, and blogs all containing discussions and information about the XBox 1, which will confuse many new owners of the XBox One.

You guys don't have to worry about your dislike of my Xbox NAS project anymore. Think I killed the board with overheating. Lights flash orange and red now. No more Xbox NAS...

As for the Xbox 1 thing, I've always called the first model the "original Xbox". Saves confusion. Can't argue over that since the first Xbox console IS the original.

I said I'm all for pimping xboxes, long as they are to play xbox games. As for other stuff, there are things that do it all better.

Loud, noisy, better alternatives as I've said a few times. Its not even a good sd player anymore, as its outclassed by things you can easily buy for the money you'd get for a modded xbox.

It used to be a great media player, now it's just out of date hardware that'd expensive to run (comparatively).

it's not that noisy if you control the fan speeds or change the fan, it doesn't cost anything if you already have one, it also plays xbox games and does well with emulation. it's no more expensive to run than any other home computer(desktop) and i wouldn't have it running 24/7, produces nice RGB Scart output for a SD CRT TV.

yes, there are better alternatives but if you already have one... there's no need to buy a pi or whatever else. although the pi would be better for a more modern TV and lower powered setup, i also from time to time use my wii in the same way. either streaming or playing fomr a usb drive.

Point is, if you are using the xbox for a dedicated sd player or nas in this case (which will always be on!) you might as well sell it and fund something better.

Selling the xbox and using the money for something much better and lower power costs you nothing either. Also saves electricity in the long run. No reason to use the xbox, other than for playing xbox games.

This is no different than people reusing a pc as a router, which is also stupid.

Cool it guys. Please take this to another thread or PM. I won't be doing the Xbox NAS any more since the 1.6 board burned and died. (Almost quite literally too...)

In other news, I have 2 cheap 1.1 consoles on the way assuming I win the auctions. One works perfectly and the other has DVD drive problems according to the eBay descriptions. I'll see about sending them out for the 128MB upgrade and holding onto them as spares or something. Now I need to see about finding some more Samsung 605 drives and/ or SD616T drives for them. I'd like to find 2 605 drives working or otherwise and swap the laser sleds for ones from the 616T drives. I have had nothing but good experience from the one I did this to. All I need are 2 605 drives with bad lasers and 1 more 616T to be perfect. Then I'd have 3 of those hybrid drives on hand. Easier than hacking the whole 616T drive for the same results. I could even sell the 616T drives off with the 605 lasers for dirt cheap.

Now I need to get rid of the dead 1.6 and 1.2 boards to prevent clutter. At this rate I'm going I'll have an "Xbox junkyard" like Hex1gon...

This is my thread and it's supposed to be a work flow one about MY consoles. I think I have the right to say what I want discussed here.

BTW, what you're discussing is no longer on topic since my stuff for that project died and I won't be doing it anymore.

Its not "your thread", you started the topic, things get discussed beyond your control - thats how forums work.

You dont get to dictate the flow of the thread.

No rules are broken, you are also free to post updates with your work log - which is exactly how a forum works.

Are people who visit your house only allowed to discuss topics you approve?

Right. MOVING ON! I'll see about keeping it here for the moment.

My 128MB board just came in a moment ago (thanks N64 freak) and it works beautifully. I plopped it in, hooked everything up, and fired it up. Worked right away with my unlocked HDD and the current dashboard structure.

Proof that it is working perfectly.

    Virtua Cop 3 running. :)

Even though I say you have to hit the start button when you get to the warning screen around the 2 minute mark you don't have to. Just let it be and it will load eventually unless you have a problem with the system.

Nice! It's a shame your upgrade didn't work out. How much was the board?

Maybe try to hunt down one of those Beretta 92FS light gun for the XBOX. They come from Japan.
I have one of those green Madcatz and it wont aim right, I think this is because I am ( and you too it seems ) using a Flat Glass CRT.

I have the Beretta too and it not only looks way cooler ( And was not released in the US because it totally looks like a real gun ) but more importantly it seems to work perfectly well on my flat Glass Sony Trinitron CRT.

they seem cool, also if your CRT runs at 100hz then it maybe have issues with light guns

50/60hz is fine but 100hz doesn’t work right.

    $85 shipped to me.

Yeah. My Toshiba set is a flat screen CRT. I'll look into that. I do fairly well using a standard controller but it just isn't the same without a gun...

More news. Replaced the fan with an old 80mm 12 volt PC one I had in my heap of PC junk. Cooling is about the same but it's much quieter. Hooked it to the same plug the stock fan was on since it puts out 12 volts when UnleashX has it set to 5x speed. now my voice can be heard more instead of a sick sounding jet engine. :p

Also went ahead and bought a Beretta 92FS light gun. Cost me almost $60 but it comes NIB from Japan. Maybe it and the new hybrid HDD will show up at the sametime.

And if anyone wants the stock fan from the Xbox, it's yours for cost of shipping. PM me for details. Be warned that I did cut the original plug off of it for use on my replacement.
