Even though you enjoyed Korea, I would say try another country. Unfortunately, TEFL/TESOL is a mixed bag, you often get exploited as a foreign worker and most jobs are not 'real' teaching jobs in that you are not helping the kids learn and comprehend English. At least, this is my experience. Much of the stuff you experienced had some similarities to my experience teaching in Greece. Europe is a good place to teach though. The EU makes it very easy to gain employment and you won't be as exploited (depends on country). Plus, it is not as far away from home, which some people see as a benefit. Thanks for the thread. It was a fascinating read.
so what would happen if you go back there and say your old boss sees you on the street? a westerner is like a coloured dog in the mass of korean people i guess
Twimfy (aka: One of the grumpy elves!) Sounds like you had a pretty interesting cultural exchange experience. Similar to mine, but mine was in France and involved having a gun pointed at me. I didn't have to endure being forced into some damned Tolkien outfit though! Ho hum, I'd go back mate, iron out the curve as frankly it simply couldn't get any more bizarre than dressing up as an American accented elven English tutor. Could it?
Definitely not. I think it hit me harder because it was my first time. What got me the most was that everyone around me was having so much fun and no problems and in typical Hugall(my surname) family style I was getting shit on as per usual. Some people say it's just my way of looking at life but I disagree, my family is definitely cursed. Still life could be A LOT worse so I shouldn't complain.
The Koreans hate the Japanese. 100 years of occupation will do that. Also, they are pissed that they will never , ever be Japanese, the secret desire of all koreans. Even people korean born into Japan before WW2 are still considered Korean, even after 60+ years of being in Japan.
it took literally about 15 mins for it load all the way for me. it was worth it though. :icon_bigg
Quite crazy "ride" huh? I would never guessed you had all these problems while you were there. Still, i hope the second time is way better.
LMFAO! This is better than the black guy from japan at Gaijinsmash:clap: Why didn't you try to sleep your way out this one with your boss? That would've regained some trust and as long as you gave her whatever she'd have been invaluable in convincing those tards that a song and dance routine is far from from linguistic mastery. Nice outfit, did you feel you were more like one of santa's elves from the north pole like Will Ferrel or one of those mall elves that's really pushy and callous like in A Christmas Story? BTW is there any reason why the girl on the left looks a little bald?
Thread = win. Thankyou so much for taking the time and telling the story. Sadly, I don't think Korea sounds very appealing to me. If you can't get back in, you really should try another country. I have had two or three friends go to Beijing and seem to be having a blast. I don't know the specifics, but there haven't been any complaints. And, of course, there's Japan.
Hey Twimfy, this story is amazing! Keep on going and never stop, you won't be disappointed for sure ! EDIT : how about a blog of your next travel experience there??
Tell me why first and then I might say yes. Otherwise don't even think about it. I put the video up to show people what a bad time I had and yeah it is a bit of a laugh but I'd rather not have it on youtube where the context falls out.
Well obviously as a public service video to put off people even thinking of going to "teach English" in asia.
I see well no harm, I just wanted a better site so that anyone who wanted to view it could do so on a better equipped site. I think metacafe and pornotube are free or anyothers would work just as well. I've got it saved in it's entirety already in flv, I could convert it and send it to Megaupload or Adrive.
