So let me get this stright. If you had a 64DD you could make a emulator that would work on a pc? I mean it would have to be a good emulator to, decent speed and all. I have a boxed mint 64DD but it cost me a arm and a leg so im not to sure I could loan it out just like that.

Could you explain to me how to do what your wanting???

I'm trying to aquire a 64DD unit to probe (i've tried and lost on yahoo auctions 3 times, sadly by a mear 500Y). I am not sure I will 100% get emulation going but I should be able to get the ground work done. Maybe even get as far as having something running.

You have to remember, the 64DD added no power to the n64. It's just a media drive. So once enough is found out about the command communication and etc, emulation should be a snap.

I've already debugged the ipl4rom quite a bit and found out alot. The problem I have now is the fact I don't know what the status register returns after a reset. If the value is not correct the ipl either errors out or calls a set RTC command then ignores the DD. I already know the 3 main DD registers & where roughly things are located in memory (0x05000000-0x05FFFFFF is command based, 0x06000000-0x06FFFFFF is where the ipl rom, wave & font data is located).

If I can get a unit to prope the status register I should be able to figure out alot (what the system returns on reset, reg status when a cart is in or not in, etc). I plan to do this by hyjacking the ipl rom by making it store the results into save mem after every read.

Pretty much if I get somewhere with DD emulation I will make the info public for all n64 emu authors to intergrate into their work as well as intergrate into my own emu (monkey64).

Anyways I really did not exspect you to loan me a unit. I was just making a point that there are people who wish to see this happen but with it being costly or difficult to obtain, it's gonna take a while before it happens.

    --edit--
Actualy what is hurting me the most right now to get a unit is the fact I am still waiting for a guy to pay me for a few arcade games on another forum. If the guy would just hurry up and pay me I would have more cash to try again for another 64DD. Sadly since I can't buy off yahoo jp auctions directly I have to get a service to do it for me, They require deposiet that is 50% of your max bid up front. I have $120 I have deposited with them now for a max bid of 30,000Yen. Yet I lost twice with that. I wish to do more but untill I get the $200 someone owes me I can't increase my max bid to 40,000Y to have a higher chance to win a unit.

However, please keep in mind that even if subbie does get DD emulation (communication more like it) up and running, dumping the 4 blue disks would require someone to actualy be able to boot the dev 64DD so the ripper can copy the chunks to DRAM and then to flash.

Well I would like to be able to play roms of the other 64DD games, not just the "mother" disks. Where exactly do you live subbie? If we lived close enough I would be more then happy to drive the unit to you and let you get the info you need from it. Im just worried about it breaking. I got mine off ebay for about 550 bucks.

Have you tried purchasing one off ebay before? or are trying yahoo because they are much cheaper?

If theres anyway I can help you out by doing the "probing" for you or anything please let me know. Im more then willing to help get emulation online for this great system.

Just going to wait and pray I get one off yahoo.

Sucks one was just up for a full unit, games & alot of stuff with a buy it now for 32,000 yen (almost $300). Someone got to it already. :(

There is a unit with box & randnet disc ending to tomorrow that is currently at 20,000 yen. I have a company that is going to make a 32,500 yen bid for me and see if by chance I can win it.

Hopefuly if I am sucessfull and get somewhere I can just get people to help donate a few games for dumping. Atleast this should help me get emultation going (providing i win).

all i can say is, dont give your DD away. I did it 3 years ago to support a emulator called "Nemu". the co autor of Nemu with the name "LaC" wanted to do emulation and dumps. i gave him my DD and all my games... i never saw it again.
he wrote in some forums that he gave it back but that never happens. i lost 600Euro!
I dont know subbie. maybe he is a good guy and you can trust him...

well, from my small experience with him I say his a good fellow
but personally it wouldn't be the person I send the item to, I would be worried about. It's the post office I don't trust! They've already lost my favorit basket shoes and a MD player I bought in a auction. >=/

I understand that it sucks. I've been ripped off in the past with a guy I was going to trade a dreamcast & tons of games for a ps2.

Anyways personaly i would prefer to buy one vs borrow one. I just have to wait and pray it happens soon.

Ok thats cool. Its not that I dont trust you or anything. Like I said I was more worried about the DD breaking rather then it getting stolen. I hope you win it. Afterwards if theres anything I can do I would be more then happy to help. I dont have but 5 games though. I have the Randnet Disk, 3 mario artist disks, and Doushin the Giant (spelling???)

Anyway good luck, also I just checked and there are 2 DD units on ebay right now. I think both are in the UK or europe though.

Hmm... I could've sworn there's already a dumped DD rom.

    Mario No Photopie?

IIRC, only sound is emulated when played on Project64. Nothing else runs.

I sure hope you will be able to acquire one of these units someday subbie! You could possibly try out that Mario rom...

Mario No Photopie (Mario's photo shop?) is not a 64DD game. The 9 (+1)released DD games are Doshin 1 and 2(quite rare), a golf game, F-zero Xpansion Kit, Sim City 64, 4xMario Artist, and lastly the Randnet Disk.

regarding Nemu and LaC, that is a shame. Did he at least disclose his progress to you?

Suposetly a few dumps exsist but the chances of getting your hands on them are pretty much imposible. So they will probably need to be redumped by someone else yet what is the point when there is no basic DD emulation. :p

Also could Mario No Photopie just be a dump of one of the n64 carts that came with the mario art tools?

a DD image would not be anything like a n64 rom image and would not run or load in any emu.

Mario No Photopie is not DD related as far as i know.
It has only a special save chip inside and that cause problems with emulation.

Btw: subbie, you are from Montreal right? if you want to get my DD, it also went to Montreal. The guy should be there somewhere i still have the address. You can go kick his butt and use my DD for you Project :D

    http://page8.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/h38409648

clegajapan is a service i use to buy off yahoo. So I think I just won a 64DD finaly. And for less then $200 (before shipping & their service fees). So it should be less then $300. Yay, now to buy a n64.

lac moved. he is an ex coworker.

let me know if you are having touble finding a 64 (although you shouldnt) around here they are so common that I have 4 and my uncle has about 9. We get them at yard sales and thrift shops for about 2-8 dollars each lol. So we preaty much buy up anything video game related when we find it. We have found many expansion packs that way to :) I have 3 and he has 4.

I hope you get some emulation going. I love playing the mario artist games but I never did much because I didnt want to damage my unit.
Do you think you will get cart and disk emulation going togather? Like for F-Zero where it requires a cart and a disk?
