Why did it take me 16 years before I decided to get an N64. Well emulating that controller is a bitch and.....well I never liked the controller. But I figured I have this 12 socket power strip I might as well fill it. So here's the thing, I want an N64 So I can on the real hardware play Sin and Punishment, Mario Kart 64, and Star Soldier 64, and MACE maybe MK4 and KI gold. The N64 has a lot to offer me BUT THAT CONTROLLER UGH So Pretty I wanted to ask, what 3rd party N64 controllers Improve on Nintendo's Eroding what were they thinking Abomination unto the gaming lord? I hear YOBO's controllers are decent, what else?
Yeah those look awkward too due to the D-pad placement. Then again I guess if I wanted to use a D-pad I'd use a standard controller.
I don't think they look awkward at all. I haven't used one yet, but they seem to be very similar to the GameCube-controller and that's one of the best controllers ever made in my opinion. Also I can't remember when I ever had to constantly use the d-pad in an N64 game.
well personally i think the n64 controller was great, just needs to be held correctly and you need to get used to it if you are normally using playstation sytle controllers, i remember when i 1st got a N64 ny friends had trouble getting the hang on the controller but once we did, the goldeneye and duke nuke 64 sessions were epic. alot of hate out there for the n64 pad but i loved it. them hori ones look weird, why is the d-pad in the middle dont think i could use them. back in the day i had a super pad 64 which was slightly different shape but same setup, there's probably some gamester LMP controllers out there for it. but imo best way to play N64 games is with a N64 controller
You are ignoring the fact that only a few games actually used the D-pad at all. It was pretty much useless. The Hori Minipad 64 is awesome; I think it ranks up there with the best controllers of all time. I think the analog stick, while very similar to the GC analog stick, is actually better than the GC one. It's bigger, and it has a bigger range of motion. You don't know how awesome these controllers are until you actually use one. They make playing almost every N64 game so much more enjoyable. They're very good looking too. They can be a tad pricey, but they're totally worth it. The one criticism I have is that I wish they were a bit wider. They're pretty small as far as width. However, it doesn't really bother me once I start playing. It might bother someone with very large hands.
You can count on both hands the number of games which seriously used the d-pad, though. Even games like Yoshi's Story, a primarily 2D side scroller, don't use the d-pad. I have like 55 games for my N64. The only ones which really use the d-pad to good effect are MK Trilogy and KI Gold. I think Turok uses it too, but as a crappy alternative to the stick.
Well, for the few games that do use the d-pad you can still use the official controller. For everything else you can use the Hori.
Imo its one of the best 3rd party N64 controllers and if you hate the original controllers layout its worth a shot these things are pretty solid and once you get used to the slightly different layout of buttons ( wont take too long ) it even has a metal joystick compared to the normal N64 controllers very solid stuff ! only complaint from me is the different layout of buttons but its probably one of the strongest controllers in durability for the console i also think the Makopad 64 is a different version of the same controller however its slightly more expensive
the superpad 64 is a good choice. it was the only 3rd party controller for any console i played that i actually liked.
Use a Wii and the virtual console. Emulates fine and you have many good controller options if you really want real hardware though, I recommend the first party controller simply due to the fact it's really not that bad once you get adjust to it.
You can always use a Gamecube pad with this one http://www.raphnet-tech.com/products/gc_to_n64_adapter/index.php?category=Adapters
Depends on the game really, the c buttons are on a stick on the GC. Which works better for some N64 games.
