According to Kotaku (http://kotaku.com/snk-orders-neogeo-x-maker-to-end-production-and-stop-se-1441541889) SNK has forced Tommo to stop making and selling the Neo Geo X system (for anyone who forgot, it's the one that emulated Neo Geo games and looked like one). Thoughts?
A real shame. However Tommo could still fight Playmore since they properly have a license. Theres a posting on NeoGeoFreak's facebook supporting Tommo and that they went through the same thing. https://www.facebook.com/NeoGeoFreak/posts/545124572222678?notif_t=like
didn't hear anything good about the neo geo x gold so not bothered really, good idea but seems poorly put together
Maybe SNK/Playmore were pissed off by the poor state of the emulation used. It was awful, let's be honest. My Android phone runs Neo Geo games perfectly and that's not a dedicated devicve for the console. Even a PSP can run Neo Geo perfectly. I would say this is why they have lost the license. SNK/Playmore are probably afraid the basic Joe on the street would think that the Neo Geo is a pretty awful system.
I was surprised by the news. I hope that something good can come out of it though, it's sad to see such a classic company have something happen like this.
the "classic company" is the one who pulled the plug. The only one hurt in this is Tommo, and I can understand SNK's reasoning. The NeoGeoX sold poorly once reviews came out.
Well, I would think one of the worst aspects is that the NGX wasn't really a "dedicated device", despite the presentation and packaging; IIRC, it was essentially one of those cheap Dingoo (or whatever) multimedia devices, but with the NG emulator forced as the interface. Well, that and, as you said, SNK was probably pissed about the fact that Tommo didn't even bother to make a better emulator, instead relegating to the default shitty emulator found in those multimedia players. Honestly, I say good riddance to bad garbage.
I'm surprised anyone would reply with anything other than "Good, it was a huge pile of shit". If you want proof of that, you can watch this video by the best reviewer:
official announcement: JPN: http://www.snkplaymore.co.jp/pdf/131003_1.pdf USA: http://www.snkplaymoreusa.com/termi...t-between-tommo-inc-and-snk-playmore-usa-corp
it was a great idea executed poorly, you even had to buy new games for the updated firmware or something. I would have bought one if it was worth a shit, but I guess I'll stick with wii VC releases.
I am pretty sure there was legal issues involved, most likely SNK/Playmore did not want to be associated with this anymore and took this as an opportunity to revocate their license. Maybe it should be reminded that it was early discovered that the Neo Geo X was in fact using open-source kernel / emulators (Open Dingux + Final Burn Alpha), very likely without authorizations from copyright owners (FBA license even has a non-commercial clause) but was also packed with a bunch of other Dingoo emulators (SNES, MD, PS1, etc), and even PS1 BIOS http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=31&threadid=92018 They found a cheap way to make a lot of cash from the actual retrogaming hype thanks to the "official" SNK logo and I think they got what they deserved
For the record, the Neo Geo X uses a hacked/stripped-down version of Final Burn Alpha (which did not run Neo Geo games too well on the original 336 MHz Dingoo) running on a hacked Dingux (linux for the Dingoo, made by the community), without crediting the authors of Dingux and FBA or at least respecting GPL. The original Dingoo runs µc/os2 and the Neo-Geo emulator it included was actually VERY decent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc0O5F-xHjA Wouldn't have been too hard for Tommo/Blaze to code a proper emulator for either Dingux or µc/os 2, they decided to steal the work of others instead and cripple it, not unlike the shitty genesis handhelds (e.g. the Dingoo version of FBA had no problems with shitty refresh rate). SNKP pulling the plug serves them right imo. Just can't see the Dingoo getting knocked down, it was an awesome device for it's time and what it can do with a 336 MHz MIPS CPU and 32 MB of RAM is pretty amazing. edit: Well, pretty much everything I said was said in the post above already, should read threads to the end before posting.
I read on the pandora forums that they are stopping production of that as well and that what they have left (refurbished units) are being sold off. That was a decent emulator handheld except for the steep price. The advantage was the built in keyboard was great for computer game emulation and the processor speed.
