But this isn't SNK hardware. It's a shitty messed up version of a cheap Chinese handheld called the Dingo. Nothing at all to do with SNK. I could print official looking SNK Neo Geo logos on to my phone to make it as official SNK hardware as the Neo Geo X. Honestly, save your money and buy some real SNK hardware in the shape of the MVS. Cheaper games and way more cooler!
It's true that it's not really SNK hardware but it is licences by them rather than dodgy rom emulation on other machines. i didn't really fancy the NeoGeo store on PSN either. I'm quite happy with the X, I haven't really got a point of reference with SNK consoles so even if the emulation is bad, I don't notice it. Most of the games that I play on the X would be horrendously expensive to buy in cart form for the actual machines and the handheld part of the Neogeo X does feel like the NGP with its clicky stick haha.
Officially licensed is so important as this makes it as close to official hardware as you are likely to get from a company such as SNK playmore and as such is very much something to do with SNK. As much as videogame fans hold them in high regard their business model/ethic has never really worked, as admirable as it was to produce arcades for the home, it is not financially viable for the large majority of people. Buying an MVS and going through the process of consolizing it is so much effort that again anyone who is not technically minded would have to buy an already consolized set-up which are always expensive as well. I agree that this is a great way to play the games but if you like nice console design, boxes and artwork for example a consolized MVS is not really going to do it for you in much the same way the NG X has no boxes for games etc. Buying an AES for between £150 - £200 with perhaps one cheap game then buying a multi-cart for £150 or so could be a way to go but to suggest a multi-cart against an emulating system is still a bit off as they are not legitimate and are certainly not licensed products from SNK. If people are so anti emulation and such big Neo Geo fans they should only buy the official games and pay the ££££s for the pleasure. Once again I have to say that the product was good enough for SNK to allow it in the first place but now there is a negativity around it they want to pull back. Here's an idea why don't SNK Playmore make something themselves and release it? oh that's right because they don't have the money or the wherewithal to make it happen that's why. It's strange that this system provokes such strong feelings for people (myself included) where the handheld Genesis and Master Systems do not. I think this is down to two things: cost plain and simple and exclusivity. I agree the machine is priced very high BUT we do not know the amount of money being taken by SNK for the licence. Sega will licence anything to anyone so are probably comparatively cheap (I have underpants with sonic on them from Primark for goodness sake!) thus the hardware is also cheap. The exclusivity factor comes in as the Neo Geo is still held aloft to this day as a piece of videogame exotica that only the 'true' videogame connoisseur will own or know of and the NG X goes against that. Unlike the universally popular or 'common' Genesis and Master System consoles which most people would have heard of. I understand that the emulation is not the best in certain games on NG X but it could be improved with firmware updates etc if given time rather than being shot down. just my 2 cents as they say
But it won't be. They ended the project/product. Also the Sony PSP emulates NeoGeo reasonably well, and has many other uses too. It's a better buy than the NeoGeo X. The idea behind the NeoGeo X was not a bad one at all. But the implementation was poor. There is no reason you couldn't have had a portable machine with high quality emulation, with a docking station, etc. But they screwed that all up.
If they have indeed ended the project/product as it appears then I assume the amount of negative press will certainly have not helped in the decision to can it or not. I had a psp full of emulators and it was okay just a real pain getting stuff on it hacking, avoiding update from new games etc etc but yes the emulation seemed pretty good. I think if you look at it logically Tommo is not big enough a company to make a dedicated handheld from scratch and neither are SNK so... They used an off the shelf system in essence and dressed it in a much nicer case. They made a dedicated Dock for the system to make it look like an AES which was a nice touch as was including a replica NG stick. This whole venture would have been made on a shoestring budget in comparison to the big industry players so under the circumstances I think they did pretty well. If I wanted an emualtion machine I would buy a JXD or the like as it looks well designed but I wanted a dedicated machine that plays one format only I guess I am old skool like that. I also appreciated the fact it was licensed with the branding etc etc as that really sold it to me and i still like to play on it and still like looking at it too! Anyhoo it seems like it will be dead in the water soon once any legal wranglings have been dealt with. SNK will have made a nice little bit of cash from it and I am happy that it actually came out its better that it exists than if it wasn't released.
I really wanted a Neo Geo X when they were in development before release, but then I heard they weren't going to be using the original screen size ratio, I knew something was fishy then and there.... I mean why would Neo Geo knowingly release their old games in the wrong aspect ratio! Either way I really liked the idea of the controller replica the deluxe edition came with, if I saw one for $40 or less I'd probably get it just to mess with
I really liked the hardware design the NGX had, even if it was obviously inspired by the iPhone 4. I hope they reuse it for a more powerful Android handheld. I want that clicky stick!
If it is indeed dingoo compatible. Why should it not be possible hacking it, and then basically have a faster dingoo compatible handheld ? Or am I too far-fetched in my mind with that thought ?
Given how easily it was hacked, I wouldn't be surprised if they could get it to run whatever the Dingoo ran.
Same here, but then again if the real SNK had anything to do with the Neo Geo X, I bet it would have had a 4:3 screen! Here's hoping some clicky stick makes its way back onto consoles I want a drop in clicky stick for my 3DS! Regarding the Dingoo posts I am waiting until the NGX is cheap enough then getting one to hack
I disagree I think that sourcing affordable screens is part of the deal whether SNK were properly involved or not and I imagine finding non 'widescreen' screens for sale that are newly manufactured and of proven/decent quality would be quite difficult now. For example it is now all but impossible to buy new 4:3 televisions CRT or LCD. If the venture is over (not 100% confirmed yet) hopefully tech types will be able to hack it and improve any issues that people may have with the machine although I would have no interest playing any other games on it apart from Neo Geo ones
It's still being produced! For now at least (I'd get them before you can't any more or they are super expensive). Xploder are also planning on selling these Jail Break tools that let you play a bunch of different games: http://www.xploder.net/products/234/NGX-Tools-for-Jailbreak-of-NEOGEOX.htm If you haven't picked one up it's a good collectable and awesome to re-live your memories as a kid on.
