Do nes/famicom games use any of the "composite effect" techniques?
If they do use them , you miss all that if you upgrade with this rgb board, right?

    ^^^^^^

A few do but i think colorful and crisp rgb goodness outweights it.

The only composite effect I know whose sole purpose is not about making everything look worse or blurred is dithering.
    Any other I should know?

^ here is a classic example, notice the waterfall in the background

RGB on the left, composite on right

    or this nes example:

(images from the megadrive and nes sections here: http://www.chrismcovell.com/gotRGB/screenshots.html )

Didn't knew about them either until a year or so back, they have to do with shading and stuff that mixes colors to create gradients, still they are nice.
I did test with the water in Sonic1 like in the shots, it does look like transparency effect :D

Yeah those are pretty much Dithering, or variants. It is a compromise I guess.
But the shimmering artifacts on the Composite NES or so terribly ugly that I will chose to ditch composite any day.
Personally Im using S-Video on most of my consoles atm. Including my RGB NES.

Tons of games make use of it. SMB and the original Contra are some very popular examples of this. That said... I don't really have any problem with missing out on composite blur. If a game really looks bad without it for some reason I can always witch back to composite. I still prefer the sharp rigid picture :) Also AFAIK there is no getting on a list or preordering one of the next batch, as far as I'm aware it's more check viletim's site frantically until it gets back in stock and hope you get one then ;)

Well, I got impatient and installed the thing into my Famicom. So far I've only got to try composite, but the difference to the built-in composite is like day and night. No jailbars, sharp, bright, brilliant.

    Hahahahaha.

I did the installation a little differently (left the PPU on the board, lifted the right pins, wires wires wires), I wanted to make sure it worked before I put it all together. Composite meant one wire.

So hold your horses, it'll get the treatment it deserves soon enough!

What's a good game to compare the palettes on? We can select "Natural" "Improved" or "Garish". With "Garish" being the palette from the PC10 PPU.

    I've got:

    SMB1 & 3
    Megaman 2 & 5
    Xevious
    Metal Gear
    Dragonball Z Gaiden サイヤ人絶滅計画
    Dragonball Z 2 激神フリーザ
    Space Invaders
    Transformers Mystery of Comvoy
    Thexder
    Taito Chase HQ
    Maniac Mansion

Here's a scene I think illustrates the effect well:

Natural - Looks exactly like PPU generated composite, but uber sharp of course
    [IMG]

Improved - For most games, this seems to be a rather nice mode to use. Especially here, it makes the brickwork look a bit more earthy.

Garish PC10 mode - Why yes, those ARE neon purple bricks!
