There is a new GC Hack Rumor floating around... Yes, Yes... I know there has been alot of BS Floating around about this before! I'm just passing the info onto you guys.. :axe: C & P From PS2OWNEZ.COM About a year ago, it was rumored that the Origa Team was close to releasing a Game Cube mod-chip, however, that didn't end up amounting to much publically. At the moment, this new Game Cube mod-chip rumor claims that it supports iSOS of the same region as the console. On the downside, apparently there are still problems present with the decryption and burning of the images... but thus far it can bypass the barcode 100% the developer states. (Check your current favorite console sites for more info.) I HOPE THIS PUPPY FINALLY GETS HACKED!!! Time will tell... :drinkers: Here are some Pics. http://www.comuocio.net/Gamecube/modchip/modchip.jpg http://www.comuocio.net/Gamecube/modchip/dvd.jpg http://www.comuocio.net/Gamecube/modchip/debugg.jpg Interesting Forum Thread by the hardware guys over at gcdev.com: http://www.gcdev.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=771&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
. one question. How do you burn into 8cm disc? miniCD-R only holds less than 200MB from memory and GC disc has much higher capacity? still mighty cool! cheers
. actually tested GC emulator with Ikaruga ISO and it seems to run ok. still nothing beats to play readl disc on big screen... cheers
Re: . Just take the top off the cube and use a normal dvd. contents description will be in the same place if it's the same size.
I'm pretty sure this is a hoax, because I doubt the unit would read even the mini-DVD discs. The Gamecube discs are of a format developed exclusively for the console by Matshushita, and as far as I know are unlike anything out there. Apparently the discs use a DVD-like compression, but they aren't true DVDs. So I'm not sure how one would hack it, and for now I'm thinking this is just fun internet rumors, but I'm willing to be proven wrong...
On top of that, the discs spin backwards than a normal DVD drive. So if you burn it the regular way, then the DVD drive in the GC won't read it. BTW, the disc is a true DVD, just small and made differently so that they can be read properly on the GC. But as a result for being made differently, I heard that the storage capacity decreases.
. i believe Xbox also spin its disc backwards as well... wonder it's the same with PS2... anyway I've played with GC emulator and it seems to be decent enough as long as you have high-spec PC. for the mod chip don't see the need really as FreeLoader does it already although it's not 100%... cheers
DJ898: XBox and PS2 discs both spin the same way as a PC disc does, because if they spun in an opposite direction, they would not be readable in a normal PC. MadHatter: I'm not sure what the deal is on the Gamecube disc spin direction, as I thought as well that the discs are spun in the opposide direction as a PC disc, and I even heard someone say something that they are read from the outside in. I'm not sure how true any of that is, but I am sure the discs are not mini-DVDs. A mini-DVD disc has a capacity of 1.4GB, whereas the Gamecube discs are 1.5GB - a small difference to be sure, but like I said, it isn't really a DVD. It was a proprietary format developed by Panasonic/Matsushita specificially for the Gamecube that uses DVD-compression, or a variation thereof, but it's not a mini-DVD. A single telling point is the lack of a DVD or DVD-ROM logo on the GC discs - if they were standard DVD media, even DVD mini, they would bear the label like XBox and PS2 games do.
*opens gamecube with game in to check* they spin the right way round, but are read from the opposite direction to normal data discs, either inside to out, or outside to in, cant remember which.
To clear up some of the confusion... NO... The Gamecube drive does NOT spin backwards. Yes... The Gamecube can technically read DVDs. The laser wavelength used in the gamecube is close to DVDs 11 Wires is a reasonable estimate from the Modchip creator This Modchip attacks the gamecube in 2 different ways. 1: It keeps the Gamecube from reading the Barcode reigon on the disc. 2: It allows to gamecube to read the ISO-9660 File System that we use on DVDs.
Not to diss Phiber, as it's relevant info, but... Am I the only one that really doesn't care about their machine getting hacked? The only one worth the time was the Xbox b/c it opens the doors to emulation heaven. It always seems like WAAAY to much time and effort to hack, then get the games from shday sources and play them. I don't even have enough time to play the games I can afford.
Xbox emulation I really don't see the need to emulate everything on an Xbox. It's just a PC with a Celeron 733 and a Geforce 3 based GPU. Why don't developers spend time on making emu's and various homebrew for more proprietary consoles like the Gamecube. I'd also take a PC for emulation over the Xbox anyday. You can buy PS to PC converters etc if you really want the controller (or you can mod your own). You can also hook up a PC to your TV if you really want and play them on the big screen.
A few reasons: -Sometimes people want to sit on a sofa or somewhere other than their computer chair to play their old school games -Get some use out of their X-box -I have a 32" TV... my monitor is only 20" The reason people don't (or shouldn't) work on emulating proprietary systems like the GC is b/c they're brand new and games are readily available from just about any game store.
. Yep! My PC has 15" LCD whereas I can play NeoGeo MetalSlug on 42" screen lying on the sofa thanks to the wireless pad. Also sound is much better coming out of HT speaker setup than tiny speakers built-in LCD... cheers
