Yeah, and I'm sure you've never copied a CD (music or data) before/own originals of all your titles/never installed Kazaa,emule,mIRC,NGs/chipped a console..... Get Real/a Life/Laid... :Hangman: I don't want this to become a piracy flame war, but.. I want to be able to make backups, and if thats at the cost of big N, TOO BAD... The GC is already heading towards my case of no return, I even have a nice spot cleared for it next to my Dreamcast/Saturn/Snes/Nes/TG16/Etc... The PC software industry has been dealing with it for YEARS! AND YOU DON'T SEE THEM DENYING THEIR CUSTOMERS THE RIGHT TO BACKUP THEIR SOFTWARE! Its you LEGAL right! NEVER FORGET: Just because its a game that you don't put in your PC.. ITS STILL JUST SOFTWARE!!! I work hard for my money and I'll be damned if some game company wants to keep me from protecting my hard earned money... All I ask is that they give me a cheap reliable way to backup my investment.. Give me 2 copies of the game... I don't care, just let me back it up, Give me a way to protect my investment!!! AND I ---DO NOT--- CONSIDER USING THE BBA & PSOload A REAL METHOD OF USING MY BACKUPS IF MY ORIGINAL IS DESTROYED! And I know your going to say.. "all you have to do is send the damaged disk back to big N and they will replace it".. yeah, but it costs $$$ and I sent Super Mario Sunshine back, and ---NEVER--- got a replacement.. I have dumped a copy of all my Romz/CD/DVD images to 110/220 GB SDLT Tapes and keep them in my fireproof safe. And on a side note: I don't feel any guilt in TESTING a game before I buy it, I BUY ALL THE GAMES THAT I FEEL ARE DECENT QUALITY... All the others go straight to the recyling bin... AGAIN, Congrats to the mod chip makers!! :smt023 :smt033
I hate to say it I'm not against back-ups but I am against rom wh0r35. I myself have burned a few DC iso's but then again they were all expensive titles (by my standards $40+ for used title) that cost too much money to just throw away if I didn't like the game. Needless to say I bought the ones I liked. As I think we all know the GC scene is not what you would call exciting (besides Warp Pipe) and this could really boost the scene so I welcome it with open arms.
Somehow it's really hard to take someone who's creating a modchip solution for a console at face value when they talk about making backups of legally owned software. And just on account of the connotation, using the phrase "romz" when you're arguing legal, archival copies of software doesn't lend a terribly large air of credibility to your actions, either. As for protecting all your valueable software, it's called insurance. It's legal, AND it protects your hardware. For in the unlikely and purely hypothetical event that something actually DOES jeopardize your collection of physical media and therefore actually validate this backup nonsense, what in hell are you going to do with a backup tape in a fireproof safe - is it going to play itself? Taking steps to retain the hardware to actually run the media on seems like a wiser way of "protecting your investment" than trying to hack a console to run burnt backups. Assuming, hypothetically again, that the focus is for archival purposes... I'm not sure on this, as it's 3:30 am, but do any of you guys know the original purpose of the backup provision of copyright law? I always thought it started as a way to preserve the information on fragile or damaged media, not just to give people an excuse to make 2 copies of every thing they own. Say, does my right to a legal backup mean that someone should provide me with a second computer or TV at their expense, in case something goes wrong with mine? :smt043
I am a huge fan of try before you buy,I mean most pc game publishers give you a thirty day trial of a game, even Seag did it with the pc version of PSO. Console publishers rarely do and I for ne feel really cheated if a buy a game and it is total shit.Sega Rally 2 on the dc instantly springs to mind at forty quid. I however experience massive problems when trying to find Isos and shit for this purpose, the edonkey files never work neither do the kazza ones. This is not a plea for roms or iso's before the mods jump down my throat.I just think that Sony,Nintendo and Microsoft should provide trial versions of games like the pc factories do.The one time it did happen for the Gamecube it seemed to be a massive success(Biohazard zero). After that I thought...great...I hope to see more of this but then it has never happened again.
Let me start off my saying, I am a Network Engineer for over 15 years for a company that sits in the 90th percentile in Fortune's GLOBAL 500 company list... The last 3 years have been spent as an IT Manager at our Datacenter. I work in a datacenter that supports 3700+ servers (Win, Sun, Linux, AS400 & OS390 Mainframe). We also hold about 190+ TB (Yes, Thats TERABYTES) of ONLINE storage, spread accross multiple EMC Symetra/Clariion SAN boxes. One area where I spend a lot of my time is backups, as you can imaging backing up 190+ TB on a nightly basis is not easy. When I state my opion, it comes from YEARS of industry experience. Backups are life, we carry Insurance yes, but Backups are the most import part of computing. Insurance does replace the Data itself that my company needs to keep its market edge. As at home, my home owners insurance will pay me for damage to my consoles and Software (games) that I run on them, but it in NO WAY means I get a replacement. Nor does it mean that the insurance company gives me the current STREET VALUE. Nor does it compensate me for MY TIME that I spent collecting my Software (games). I am not eligible for "Replacement Cost Coverage" Homeowners insurance due to the fact that my house in on the beach. Short of moving, the only REASONABLE option is that I have is to make backups. This happens every day, My company is a Microsoft Select Customer. Meaning, we DO NOT recieve hardcopies of every piece of software we purchase from microsoft. And I'm sure their are some members here who have MSDN subscription that are DOWNLOAD ONLY subscriptions. With all due respect Greatsaintlouis, alot of people feel the need to act cool and refer to ROM dumps as Romz, but that in no way reflects on his motives. Umm....... Read what I said about insurance, as for every company that a sizable IT infrastructure, they make backups... I dont know about fiber or yourself, but I play my games. I don't just polish my console and make them all lot pretty. I like to use what I have collected, at the some time this does put wear and tear on my media, Having 1 wife, 2 kids, and a dog who loves to chew on N64 cartridges doesnt help my situation. The purpose of the law was to protect consumers and to protect software companies all at the same time. It affords consumers the right to retain a copy of their legal purchased software for archival purposes and protects software companies from Proliferation of illegal copies. You may want to look at the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). But as far anyone is concerned, the law is on the side of the person making the backup. How do you figure its at their expense? Fiber and myself would gladly pay extra for a backup. And as fiber said above, I have also returned Software (Games) to Nintendo of America and never returned a new original or my original. So where does it leave me the consumer? I believe that Fiber has the right idea, but at the same time I do feel that Nintendo of America needs some protection from pirates. And Fiber is completely right in the fact that these games are nothing more than software. In addition, i dont feel the Phantasy Star Online exploit is a viable alternative. I would like to see a way to backup/protect my property and lookward to the works of the modchip team. -TCC PS: Greatsaintlouis... I do know how to use the quote button, and thanks for EDITING my last post with a UNWARRENTED childish comment... I though moderators were suposed to set the example for the rest of the board. :Hangman:
Question for anti rom/backup people If you paid hmm I don't know $200+ for a sealed copy of Radiant SilverGun would you open it? Same goes for most out of production games. If I had the option I would aquire back ups of all my games and never open the original copies so as to retain the value. It does not harm anyone when I have paid for the game already and make a back up so I don't have to open/damage it. Most of my PS2 games are scratched to hell thanks to my younger brother who puts the discs in the wrong cases and leaves the discs of the carpet!
More news: Seems the GS Modchip makers have opened a website. Checkit out! http://gcc.modchip.sm/ FYI TCC1942 my name isn't "Fiber" is Phiber.. Thnaks for the vote of support too.. :drinkers: Cheers!
I hardly think backups of one's game collection and backing up data corporate data that can't be replaced are even REMOTELY close to the same thing, so let's not even go there. And I am well aware of MSDN download only subscriptions, as I have had one of my own through my school. In my case, the software (just XP Pro and Visual Studio.NET) was available as downloadable CD images that had to be burned to disc to be useful in any manner. HOWEVER, this is software that is meant to be burnt to a CD as the distribution format is not that of physical media. This isn't EVEN a relevant argument as pertaining to the topic at hand here, which is the development of a modchip to circumvent Gamecube copy-protection measures in order to "make backups of legitimately owned software." If you can't see how this just screams piracy waiting to happen, then you're just really really naieve, or trying to pull the wool over our collective eyes. Either way, this argument isn't really going anywhere, as a lot of people here seem fairly convinced that this "backup" method is an essential right as a Gamecube owner or something, so I've pretty much said my peace. As for your quote being edited - make sure you know who the guilty party is before slinging accusations. In this case, I did indeed edit the quote, and while my response may have been unwarranted (I'm not sure how you get childish out of it but whatever :smt017 ), there is something to be said for a first-time poster quoting in its entireity a post as long as Phiber's (and being immediately above your post, at that) and following it with a single comment - that's usually bad etiquette wherever you go. Metal_4evr: The RSG question is a bit rhetorical, as I'm not mad enough to pay $200 for it or any other game that was met with a normal release. For the sake of argument however, yes I would open it. I buy games to play them, and I'm aware that they are (especially CD media) subject to scratches and other damage that could render the game unplayable. I do the very best that I can to prevent that by taking good care of them, and that's all I really can do. I'm not saying being able to backup your software and data is wrong, however, it appears that I'm the only one not fooled by this new Gamecube modchip and what it will ultimately be used for.
Some very valid points have been made. GSL - I do agree. This GC chip is for piracy, and piracy alone. No point anyone trying to blag the 'backup' argument. GC is the only console so far with no decent way to play copied games. Now, supposedly they've hacked it. Well done, damn good bit of hackery and very impressive, but it's blatantly for piracy. However, I do own backups of expensive games. Radiant Silvergun is one example. I did not obtain a backup of RS till I owned the game, but as soon as it popped through the door, I d/l'd an ISO. Why? Cos I don't want a freak occurence to happen and my disk to be ruined. The original (absolute 100% perfect condition with spine and all the bits) sits in my display cabinet (along with a few other 100% perfect rare/expensive Saturn/PCE games and my vintage/new Indiana Jones action figures and Kubrick). I play my games lots, and i'd hate to inadvertantly scratch the RS disk and for it to be unuseable. I take great care with all my games, they go back in their boxes/cases after play. But sometimes random shit occurs and I'd hate to loose the cash I spent on RS. Which is why RS, Battle Garegga, Dracula X etc.. are in the display cabinet and backups live on my game shelf (with perfect cover scans, can't tell its a backup unless u open the case and see the CD-R in it). And, in a month when Ginka Fukei Densetsuki Sapphire (PCE Arcade CD) arrives, that'll go in the cabinet and a backup will live on the shelf. AS far as I'm concerned any game that is easily obtainable cheaply, such as PS/2, GC and Xbox games need no backups. But old rare games do need backing up so my investement (and fun) isn't ruined, should the worst happen. Any Saturn or PCE CD game worth £75 - £100 + gets backed up straight away, and the original goes in the display cabinet.
I agree with everything you say here GSL.Comparing corporate data backup to backing up a Gamecube disc is just pure nonsense. Let's be 100% honest and serious here, those who want to use this chip for backup purposes are in a very very small minority,no matter how important you think your case may be and if you can't see the piracy end of the argument you are indeed being very naieve.I mean I am no angel and have been guilty of breaking the law with the odd backup here and there but for me backups are not what I want.I want to have a collection of jap games, all boxed and all mint. It's about the whole import collcting scene for me and being part of communities such as this. The times I have used backups is to try a game before I take the plunge and spen 60 to 100 pounds on it.I simply wouldn't want too many ugly plain copied games with no boxes in my collection,it does not have the same feel for me.(who can forget that feeling when you recieve a rare and pristine jap game?) I do however see how this mod chip benefits to the homebrew community and see why it is a worthwhile project but not for one minute do I believe it is being inveneted for anything other than the core audience with which it will sell millions too...PIRATES! :butthead: :smt024
Obviously, without doubt the modchip WILL used for piracy, but at the same time you CANNOT ignore the legal uses of such a device. A piece of SOFTWARE should be a one time purchase, not something that you should need to repurchase in the event of damage. Its call proactive prevention... I have already lost enough stuff to damage. I lost 1/2 of my Jamma PCBs when a small leak in my roof went un-noticed for about a year. I lost a naiomi, a large quatity of SMS cartridges and a ultra rare SNK MVS 10 Slot Beta board not to mention coutless original Jamma PCBs that are unemulated... I will never have a chance to play or obtain some of these ever again, homeowners insurace gave me squat... I cannot get Replacement Cost Coverage Homeowners insurace here. I have another 12 Years on my morgage so I'm kinda stuck here for now. I copy all of my CDs and dump all the ROMs that I can with the hardware that I have, and since my little accident, I now put all of my originals in heat sealed plastic bags and some are even vacumn packed. I want to be able to pass all of my games to my son when I pass on so that he may be able to enjoy the games that I loved when I was alive, or if he wants to sell the originals. But the fact that you need to look at is that Every other system has been compromised, every other console manufacturer deals with it. Its just another cracked console... Big Deal. And quite frankly, not too many people really give a Fly'n F about the GC. The piracy WILL NEVER be anywhere nearly as high as the XBOX or PS2. I do care about the GC, but its life is running out, it came up too short from the begining an is soon heading the way of the Dreamcast.. Sigh.. Just because this device can be used for piracy, doesnt mean it will JUST be used for piracy, It will just safeguard the collectors that want to be able to play their GC until the end of time.. -TCC Greatsaintlouise... An adult would have just reminded me to use the quote button and maybe used a "please" in the sentence. I think you should go back to 5th grade with my son to refine your disfunctional social skills. For you to be agressive towards a man that you have never spoken to, and thats old enough to be your father, I would recomend that you put the controller down and go outside for a little while, maybe even toss a few brews back.. Its times like these that re-enforce why I just lurk here instead of posting.. Hard to imagine why Assembler would want you as a moderator.
I still maintain my belief that another mod chip is in no way good for gaming. I would bet that for every collector that's using it to back up rare, expensive games, theres about 1,000 people using them to steal games. Personally, I just prefer to play my originals. I don't think it's too hard to keep catostropic things from happening to your games. Just be gentle with CDs, DVDs, and other discs. All of my Saturn and DC games that I've purchased new still look it...
This argument isnt really going to go anywhere, its along the same lines of "DVD-R manufactueres promote piracy by stating 'enhanced for DVD Video and Console' on their disks" The whole grey area on copying media for your own use is best left alone. Everyone who reads something will see it slightly differently, mis-quotes and mis-interepretations are common in many legal areas.
its an shame that there are 'so many' people working on modchips for the gamecube that makes playing copys possible... and that NONE (as far as I know) are working on a nice nifty REGION free modchip :smt011
It just goes to show where the thinking of these chip developers is. As far as import solutions, the Freeloader discs seem to work well enough, and as I have an aversion to modchips anyways (they tend to eat your system) I'm perfectly happy. I do think there is some sort of region mod you can do on your system that is as simple as soldering a few wires to a 2-way switch that will get you US<->JP import freedom, but apparently this doesn't work with PAL. ---------------------Petty little crap section---------------------- Look man, if your son needs help, you help him, I'm too busy for this kind of stuff. What would have me too, anyways? Teach him how it's uncool to go off on a random person you've never met just because they had a bit of fun at your expense with a post edit? How taking something like that and coming back with a savage personal attack is in no way something one should do? I'm really sorry man, what with the new job and all, but you should keep up the good work, from what I've just now seen you're setting a fine, shining example. :smt023 I'm sorry, the age card doesn't quite work on the internet like it does in real life - that whole respect-your-elders bit and such, if that's what you're getting at. Anyways, my respect was always something that was earned in the first place, but besides that, I think you may want to look up the definition of aggressive. Again, I was goofing around and edited a lengthly post, but I thought it was..... ah yes, it was you indeed who turned that into a personal attack, I do believe, something about the behavior of mods and then your latest with the grand insinuations on my character. But.... errr..... I don't use the controller to type, so why would I have to set it down? Or are you relying on the ridiculous cliche that game collectors are xenophobic introverts unable to function socially in normal society? I would think someone almost "twice my age" would for one be able to see past stereotypes, especially having nothing with which to judge a character except their online writings, and for two would not assume anything about the lifestyle about said person they have never met. I could go on about how horribly incorrect you are, my avid cycling and training for fall cross country being perfect examples of things you don't know about me and just serve to make you look like an ass in your assumptions and blah blah blah, but I hardly think that's worth it. The bottom line here is, that reply was completely uncalled-for. Yes, I did indeed edit your original lengthly quote and I did put a sarcastic little comment in there. So what. I never stooped to any sort of personal attack, nor did I feel the cause to keep on you about it - it was just a damned facetious post edit for Christ's sake. Yes, it probably wasn't the best way I could have handled it - I'm an ass, but with all this shit above, you're a bigger one. Now get over it, it's done, go back to your lurking and not posting if that is what suits you better. I expect not to see any continuation of this line of discussion, if you catch my drift.
TCC1942 Cool down man, GSL was only kidding arround with you. There is no reason to start attacking people we all try to keep it resonably relaxed here without getting personal. :smt023
Yeah ,GSL was just messing around man.He is the most genuine guy you will talk too and forgives very easily.I have said some out of order shit to him before and unluck some other petty people he never held it against me.So stop being such a dick towards him it will not win you any friends on this board. Nintendomad
Can one of the mods check why I cannot log into the board on my mates AOL.It will not let me log in on this browser Nintendomad
Because AOL is a steamy pile of crap perhaps? :smt043 If the mod chip was to be released it would kill the system with piracy in the same way the Dreamcast was forced into an early grave. Personally, as a hardware hack I find it interesting. Sure they should go along and do it to show the world it can be done and to be the 1st people with mod chipped cubes, however I believe the hardware hack should not be manufacturedas it will kill the system, but also it will make the original hack more unique/special/something to be proud of & gloat about. There is no real legal use it will be used for though as NTSC 'cubes have the Jap/USA mod switches and freeloader for PAL games anyway which covers all angles of imports. That fact alone proves the device is not needed for importers. As for wanting to keep your games sealed - who gives a shit! They're games, you're supposed to play them! Why bother buying them to leave rotting on a shelf? The nintendo games also include the points system which has the voucher INSIDE the pack to get free items some which are exclusive for the points system aswell -_-
