I was gonna say exactly the same thing :)

It's one thing to criticise, but to say that all shooting games are 'exactly the same' and then bemoan the lack of new platform game doesn't really make much sense. Clearly you haven't played many 'shooting' games (shoot-em-ups) If they were all exactly the same people wouldn't buy them... well, not after they bought the first one.

Some bedroom coders have written a game for a vintage console, these people should be supported for their efforts. Take into account that they aren't being paid for what they do - they are doing it because they love that type of game and the system they coded it on.

If you are going to voice an opinion or criticise, make sure it's 'constructive criticism' - that goes down a lot better.

I think the game looks cool, but I am a sucker for any new shooter also.

Why does it cost so much money? Basically its just an unlicenced shooter game.
Something like homebrew. Am i wrong?(if i am please inform me because i don't know much about these things) Ok, i admit they did a very good jobm but 459 euros for the L.E. package is damn much.

I'm not sure if it is unlincensed, but it's not "homebrew" (=programming some simple game between lunch and the afternoon briefing) anymore. NG:DEV-TEAM is a professional developer company since 2008.

I believe it costs so much because they had to design and produce the PCBs themselves and each one will cost a considerable amount of money to make. I do hope there will be a Dreamcast-version though, and it would be reasonable because Last Hope didn't sell too bad and there are a lot of Dreamcast and shmup fans.

So anyone played this (aside from beta tester above)?

I have to say I really do like this, and will be putting in the hours. Hats off to the team.

Cool, I'm glad you enjoy it! :)
Oh and BTW: It pays to clear it using only 1 credit and with a good score. ^_^

I wrote a detailed review over at shmups.com
    http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=29984&p=591239#p591239

I think it's a really good game. Not "homebrew" or "euroshmup"-ish at all.

PS: A new video of the final version will be available for download very soon.

    Really enjoy it. :)

I posted my impressions on ng forums, but you sum it up much more succintly than I.

Glad to hear about the 1CC. I suspected as much when the game rebuked me for credit feeding. Trouble is I'm very average at shooters!

    @wheelaa
It seems the guys over at ng.com are rather suspicious about the quality and ask for more objectivity in the reviews. I think your review sums it up very nicely and after having played the game for four weeks, I can't say that the nice first impression vanishes too soon. I would do a video to proof the game's quality, but I firstly I don't want to interfere with brothers' plans of an oncoming official video release and secondly, I am not keen to show off any scoring. ^_^

I'm really looking forward to observe the highscore competition, hopefully there will be one. :)

    @rod_wod
    yeah, whatever, lol.

Did anyone test if this game works on the AES with the super converter II?

That does look pretty cool. I'd be likely to pick it up if it gets a Dreamcast release.

It's just a homebrew game designed to milk the neo geo crowd, who have more money than common sense.

If this was sold on ps2 it would be ridiculed for being unoriginal and not very good.

But because it's on neo geo, all of the sudden it's the shit.

ngdevteam went professional with their company in 08, so it's not quite homebrew anymore. I know first-hand that they try really hard to make a good game, but it's a bit tough if you have to do it all by yourself without any Ikedas in your team. If it would have been intended to be released for PS2 in the first place, it would have been an entirely different game. I think the outcome is nice and a fun game overall, much better than Last Hope anyway (which was even more expensive as a NGH version btw., but it sold out). It keeps the Neo Geo alive and isn't bad at all, that's what everyone hoped and the hopes were fulfilled.

Who actually thought we were expecting the absolute most pure genre killer that makes everyone forget about Cave, Raizing etc? And what was the alternative? Selling a technically unique MVS cart with a beautiful kit around it for like 100$ because anything else would've been too expensive since CAVE set this high gameplay standard?
I can imagine the responses on neo-geo.com: "so much for such shit! Teh Blazing Starz costs only like 25$". >_>

I think spending 450+ Euros on it only pays if you are a Neo Geo collector. A hardcore shooting gamer would prefer other games that offer more open, advanced scoring possibilities, spending that kind of money just and only for playing it is a bit much to ask.

The videos above show very poor low-skill gameplay of someone who just received it. Videos that demonstrate the scoring mechanics in stages 1-3 can be seen here, I captured them just the other day:

Yeah the initial gameplay footy I saw was pretty lame in skill.

I really want this. Vert is the best. And I'm still kicking myself for not getting Last Hope on AES when I could totally afford it and they were in stock.

turns out youre wrong, had a few goes at this last weekend and gotta say its definetly on par with blazing star (which in turn is head and shoulders above all the other shmups on NG), i thought both last hope and DUX sucked balls to be honest so was very positively surprised by this game.

did not fall for the gfx at all even tho they look very nice for the hardware. (if you dig blazing star or prehistoric isle 2 youll love the looks of thisone)
music was definetly not my cup of tea either. (trance/techno stuff)

gameplay is solid and the scoring system seems to hold up pretty well, its a lean dodonpachi variant with some medals thrown in the mix, nothing too original nor too obviously ripped off.

if youre an NG collector or a NG shmupfan its a valid purchase imo, i found it really sad that the MVS kit comes in a unique size white cardboard box and not the same brown type as all the other MVS kits, ridiculous thing to get hung up on maybe but I for one like continuity in my arcade kits...
