pal consoles work totally fine with an official component cable. i haven't tried 3rd party ones but they should work too.

try unpluggin and replugging the end to the receiver. it happens to me sometimes and the audio comes back after that. some kind of negotiation issue between the receiver and xbox i guess.

also even it has been replied here, yes most of your original pal games will work in 480p if you change your console region to NTSC. i read some games might have problems, and they work in 480i.

i don't know if there is a pal game which only supports 576i (no 480i,480p,720p or 1080i). if there is, to play this game you will have to change the display back to PAL as NTSC lacks the 576i option.

Tried unplugged and replugging the TOSLINK cable to fix the no audio issue. Still no audio. Is something broken, or do PAL Xboxs not support optical out?

They definitely do as I've used optical out on mine with a third party cable.

So maybe it's your component cable or double check the settings on your receiver.

The TOSLINK cable is the same one I use on my PS2, as in the port and setting on my AV receiver. That's why I'm confused!

Try another cable. That could be the problem. I use some strange cable that has all video mode outputs and it works for me. This cable has composite, s video, and component video as well as both stereo and the TOSLINK optical output. They seem to all be able to run at the same time on my machine. But I do have it set to NTSC so I don't know it that matters or not.

I've got another TOSLINK cable coming, maybe that will solve the issue?

Also, is the Xbox's internal clock suppose to suck this bad? If I leave the console off for a few days, I have to reset the clock when I turn it on! The console doesn't use a battery, so it's not like the rechargeable battery is worn out like in the Dreamcast.

Pal can only go up to 480p. However if your console region is set to NTSC and the game supports 720p then it will play in 720p, it all depends on what region the console is set in.

Got another TOSLINK cable, still no audio. It's either optical doesn't work in PAL, or the component cable is faulty, and yet the red light of the optical works anyway.

Will try that after I've modded my Xbox and put it in NTSC made to be sure it's not that optical is disabled in pal mode or something.

Speaking of which, I FINALLY received my Xbox USB cable today! So I'm ready for the next step, I've got my USB cable, USB drive and exploit game, what's next?

And I get those from eurasia.nu right? When I've got them, I pop them on a USB stick, but the USB stick in the USB cable, load it to the xbox's hdd, put in agent under fire and load up the hacked save? At some point I need to install that unleashx thing HEX mentioned, right?

*EDIT* Hmmmm, when I connect the USB drive to the Xbox and try to load it up to erase it, it starts playing dubstep. That is, the console makes this weird noise (it sounds like the "confirm" sound being repeated) and won't open up the drive. It goes back to normal when I exit the memory menu. It behaves itself if I use a different USB stick, but I'd like to backup some of my game data on a different USB stick before I softmod it just to be safe.
