No cable is needed unless your trying to recover the eeprom, the TSOP ( Tiny Small Operating Package) is flashed via a xbox homebrew util, no usb cable is needed... Just a drop of iron then it's flashable and ready to roll... So many diffrent bioses to pick from and flash... Stick with the basic and best functions... Xecuter X2, or even M8 works great!

I run the M8+ in mine. Hardest part was trying to find a tool to flash the BIOS. Only outside difference I noticed from original on the boot screen is the Linux penguin added to the top left corner.

My version didn't come with the app in it. May have to upgrade when I get the new HDD built.

If he was having difficulty finding anything that would flash his BIOS then it's possible that he has one of the xboxes with a Winbond chip - and EvoX can't flash those either (basically, the only thing that can is the Gentoo based flasher).

It is a 1.4 with a 256K ST chip and the Conexant video encoder chip. I was able to flash it despite the problems with the Gentoox loader. Problem I couldn't get around was with LBpartitoner for cloning my old drive to the new one. Problem was I wasn't looking in the right places with the proper search terms. Oh well. I at least got it flashed. Probably use one of the other tools once I get it all working right should I want to flash it later assuming the tool works with my hardware.

That's pretty awesome, I guess that's the advantage of the Xbox being pretty much a PC in a small box :p I still need an exploit game though don't I?

That little linux sitting at the top right corner is trying to telepathly tell you to flash this bitch via telnet snap up putty and check out the manual that came with raincoat flasher util in the gamesave expliot you use to tsop flash the box with... Which yes certainly you'll need the game to use and successfully run the exploit. There's 3 or 4 diffrent games and other methods of getting this util to run / launch from a softmodded box. Even there's diffrent gamesave formats for the exploit package PAL / NTSC. I use the SC game for my region, and use this method mainly cause of raincoat, it's great and never has failed me, works with ALL TSOPS as well if it doesn't with a particualr box then you can easily add / edit into the def ID # for the TSOP chip from the box and get it done. I'm sure you could get setup with your region, able to get onto Xbins right?

I have no idea of what 90% of what you just said means :p But either way, it looks like I'll need an exploit game, I was thinking Agent under Fire?

For the component cable, I think thinking THIS ONE, it looks to have decent build quality and it's also got optical out.

Not if you hotswap but that requires you opening the Xbox and can be a bit risky since it involves unplugging the HDD while its on and connecting it to a PC while its also on
Plus it requires some good timing ^__^

    http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=332179

I have done it with all my Xbox since I don't like buying stuff to do mods if I have the option not to and so far it has worked every time but it did take practice >__<

BTW if you boot the Xbox with the Halo 2 DLC disk in the tray once its at the main menu the HDD will be unlocked
(its better then waiting at the dash praying its unlocked)

Fun Fact! - I have accidentally touched the heatsink while the Xbox was on...... I don't recommend it >__<

Just stick with a softmod using any of the game exploits out there, which is simple, fast and easy and use Chimp to clone the existing stock HD for a newer one. No need to use boot disks, taking out the Stock HD (opening up the PC to connect the IDE Bus), just do it all from the Xbox using a Molex power splitter cable.

I have recently done 3 consoles with 500GB HD's installed with zero issues.

If you wanna go Tsop flashing then its fine, if you know what you're doing, yet if you want a easy way of playing backups and emulators, soft mod mod all the way. Like anything, mess around with the C & E installation files = mess up the softmod. Sticking to FTP' games and Emulators to F/G partitions should pose no threat.

That's my opinion on the matter.

Fireaza, these guys are sending you around the twist.

Simply install a softmod (I recommend AUF exploit over the others) you should set the default dash to EVOX (this is to fasten the process of the planned TSOP). Then all you'd need to do is FTP a BIOS of your choice, I would recommend the XECUTER 2 5035 bios from eurasia. (Depending on the size of your TSOP chip, EVOX will resize the BIOS for you!). Also you'll know your XBOX version for sure as soon as the exploit takes place so wait it out before you jump into anything.

I would NOT recommend using the softmod method to upgrade the hard disk, there are chances you'll get issues in the future and you'll have to start from scratch every time. So TSOP is the way to go, IF you don't have a 1.6 that is... If you do, then I'd recommend a modchip it's just a 1 wire install anyway, like the Saturn.

So far you're on the right track, once you're closer to doing the job refer back to these notes.

Yeah, the methods they've describing sound a lot more complex than what you've described. Plus, I'm not sure my PC even has IDE :p I don't plan on storing ISOs on the HDD, so I think the default drive should be fine.

Okay, so step one is to get the USB cable, step two is to get an exploit game right?

Not when I can play the game in 1080p, with loads of anti-aliasing, in stereoscopic 3D or in 120hz if not using 3D :D

Might try my local Cash Converters, I think they have quite a few Xbox games.
