I could not hold my interest, when he began babbling about Dancing With The Stars, and shit like that. So nope nope nope, another reason why I am not interested in 3DS. It is a bloody console, where you should play games, and if you want to use a 3D camera as a start. Then add the features from the start. And a possibility of enabling a USB stick in the side of the console, so you can use the stick as a way to record a bloody longer film, than just "up to 10 minutes". That is actually one of the worst commercials I have seen, after the current Windows 7 ad, that I have seen lately. Which is just boring and pathetic.

    LOL mate, close call.

They're doing infomercials now? these fuckers are desperate!

The problem here is that Sony realized that the only way to compete with phones and tablets is quality, hence the Vita being at least twice as powerful as an iPad2 or iPhone4S and having AAA games like Uncharted.

But nintendo had it really easy these years with the Wii, which used old GC guts yet sold really good even at a price that was higher than the GC's at launch. The 3DS was their last attempt at seeing for how long people will buy their overpriced obsolete crap.

Even Apple knows brand wont keep a shit product for failing, just look at the appleTV.

What nintendo did wrong was competing with phones in terms of value rather than features since the 3DS might eventually get good games but as far as hardware goes its crap and until recently way too expensive.

Simply put, you cant get anything like the Vita for $250, but you can get a lot more than the 3DS even for $170

Actually you wont see OLED tvs for a while because making those screens in big sizes is really fucking expensive, and nobody wants to pay $25k for a 40" panel.

It has a lowres 3D screen with terrible view angles that gives people headaches, and a lower screen ripped from a cheapo chinese iphone clone that gets scratched just as easy as the one on the DS launched 7 years ago.

Just saw a new 3DS advert here in the UK highlighting the 3D camera and editing features.

Desperate much. As much as I love(d) Nintendo, they need a kick up the arse. My mobile gaming is my iPod Touch.

Not until cell phones get proper buttons.

Will never happen. Nintendo would rather go bankrupt then pull a Sega. And even Sega was about $300 million in the hole before they did that.

I swear, were you people that are predicting doom and gloom asleep during the last decade?

Mario and Mario Kart. That's all Nintendo needs. That's all Nintendo has ever needed.

Mario sticks to the same formula and because it's mario it gets awards. Any other franchise it would be called tired and worn out by now. You'd think Mario is video game Jesus or something.

The Nintendo I grew up with is dead. LONG DEAD Dead since 97.

N64 launch the start of Nintendo's decline into gimmickdom. Besides Smash Brothers, Mario Kart 64, and F-Zero X there isn't much in the way of awesomeness in this era.

And yes I am one of 12 people who don't really care for Mario 64 or OOT

I'm not counting Sin and Punishment, Awesome game but technically it's 3rd party.

Rare were basically the N64 gods and the console is worth buying JUST for their games. I love the Nintendo 64 and the Gamecube - I own the most games for them- but Nintendo.. I've just given up with them.

Mario Kart is old news. Unless they drastically improve the AI, or add something new to the formula, what's the point? That game has gotten worse every iteration since the SNES original IMHO.

Super Mario 3D Land does look awesome though.

Well, gimmickdom did technically save Nintendo as far as the console race was concerned. I do have to take my hat off to them...they gambled on the "Blue Ocean Strategy" and it paid off. The drawback now is that they have to sustain this level of innovation, and this will obviously alienate fans (as it did during the Wii era). WIll this method of thinking pay off long term, that is the question!

Then again most people bought a wii and took in the games but most games just sort of sat there So the great games everyone should be playing people weren't because of this inflated number of Non Gamers that had a Wii.

Also When was the last time Nintendo introduced an original new franchise?

I can't simply just sit here and discredit Nintendo either good games from them still trinkle out from time to time. But nothing that to me really stands out it's just a rehash of something else they've already done. Gameplay wise they hardly innovate anymore

Oh I completely agree with you on Mario Kart. The best one forever was the SNES one. No damn blue sparks and fair weapons. Not to mention coin collecting.

But regardless of how you or I feel, the fact of the matter is a single Mario Kart release today will outsell entire franchises by MS or Sony.

Technically, Wii Sports is a franchise. So uh... whenever the Wii launched.

The last interesting new franchise that I can think of was Pikmin, about a decade ago.

But like I've said elsewhere, original franchises just get you killed. Look at Sega. Barrels of new franchises every gen, most of them incredibly well designed, quirky, and fun. And as a result, these days you can find Sega out back in an alley giving out handjobs if you'll buy their latest crap.

The thing that you (and anyone else who cries "UNORIGINAL!" at Nintendo) have to understand is that Nintendo relies on their core base of fans to keep them afloat. Sure, the gimmicks propel them into the stratosphere every so often, but they need their core fans for their Gamecubes or N64s. And all Nintendo fans really want is:
    1. A New Zelda.
    2. A New 2D Mario.
    3. A New 3D Mario.
    4. A New Kirby.
    5. A New Pokemon.
    6. A New Smash Bros.

Maybe not in that order mind you.

But really, if Nintendo made a system and didn't make a single Mario or Zelda game for it, in those franchises' traditional forms, people would be flipping shit over it. No, the 100 or so people roaming the internet whining about Nintendo's lack of originality wouldn't, but they're not the ones Nintendo is trying to sell stuff to anyways. I mean, hell, people were pissed that the ART STYLE of Zelda changed a bit with Wind Waker (and then those of us who played it were pissed with all the filler at the end).

And Nintendo does do original stuff. Kirby Canvas Curse and Kirby's Epic Yarn were both incredibly original games, they just had familiar characters. Why not? Nintendo has a freakin' vault of characters. Would as many people have bought Epic Yarn if instead of Kirby the game was based around some new character? Or Mario Galaxy if instead of Mario the game was based around a robotic penguin? Not likely.

But that same core base of fans want something new. I WANT SOMETHING NEW anything new and different from Nintendo.

IF Nintendo is the Ghibli of Video games all they've been doing is put out sequels to Totoro and Castle in the Sky.

You obviously don't know many die-hard Nintendo fans. Or spend much time reading forums full of Nintendo fans when a new Nintendo system is launched. The first questions asked are when a new Mario is coming out and when a new Zelda is coming out.

Right now everyone is calling for a Majora's Mask remake on the 3DS. I've heard some express disappointment that the new Zelda Nintendo mentioned wasn't a Majora's Mask remake. Not to mention the amount of hype Super Mario 3D Land got just because the Tanuki suit came back. Nintendo brings back something from a 1988 videogame and their fanbase goes nuts. Hell, I was excited that the Koopa Kids came back in Wii New Super Mario Bros. .

And again, Nintendo still makes original games. I don't understand how you're failing to grasp this. Was Epic Yarn a traditional Kirby game? Would it have made you happier if Epic Yarn had featured a new character? If the Prince was the only playable character, would you be satisfied?

Nintendo re-uses the same characters, but they do make original games with those characters from time to time.

Though in the end, as bad as you want "something different", the fact of the matter is that a 2D Mario will sell more in a single release than entire franchises of MS or Sony, and the same can easily be said of Mario Kart games. It's just the way it is.

And you know what? That's fine. Because Super Mario 3D Land is getting stellar reviews, and there's no doubt in my mind that it will be the best platforming game to come out since Super Mario Galaxy 2. Nintendo know what they do and they do it well. They aren't Sega, and you cannot expect them to be, because they saw where innovation, creativity, and excessive originality get you.
