It says: "For cartridges with super famicom mark only"

No idea if it's real, but it doesn't really look like it is.

Why do people think this is the Nintendo/Sony proto? Just because the Sony name is on it? Here's the same pic without the Sony name. Is there anything about it that would make you think it's not just a regular SFC mod?

It doesn't prove that it's not, but it does show how people believe it is just because the Sony name is on it even tho there is no supporting evidence. Add another company name and suddenly we have a 3D0/Nintendo proto...or any other logo you'd want to add.

Now it's an old joint venture between Ford and Nintendo...

And why is the reset button down? It's a reset button, not a switch, right?

Possible reasons for this not being a case mod:

    . Headphone socket
. Professional level looking case with bodge job style modifications (power socket)
. Crappy giant white power switch on the front does not fit with rest of design.

Lack of CD drive doesn't prove or disprove this being a prototype Play Station. I'd like to see it opened and pictures of the underside.

Dust on the case would be hard to reproduce in photoshop. Either it's a faked up model or the real deal.

If someone where to seriously try and make a convincing mockup, than they would know lack of cd drive, 3 av outs, ect. would make the console look fake.

So, if somewone puts enough time into making a case, even if its a hackjob, than why would they include details that scream "fake"? Why wouldn't they take a much more conservative approach, one that wouldn't draw suspicion as readily.

At this point, I think its some internal Sony development unit/pre production model.

Like Sienar says, this is most likely some internal dev/test system.

My guess is that it'd somehow allow for testing of applications on a somewhat similiar specs/hardware as what was to be used for the Snes CD/PlayStation.

Possibly via cartridge, maybe via an internal harddrive?

The huge amount of cables isn't easy to blindly guess/explain, but they might be for output from different hardware inside the system. (or just for output on multiple units at the same time, such as recording hardware, maybe).

    [edit]
Hope they update with more info/pictures soon, would be nice to get some proper light shed on what it is and where it came from
    [/edit]

    As for the odd homemade design of it. I don't know if anyone remember this lovely little baby;

That was shown in an interview with some of the guys behind Mario & Luigi on the DS.
Doesn't exactly strike you as the most professional DS developement/test system in the world, does it?

I agree, I saw this the other day and laughed my ass off. It's one shitty looking "prototype". It's fucking huge and ugly. Someone should break out 3D Studio Max or something and come up with their own SNES CD-ROM prototype. It wouldn't be hard to do a better job.

Plus how is this "real"? No SNES CD games exist. There's no outside knowledge really, so anyone could make anything and claim it's real. This is about as real as Zelda 3 for NES.

I find it a bit odd that the guy from game-rave.com is staking his rep on it? To be honest I don't know the guy nor the site that well although he has some links coming here to assembler...Anything is possible though I remember getting a Atari Jag VR back in 2000 (for free) and got blasted all over the place and as some may know Jaysmith2000 has it now so the impossible is possible sometimes :)

    I found that important.

Not everyone is throwing it out as a fake as of yet...

...not that anyone is wanting to say "hands down real" either...

I think we should keep in mind how ugly the confirmed SNES cd proto is...

All we can really do here is wait.

I do think that this is fake, especially after seeing the back. The fact that puictures of it were posted on Kotaku with the Sony and Super Famicom logos airbrushed out, and now we have the exact same picture only with the logos, also makes me call bogus. (EDIT: my mistake, ignore).

But, to those who've criticised the design - that's actually the one good part of this. The design DOES look like the electronics Sony designed in the early 90s.

Several Super CD games do exist, just not in the public domain.
