We owe the Diebolds our thanks for showing us this wonderful piece of gaming history.

Yes, they've been incredibly gracious taking time out of their schedule to let others see this incredible piece of gaming history. Very generous and kind of them.

I realize that in my previous post, I may have come off as ungrateful for their efforts. On the contrary, I very much appreciate all that they have done and continue to do to make this unit available for public viewing and all they've done to research the workings and origins of the system.

My comments were more in regard to this particular presentation which I feel was hastily put together and did not do just service to the Diebold's otherwise excellent effort to share this find with the public. I hope that future events can be afforded more rehearsal and that more background information will have been discovered that can then be shared with the audience.

All this said, I really did have fun yesterday. :)

I was messing with the ROM that leaked and found this:

Not sure what it is or if you've seen it before.
And the BIOS is working awesomely well in NO$SNS

I already talked about this a while back and it's just a Save manager. And of course the BIOS works in NO$SNS since this emulator supports SuperDisc emulation.

That just says there is no file present. My guess would be that it's development placeholder text as well since the word for file is written in the wrong alphabet.

Not necessarily. Sometimes games will use hiragana for words that should be written in Katakana.

Really? I've never seen that but I'm sure its possible especially if its a game that is meant to be accessible to very young Japanese kids.

Yeah, loads of games do it. I've seen it just today on a PC Engine shooter by Taito. It said Only One in Hiragana like this おんりー わん when it should have been in Katakana as オンリー ワン. Loading is another that appears in Hiragana quite a bit.

Hiragana is often used for aesthetic reasons because it looks "softer". In this case I'd guess there's just no katakana font, though.

I thought about that but the fact that it supports kanji based on the bottom options suggested to me that katakana is probably in there.

To save space, games of that era generally only contain tiles for the specific kanji used. The only kanji it "supports" might literally be those two or three displayed, while the filenames may only support hiragana.

That's what I love about that language... textbook style Japanese works all the time (except when it doesn't :p)

Do you guys know that Ben Heck is doing a tear down on this very unit on his show this week?! His show normally go live on a a Saturday morning for me but since Japan is GMT +8 at the moment the videos probably go up on a Friday for everyone else.

    Wuh?

Did you just mention Ben Heck in the same sentence as an incredibly rare piece of gaming hardware?

How on Earth did he get chance to do a teardown?
I hope he keeps his hot-snot gun away from it, and at least uses an ESD wriststrap this time. lol

Where did you find out about this?

    OzOnE.
